Subject: Jim Payne's From: Barry Finn Date: 30 Jan 99 - 03:15 AM Jim Payne from Newfoundland wrote a great song called "Empty Nets", can anyone tell me if he also wrote the tune or if it's by someone else or if it's traditional. The reason for asking is that I wrote a song of Old Ironsides & used the tune to Empty Nets for it & if it's by Jim I'd be looking to contact him. Thanks Barry |

KarenK, sorry, I can't do tunes or music. I only recall the chorus to the song:
Empty nets, that's what you get I think that's pretty close. Barry |

Subject: RE: Jim Payne's From: Bill Cameron Date: 31 Jan 99 - 01:00 PM It's one of the ironies of life that out of the great ecological and human tragedy, the collapse of the Newfoundland cod fishery (among others), so many great songs, as well as a lot of not-so-great ones, have been created. "Empty Nets" is one, Stan Rogers' "Make and Break Harbour" was an earlier one. My personal favourite is "Peter's Dream" by Lennie Gallant. It's about a young fisherman who after a night of drinking and bitter conversation with his buddies in the shut-down fishery, (the inshore cod fishery was closed for an indefinite period about 1994, and stocks don't seem to be recovering) facing the loss of his livelihood and the need to leave his hometown for economic survival, goes out and takes the drastic action of sinking his own boat at dockside with a shotgun.
