Subject: Need Egyptian folksongs From: katlaughing Date: 05 Feb 99 - 11:26 AM Hi, there. My sister is an elementary music teacher and folkmusic lover, like all of us! Anyway, this year, her school's international day is about Egypt. As the music teacher, she creates most of the presentations, with songs and dance. I have some popular vocal and instrumental Egyptian music on tape for her to use, but she really needs a couple or so songs that she can teach to the kids. Are there any Mudcatters in Egypt? Does anyone know of any folksongs from Egypt which can be accessed and copied? The websites I found were somewhat helpful, but just had everything on cd or tape, nothing printed with translations. Thank you very much, katlaughing |

Subject: RE: Need Egyptian folksongs From: Animaterra Date: 05 Feb 99 - 03:31 PM How's your sister's school music budget, kat? "Multicultural" is so in these days at schools that there are many music books available with at least a few songs from Egypt. I have 2, neither of which were too expensive. Does your sis have email? I'd be glad to share info and sources! Allison (aac@monad.net) |
Subject: RE: Need Egyptian folksongs From: katlaughing Date: 05 Feb 99 - 08:05 PM Cute, Joe, too cute! I've sent the lyrics on to my sister. she'll will get a kick out of them! Also, I'd suggested she use the old Prohibition song, "Sahara: now we're dry like you". We decided it might not be the thing for kids that young! Animaterra: thank you. I've let her know of your offer and assistance. I will let you know her email address as soon as I hear back from her. THANKS very much, Both of you. I knew somebody on the 'Cat would have some answers! You guys are great! Katlaughing |

World Music Press, PO Box 2565, Danbury CT 06813 has music from all over. All of the above is available at the music teacher's best friend: West Music, www.westmusic.com That's all I have at home; I'll see if I can come up with any more at school. Good luck! Allison |
Subject: RE: Need Egyptian folksongs From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 07 Feb 99 - 07:55 PM Try Simon Shaheen, a Palestinian musician who now lives in the United States. He plays music from all over the Middle East, including Egypt. He has several CD's out. His speciality is the oud. He himself does not sing but when I saw him in concert he had a young lady singing with his band, so there might be singing on some of his CD's. Certainly he plays Egyptian tunes on his oud.
Or you can try this:
She sailed away on a sunny summer day Well, OK, maybe it isn't authentically Egyptian, but I like it anyway.

Subject: RE: Need Egyptian folksongs From: rich r Date: 07 Feb 99 - 10:01 PM So why are we forgetting the classic "King Tut" by Steve Martin and the rollicking "Walk Like An Egyptian" by the Bangles? I guess I'm no help either. rich r |
Subject: RE: Need Egyptian folksongs From: Martin _Ryan Date: 08 Feb 99 - 04:43 AM And then there's "The Finding of Moses" a la Frank Harte? Regards |
Subject: RE: Need Egyptian folksongs From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 13 Feb 99 - 04:37 PM I never could figure out how King Tut ended up moving to "Babylonia". Different empire entirely. Then there is that song "See the pyramids along the Nile . . ." |
