Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 14 Apr 06 - 09:26 PM I'm still beat from all that travel, but I want to say what a pleasure it was to see Mudcatters at the performance. Amos, Barky and her friend, and of course our Chief Mudcatter, Joe and Christina. Joanna made a delicious dinner, and I insisted on getting the formula for the peas. I gotta get some sleep......... |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: open mike Date: 14 Apr 06 - 09:20 PM you may have good luck with that redwood seedling..or burl.. i have seen them growing on a swedish island in the Baltic! |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 14 Apr 06 - 09:08 PM Joe did a great job of showing us around some very beautiful country, and we thank him very much for that. Joe, your mountains may be higher, but our lobsters are more tasty! |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 14 Apr 06 - 09:04 PM It was one hell of a good trip. Being asked to take the stage with one of my few heros, and getting to spend 4 days with him and his lovely wife, Joanna, was certainly a high spot for me this year. Neither Utah nor I was up for an encore, because we both pushed ourselves to the limit. It's always a good idea to leave them wanting more any way. Jacqui calls the Rockies "Those pointy bits". She and Joe enjoyed standing on the very edge of a sheer drop, and I must confess, I was as nervous as a Christain Scientist with a severed artery. The bottom was a long way off! Hell, if one fell off that cliff he would starve to death before he hit the bottom. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: jacqui.c Date: 14 Apr 06 - 08:49 PM I've put some phots of the event on flickr, and if the clicky works you can see them here |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: jacqui.c Date: 14 Apr 06 - 08:46 PM Utah is always worth seeing, Homeless. If you go try and get a copy of his four CD set, Starlight on the Rails. It's a little more expensive than the others but well worth it for the commentary he gives on each track. He's a great performer. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Homeless Date: 14 Apr 06 - 08:31 PM I missed this thread the first time around, but I see from the itinerary linked to earlier that there is gonna be a show about five blocks from me in a couple weeks. Is this Utah fella worth seeing if the other chap won't be there? |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Dan Schatz Date: 14 Apr 06 - 05:43 PM DVDs, huh? I imagine any number of folks would order one in advance. I tried to convince Geeta, who was in San Francisco for a conference, to take a bus up there, but I guess it was a little out of the way. Nice to hear we may be able to watch the show after all, though it sure isn't the same. Glad to hear you drove through two trees - next time, though, you might want to pick the ones with holes cut in them.... Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: jacqui.c Date: 14 Apr 06 - 10:38 AM We got back just about midnight last night, weary and travel worn but with so many good memories. Our lovely Mary picked us up from the jetport and delivered us home. She had made sure that there were alcoholic beverages in the fridge - a most welcome sight! I'm still laughing from reading the thread - Mick, we will turn our attention to you soon dear! As has been stated, Kendall doesn't shop so I didn't have an opportunity to really find tacky gifts, altough I did get a little something for Mary.... We put about 1100 miles on the rental car, stayed at a variety of motels, some wonderful, one rather toward the tacky end. It feels like we drove up and down every mountain in Northern California and yes, we drove through TWO redwoods. Driving through the Valley of the Giants was awe inspiring. I am so glad we got to see those trees - they are something special. We even brought back a seedling, purchased from a visitor centre in the area. I'm not sure that it would ever be suitable for growing outdoors in Maine but it will be a reminder of a wonderful journey. The main reason for the trip - the gig. Both if us were nervous about the performance and it turns out that Utah was as well. He hadn't been on stage for a couple of months as a result of his illness so Saturday night was a watershed for both of them. After the soundcheck about eighteen people involved in the show sat down to a meal provided by Joanna, Utah's wife, in the 'green room'. Kendall sat in the auditorium for the first half of the performance, which was all Utah, and then took the stage for the second half. I was sitting on the edge of my seat hoping that his voice would hold out - and it did, although I think that toward the end of his set he was feeling the effects. However, he got a great reception from the audience and looked very relaxed on stage. Both Kendall and Utah made the show something special and I felt priviledged to have been there. I really enjoyed the time we spent with Utah and Joanna as well as meeting Mudcat friends old and new. It was a pleasure to meet Open Mike who lives in the most idyllic spot miles from anywhere and to spend a day exploring the local area with Joe, although I'm not so sure that Kendall was totally happy with being in the passenger seat close to the sheer drops on some of the mountain roads. We managed to purloin the poster from the Centre for the Arts - it's about 4' x 6' and I have had it signed by both Utah and Kendall. This is going into the Mudcat auction, 100% of the proceeds to Mudcat funds. I'll be downloading photos later today or tomorrow and will then set up the auction item with a link to the flickr site (if I can get the blue clicky right!). There was a recording made of the show and there may be another auction for a copy of that. Utah says that we can do what we want with the recording so we may look at the cost of production of DVDs, but that will have to be researched for economics before making any commitment. Thank you all for the good wishes which we have only now received - we had no interent access for the duration of the trip. I think that most of today will be spent catching up with what is going on..... |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Apr 06 - 03:26 AM Now, there's an idea, Art. I think you would have loved the audience Kendall and Utah had Saturday. The three of you would have had a great time together on stage. You would have liked the tour I gave Kendall and Jacqui yesterday - waterfalls and steep canyons and all the beauties of the wilderness, seated on comfortable leather seats. My wife let me use her car for the tour... -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Apr 06 - 12:59 AM Darn. I forgot to ask them is they found a tree to drive through. the found lots of redwoods, though - they got as far as Orick in Redwoods National Park, way up the coast of Northern California. Here (click) is where I took them today, across the canyon of the North Fork of the American River, and then home along the ridge between the North and Middle Forks. There were more waterfalls in the canyon then I have ever seen before, and we had a wonderful time. Quite a bit of snow, too. Thanks for coming, Kendall and Jacqui! -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Apr 06 - 09:54 PM Just where are the dynamic duo headed? Not just looking for trees to scratch the rental car on, right? Are they headed to any interesting western water features? Volcanoes? Wildlife areas? Hoots? SRS |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Apr 06 - 09:55 PM My great uncle Olaf Husby was one who participated in the cutting then helped hollow out a western red cedar in Washington State, that was used for driving through when people drove Model-Ts. Now they have relocated it (again) and it is in a I-5 rest area near Arlington, Washington. Somewhere I have a family photo of Olaf at the stump in it's original location. This is about it and most of those Seattle Mudcatters will know the stump I'm talking about. Back to the Kendall and Utah show. . . SRS |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Tinker Date: 11 Apr 06 - 03:03 PM So sorry I gcouldn't make the show, but spent the weekend doing the college courtship rounds with Julienne. Oh Mick me boy, I have to agree with Mary that you seem to be feeling a tad neglected. NOw when Aunt Mary and Jacqui decide you need something -- well remember it's for your own good. Kendall does have a limited attention span for shopping, but you know Mary, now that Mick has publically called attention to the fact he likes to observe Kendall's arse --- well that usually does keep Kendall's attention focused for a while --- and remember how much tack there may be to choose from. Have a great time all |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 11 Apr 06 - 02:20 PM Mick, You are just begging for attention! It is sad that Jacqui is out there surrounded by all that crap and I am not there to help her choose. Kendall has the attention span of a hyperactive gnat when it comes to shopping. I did stop by the Christmas Tree shop and pick up a little "Welcome Home" gift for the pair. I also found a lovely anniversary gift for Micca and Catsphiddle. But even I have to admit, I have outdone myself with the latest acquisition for Linn. If Jacqui accompanies me the the Press Room on Saturday, we will deliver IT/THEM as well as Barry Finn's belated birthday gift and possibly a wayward green violinist. Come to think of it, if you will sing a cowboy song at the Getaway, I have the perfect gift for you too, Micheline. SINS |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Big Mick Date: 11 Apr 06 - 09:46 AM MEMO DATE: April 11, 2006 TO: California Division of Border Security FROM: Department of Homeland Security from Tacky Gifts SUBJECT: Border alert -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please be advised that, due to the link from the above mentioned "Link Fairy" there now exists the potential for the unwanted exportation of the virus known as "Tacky Gift Giving". As you know, you have an infestation in and around the Redwood Highway area mentioned in the above post. It has come to our attention that a potential carrier is in your area, and may attempt to breach the quarantine zone. This carrier is a known associate of The Queen of Kitsch, AKA Tacky Gift Mary AKA Sinsull AKA Mary "the Bomb" Sullivan. It is very likely that this duo is planning to smuggle quantities of this virus out of the quarantine zone, for purposes of driving parents in Ohio mad, or as playthings for a group of Gorilla's which they ferretted into South Jersey. Please be on the lookout for this nefarious character. The utmost vigilance will be necessary on your part. She will be masquerading herself as this adorable little British woman travelling with a nice fella that talks funny. Please exercise extreme caution with the little woman. While she is an adorable looking person, the facade hides the heart of an axe murderer. She has been known to torment Irish American Labor Organizers for months on end, and confine men and Labradors to the basement for months on end. One of the giveaways will come when these two talk to each other. He speaks to her in Mainese, and she responds in the Queen's English. The giveaway is that no one will understand anything they say. The Navaho Codetalkers had nothing on these two. Should you apprehend them, please conduct a full body exam on the gentleman. You will know you have the right person if he has a wrinkled old arse. Your help in the area of containing this kitsch virus in the area has been noted in the past, and appreciated. We look forward to a successful operation in containing this threat. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Jeri Date: 11 Apr 06 - 09:17 AM SINSULL, aHEM!... you're gonna want to go to that second link of Joe's that the 'Link Fairy', whoever that is, has now repaired. There's a 'Chandelier Tree' there. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 11 Apr 06 - 09:05 AM They were looking for the Chandelier Tree. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: GUEST,KT Date: 11 Apr 06 - 07:21 AM Hey there,Joe! Give those two a hug for me! I'd do it myself if I could, but I'm a little too far away....LONDON! We drove through one of those REDWOODS about 6 years ago......Pretty cool! |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Apr 06 - 02:18 AM Hi, Mark - I wondered if you were the Mark Ross Utah Phillips mentioned from the stage. I can't quite remember what he said - I think he told a joke you told him on the phone. Redwood National Park (click) lists three drive-through redwoods, all of which are quite a bit south of the park. This link (click) will give you more information about tacky things in the areaa. [It will now that I fixed it. ♥Link Fairy♥] I'm hoping to take Kendall and Jacqui on a hike to our favorite waterfall in Wednesday - but the weather forecast doesn't look good. We'll find entertainment somehow, despite the weather. -Joe-

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Franz S. Date: 10 Apr 06 - 10:12 PM I think the drive-thru redwood tree option has been discontinued. Hard on both the tree and the car, since they're making them wider now. The cars, that is. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: GUEST,MAG Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:40 PM OK, if there is a video or DVD release, surely it will be a commercial production. Just make sure the announcement makes a thread here. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:27 PM Another phone call. They are looking for a redwood to drive through -scary. Reminds me of that old joke - "Well where would you like the back door?" Kendall has a treasure or two to put into the Mudcat auction. He sounds tired but very happy. Nice to know that fame and celebrity haven't gone to hos head. He still calls an old friend to check up on his dog, who has taken over the couch and once again disgraced himself at the dog park. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Amos Date: 10 Apr 06 - 12:54 PM Utah's been through pneumonia of late--he mentioned this was his first public gig in a couple of months. That always takes it out of you and it can take long months to recover your energy level. But he was a trouper and didn't flag during the show. A |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: open mike Date: 10 Apr 06 - 12:17 PM i ws fortunate to meet the Cap'n and Jacqui they stopped by yesterday on the way to the redwoods. kendall took his coffee cup to the stream to pan for gold,,,and got a few nuggets...of pyrite. i showed them some of the video we took the night before at the Garnet Rogers concert. The word is that the Utah/Kendall show was filmed, as well. News at 11. AS they were leaving, I sang them a late wedding present... Kate Wolf, Give Yourself to Love. Sorry I could not make it to the concert--I would have loved to get a chance to participate in the mud reunion.. I have fond memories of singing around the campfire with Amos, and singing sea chanties with Joe and a boat load of others. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Bill D Date: 10 Apr 06 - 12:08 PM Utah has always had a little tin box of "important stuff" with him...I remember him showing some it here in the Wash DC area a few years ago....the box itself..(old tobacco box?) had some sort of story. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Mark Ross Date: 10 Apr 06 - 10:13 AM The pictures are those of his children. I am not sure what figure you mention, though he has been known to keep a rubber chicken handy to throw at unruly audiences. And, Oh, yes, watch out for the electronic whooppee cushion(w/remote. I was victimized by that a couple of years ago). Sorry I couldn't be there for the show, it sounds like it was a corker. Utah sounde tired when I talked to him yesterday(Bushed? No he was beyond that, he was shrubbed!), but he was very pleased that he got a chance to present Kendall to that audience. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 10 Apr 06 - 09:46 AM Mick - it's a done deal but you are opening with me harmonizing to "Bird In A Guided Cage". You're singing soprano. Tighten your thong. I can't wait to hear Jacqui's telling of the tale. Utah Phillips had a few items on a table when he performed in Maine. Pictures of some children and a small figure of a hobo along with some other things. Anyone know the story behind these? |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Big Mick Date: 09 Apr 06 - 10:34 PM Yes, West Chester would be wonderful ....... with an Irish Catholic Labor Organizer Folk singer opening for them. Mick, who is starting to grovel. |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Dan Schatz Date: 09 Apr 06 - 09:33 PM Yes, that Uriah Boardman story is moving - although I must admit that's not the word that first comes to mind. (Downright hilarious; I was on the floor laughing, etc. is more the mark.) *SIGH*, I wish I could have been there. Still, let's hope this means an East Coast reunion. You did say West Chester, PA, right? Right?? Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Amos Date: 09 Apr 06 - 08:34 PM I am back home after driving 1200 miles there and back, and all I can say is would have been worth twice the drive. Hurtling through the I-5 corridor down the San Jouquin at 90 between the hours of 3 and 5 in the morning is something no-one should miss, unless they can! LOL Utah and Kendall are like two hurricanes doing the foxtrot -- a true perfect storm of good humor and grace and deep humanity and wide and wonderful tales from all over time. The crowd loved'em both completely. Absolutely had 'em eating out of their hands. Joe is thinner and better looking than I would have guess from his pictures. Franz, I am sorry to have missed you. I couldn't stay very later because I already had, and still had to run down to San Jose and San Diego. I am very, very happy that Barky got to see this evening's show -- she and Nicole were just jaw-dropped and delighted, but they learned some deep and important stuff, too. A |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 09 Apr 06 - 08:02 PM Uriah? Did he tell the story of Uriah on the train with the lady of loose morals? Or when Dad fell down the well? Or if there was frost on the ground this AM? Damn! I am sorry I missed it. |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Apr 06 - 07:58 PM Franz- Glad you and your honored father had a chance to take this special event in. The Donner Diner? Good lord...That's a move up from the Roadkill Diner. Maybe they'll generate a video. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Franz S. Date: 09 Apr 06 - 06:21 PM I don't even know how I recognized Joe. I was happy to meet him and Kuddie, and I'm sorry I missed Amos. And Charley, the Nevada City-Grass Valley area is much too upscale to have a No-Tell-Motel 6. Ir would more likely be a Highly-Discreet-Bed-and-Breakfast. The concert appeared to be a great success. Phillips is locally well-beloved deservedly so) and Kendall was well received. My father was so moved by the story about Uriah Boardman and the seagull that he immediately started taking notes. I particularly enjoyed the menu description of the Donner Diner (though I'm afraid some of my neighbors would not; that whole story is still a touchy subject in my town). The wordplay could only be likened to Errol Flynn in "Captain Blood" with words in place of rapiers ( a much better choice IMHO). Both gentlemen know how to command a stage with nothing more than their voices. Hell of a good time. |

Subject: RE: Kendall and Utah Phillips From: Jeri Date: 09 Apr 06 - 08:54 AM Joe, were you wearing a plaid shirt? That might account for the recognizability. Heaven knows, it probably wasn't the photos on Mudcat. It sounds like y'all had a good time. I hope they're taking pictures, and we get a full report at some point from the Morses. |
