Subject: Folk Fests 06-Where're you going?
From: Mr Happy
Date: 28 Mar 06 - 10:29 AM

During past few weeks, I've been scrutinising froots, & other folk links for festivals, gatherings etc to visit this season.

The main criteria in my quest is to find inexpensive do's + camping.

Here's my preliminary plan:

Apr 14-17 [Easter]
Easter w/end: 3 Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires, Derbyshire
Camping: £1.50/night

April 28th to May 1st Upton on Severn,
Campsite – £10 per head all weekend

MAY 5th - 7th
HOLMFIRTH FESTIVAL OF FOLK
Camping £5.50 p/person p/night

May 12-14
Wheaton Aston Festival
Staffs.

19th- 21st May
Yorkshire gathering

26-29 May
Chester Folk Festival

Bishops Castle

Middlewich

Dent

Cleckheaton

Saddleworth

Hardraw

Bradfield

Shrewsbury

Fylde

Otley

Ingleton

Where are you going this season?

I think most people will go to there nearest festivals to where they live, not because they are cheap.

Old Songs, Mystic Sea Music Festival, Philadelphia Folk Fest, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and perhaps Falcon Ridge.

I'd love to go to New Bedford SummerFest, but it won't fit into my schedule this year. Highly recommended!

I may sneak in a few other festivals that are within a 100 mile radius or so.

We're doing Chester, Warwick, Saddleworth, Burntwood and Shrewsbury. I've got kids so school holidays and Professor Panic are always factors to take into consideration. Burntwood is weekend before Shrewsbury so take off camping in Wales for few days inbetween the two.

Priddy seems the nearest to us..

but as me & mrs never learnt to drive, so depend on public transport..

it may just as well be as far away as all the other festivals we never go to ?

.. is Priddy a good little festival ?

The Alaska Folk Festival (April 3-April 9), which I always enjoy
The Getaway (November)

We've talked about going to Fiddle Tunes in Washington state (July) but I doubt I'll make it. Some year I do want to go, though; I've never been.

Well, if you pick out the ones that Moor & Coast cater for chances are I'll be there!
I'm also booked at Alcester & Arden, Warwick & Bromyard.

I clocked up 15 festivals last year and that was BEFORE I passed my driving test, so we'll see how many my little car can take me to!

Since my wife and I make our livings selling pottery at art festivals almost every weekend, we seldom get a chance to attend music festivals. We're able to do the Florida Folk Festival because it has an arts & crafts market and we sell as much there as at most art festivals. We've applied for a couple of higher volume art shows for this Fall season and if we're accepted into them we may drop a few smaller shows and actually take some weekends off to do some music festivals. May even try to get to the Getaway if things go right.

In answer to your question, Punkfolkrocker, I went to Priddy festival in the late nineties and I thought it was an exceptionally good festival: great atmosphere, a beautiful setting and very well chosen performers. I've heard that it's moved site and got a bit bigger since then. Perhaps someone with more recent knowledge can help you.

I've just been looking through my diary to make sure I'm not hoping to be in 2 places at once! Now I'm a lady of leisure it's down to the type of festival I enjoy, how far away it is 'cos he doesn't like towing for hundred of miles and what it costs. so so far the list is

Barnsley Easter
Bollington
Holmfirth - first time there!
Yorkshire Mudcat 6 miles up the road from home!!
Norwell if it's on this year
Black Bull Bender
Beverley Fringe
4 Fools - havn't been since it moved from Reditch
Durham Folk Party - went last year and want to go again!
Bradfield
2nd Bender
OLD DENABY SING weekend of 8 - 10th September
Banbury
Should keep me happy and he can fish the rest of the time!!!

Has anyone been to the festival in Fochabers, Scotland in August. Is it worth the drive up from Edinburgh? We're going to be visiting Scotland the first 2 weeks of August.   Or, do you have better suggestions?
