Subject: Official Mudcat ICQ Chat Room
From: Max
Date: 02 Feb 99 - 03:01 PM

Hi all, I was thinking about the usefulness and whatnot of an official Mudcat ICQ Channel. Anyhow, ignorance prevented me from coming to a conclusion so the only option left is to just try it. Our ICQ# is 30225098. I also registered for a chat room called &mudcat, but I am not sure how that works. Let me know if you think its worth doing.

I'm really not sure what ICQ is. Is it that chat thing that tells registered people that other registered pals are on-line? If so, it sounds like a good idea to me. And Max, if you don't mind me hitchin' a ride on your thread, I was mulling over another idea... We refer frequently to children and folksong, how about coming up with a childrens zone in the old cafe? Something with graphics (Hey Alice, wanna volunteer a few pics?), and stories for the younger set.

This came to mind because I was thinking about the person who was displeased with the condom thread, it occured to me that young children are likely to find our discussion forum a rather dry atmosphere, and therefore we needn't worry too much about the impressionable. But hey, we all know Max has lots of free time to work his miracles. So how do we make an internet playground that gets kids into folksong/folklore?

Frank i.t.s.

Max,

I think it's a nice idea to have the ICQ option, but I think I am more comfortable w/ the bulletin board format. Shy, I guess. I appreciate all the work you do!

ok, I have added Mudcat(30225098) to my list of users, and it shows that '&mudcat' is online...but I am not sure how it should work...how is a chat there different than the ones I have had with other Mudcatters?..

ok...it seems to be automatic...you open ICQ..click on the ICQ letters in the loewr left corner, and then on 'search/add users' in the drop-down menu...you get a screen with 3 sets of blanks...move the dot from the top one to the bottom 'search by ICQ#' and enter the #...30225098...then click 'next' it searches and shows you the info...with a blank already checked to allow you to add it to your list..(it says you can 'send message, too, but I doubt that that is relevant here)...then click 'next' again, and &mudcat is added to your online list..if you want to read about all this go here to the chatroom explanation page, but there is a LOT of reading.... the easy thing to do is, once you have &mudcat in your list, just click on it, then click 'chat' in the drop-down menu...and you are automatically in! (at least I was...(though I am/was alone, since I seem to be the first one to try it!) I am there now --8:02 pm EST...

it also may be a good idea, when you get in, to go to the 'layout' menu at the top and choose IRC mode...unless you can follow live typing in several windows at once..

(by the way...while I was typing this, Dale came in ...I think we are the first ones to use it!!)

Bill D and I just tested the chat room. Works FINE. We both recommend that you set it to IRC mode, unless the group is very small. It gets rather hectic trying to follow what is going on, otherwise.

I ALMOST ruined a cake while gabbing to Bill. Only over by 7 minutes, but it looks OK!

Thanks, Max~~for the chat room, but not for letting me overbake the cake!

Hi,

I have just tried sending an ICQ message to anyone out there who happens to be online.

This should flash a yellow envelope on your screen and say 'Uh -oh". then you should be able to know if someone else is online and request a chat.

I have found ICQ to work very well.... the record number I've managed to get into a chat room so far is five....

Looks like no one is actually there at the moment although it says it is online.

Max,

Is it set up to be online permanently or only when someone is there? Is that anti social bar man who never gave us any drinks before on duty?

Can you get ICQ? Are you already a registered user of ICQ.

Just type in 30225098 where it asks for an ICQ#. It should work.

If that doesn't work try sending me a message (16719177)

There is no one there at the moment.

I reckon it won't work unless you are registered so follow this link and good luck.....

ICQ registration

Failing that send one of us your email address and we'll contact you by adding you to our contact lists..... Probably better if we use the personal messages pages for email addresses.

ICQ is a 'live' chat program...you have to download it and install it, and then you can do all this..(ps...works better with PC than MAC...but it will work.)..go to http://www.mirabilis.com/

I haven't tried it, but the time-zone differences make chats a nuisance. I prefer the forum format.

I haven't found the time zones a problem....... there is usually a bit of an overlap...... and some of those American fellas are awake at some weird hours......

It's still playing up.... have just sent a message to ICQ tech support to see what is going on.

ICQ is the only thing I have found to be unfriendly to my Mac. I am avoiding downloading anything until I can afford a system upgrade, so it will be I NO C Q for me.

I think the idea of a kid's forum for folk music is a good idea, if someday, Max, you could target the page to school aged kids who are looking for words to songs... you, know, we have had teachers looking for particular topics, we have discussed camping songs, etc.

It is working now~~though no one was there except &mudcat. As to being permanent, it should be that alright, as long as the Mudcat machine that has &mudcat on it is operating and ICQ is up and running. That is not quite so likely, as things go wrong with ICQ every now and then, so just try again later if you can't get in.

So, for those who do not have ICQ yet, just use the link supplied by Alison earlier to download it. As far as getting into the chat room is concerned, you will first need to add the &mudcat number (30225098) to your contact list. Once you have done that, click on &mudcat, which will give you a small pop up screen of options. On my version of ICQ, ICQ chat is the sixth option down~~first in the second section. That should take you directly to the chat room. You do not even need to supply your own ICQ number. Some one else does need to be there in order to chat, unless you like chatting to yourself. I would suggest just waiting around a while.

News bulletin: In the time it has taken me to write this, it is not working again. Oh, well.

One of the fellas with weird hours.

I have downloaded ICQ,am able to bring up a small window with &mudcat as the title bar,I click &mudcat, then ICQ Chat, then I get a box that prompts me to enter chat subject. I ignore this and click chat in bottom right. Then i get a box saying "initiating chat. waiting for reply." Then nothing happens. What should I do?

Can't explain it~~that happens for me, too. I have been there a couple of times, once when Bill D was there and once by myself. The rest of the time it has been the way you say, EJ. As Alison notes above, she sent a message to ICQ tech support. I guess we stop holding our breath, and wait and see. Eventually someone will come along and figure it out, I am sure.

Just a note of encouragement for ICQ for the Mudcat. I think it's a great idea. I won't be participating until after I get a new system (as stated in previous message) but I think it is a great additional tool for communicating. alice

Please follow this link: http://www.icq.com/icqchat

Join one of ICQ's Chat Rooms by clicking on the Join button next to the desired room.

Once joined, the chat room will be added to your contact list.

Alison,
I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out whether &mudcat is a chatroom or a way of signing into a chatroom...it seems like i use the mducat icq number to join a chatroom....I'v just spent too much time in the woods lately I guess...oh and how is Saturday shaping up?..harpgirl

Subject: RE: Official Mudcat ICQ Channel

Saturday is sunny so far (I'm about to go for a swim)....... is that what you wanted to know/????

&mudcat is the name of the chatroom........ if there is no one there, (&mudcat and the bartender are unlikely to talk to you... unless Max is about)... it's a good idea to loiter around and see if anyone else turns up.

Bill d showed me how to do this......... at the top left of the screen there is a think bubble with zzzz's in it. If you click on it..... it minimises your screen so you can carry on with whatever you were doing.. but if someone comes to the chat room and starts to type... the screen will maximise again. (therefore letting you know someone is there)

So, for anyone who goes in.... and the others seems to be ignoring you... type something..... and you might wake them up..
