Subject: ADD: Blue Moon (Rodgers & Hart) From: steve (folkie@synapse.net) Date: 23 Nov 97 - 02:18 AM An abridged version is on page 77 of the folksinger's handbook, Rise Up Singing.
(lyrics: Lorenz Hart, Music: Richard Rodgers) Blue moon, you saw me standing alone Without a dream in my heart Without a love of my own Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for You saw me saying a prayer for Someone I really could care for And then there suddenly appeared before me The only one my arms will ever hold I heard somebody whisper please adore me And when I looked the moon had turned to gold! Blue moon, now I'm no longer alone Without a dream in my heart Without a love of my own |
Subject: Blue Moon From: WeRGemini@aol.com Date: 30 Jan 99 - 12:56 AM Hi there - seeing that we'll be having a blue moon on Sunday, I'm desperately searching for the lyrics to "Blue Moon" (you saw me standing alone...). I'd love to sing it at a music gathering here in L.A. Can anybody help? Thanks! Renata, at WeRGemini@aol.com

Blue moon,
And then there suddenly appeared before me,
Blue moon, I'm 99% sure of the words singing from memory, only i can't type as fast as I sing, and my song book is several miles away. Enjoy, Musicman |
Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: alison Date: 30 Jan 99 - 02:47 AM Hi, That's more or less as I remember it. Except the last line (of the first and last verse) should be, "without a love of my own." Slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: Musicman Date: 30 Jan 99 - 04:27 AM I stand corrected.....sheepishly..... |
Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: alison Date: 30 Jan 99 - 08:29 AM Hi, We used to have a regular at our folk club, (are you still out there Mandola man?)... he used to sing this. He claimed it WAS a folk song because everyone knew the words and could join in....... I like that sort of attitude. Slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: katmuse Date: 30 Jan 99 - 09:11 AM Without getting into the perpetual discussion of "what _is_ REALLY a folk song" -- in case anyone is interested, "Blue Moon" is by Richard Rodgers (music) and Lorenz (Larry) Hart (lyrics), from I forget which Broadway musical of ca. the 1930s -- I think maybe "Jumbo," if I remember accurately the drawing on the page of my Rodgers & Hart Songbook. Wonderful song, no matter which category it gets put in. Could use another Hart-felt verse, though, if anyone happens to be as clever with lyrics as Larry was. You have 2 chances to sing it this year (3, if you count Valentine's Day): there's a second blue moon in March (I just found this out from Jack Horkheimer's "Star Gazer" program on my local PBS channel). |
Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: rich r Date: 30 Jan 99 - 10:47 AM If you don't get the song learned right now, there will be another Blue Moon in March of this year a rather unusual calendaric-astronomic conjunction. You might want to dig out Nanci Griffith's "Once In a Very Blue Moon". There won't be any more until after Y2K rich r |
Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: Renata Date: 30 Jan 99 - 12:34 PM Hi all you wonderful people who replied to my request! Thank you so very much for the lyrics to "Blue Moon" - my partner (just about the best guitar player in the world, I'm so lucky!) is practising as we speak. Nice to know the song will come in handy again in March! We belong to a folk music club in the L.A. area called "Songmakers", and we have regular "hoots" most weekends. We even have a home page, if anybody would like to check it out (that's where I got the Mudcat Cafe link) at "apc.net/songmakers" Thanks again. I was overwhelmed by all the responses! This is just great! Love, Renata |

Subject: RE: Blue Moon From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 01 Aug 04 - 06:04 AM Try this: Blue Moon, You saw me standing alone, without a dream in my heart, without a song of my own. At the same time, get someone to sing: Sha-boom-sha-boom (sha nananananananananana (4 times, repeat ad nauseum) At the same time, get someone else to sing this: Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly I gotta love one man till I die Can't help lovin' that man of mine It works! It's cool! It gets an audience warmed up for singing, and possibly eating out of your hand! Allison |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blue Moon From: PoppaGator Date: 07 Jan 05 - 08:08 PM The wonderful "doo-wop" version of Blue Moon, for which JennyO provided camplete lyrics back in August, is properly credited to the Marcells, who recorded it sometime in the late 1950's. (I'd guess '57 or '58, but I can't be sure.) Sha Na Na were revivalists who covered a great many '50s classics a decade or so later, with a slightly condescending but basically good-natured "camp" attitude. Their dancing was probably more important to their act than their singing, and they did everything a little too fast. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blue Moon From: GUEST,Murray MacLeod Date: 07 Jan 05 - 08:36 PM The Marcels (sic) released their version in 1961. Still one of my favourite pop records of all time. Sam Cooke recorded a fine version of the song as well. |
