This coming Saturday, April 15 (tax day) is the date for the monthly shanty / forebitter session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH, starting at 3:30.

We expect a larger than usual number of our locals as we will be holding a rehearsal for our segment of the    New Hampshire Folk Festival
prior to the session.

Looking forward to seeing all our friends from Maine and Gloucester as well -- Tom

We should have a crowd from Maine in the van heading your way.

Is the Memorial Bridge still operational? There was a report that it was going to be taken apart and re-assembled with a gleaming new center span.

We should have advance copies of Roll & Go's new CD available for sale, ROLLING DOWN TO SAILORTOWN, if anyone is interested.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley, New Hampshire is still waiting for Maine's share of the money to refurbish the bridge. The governor has mentioned that if the bridge reaches the point where it is unsafe, it will be locked in the "Up" position so as not to hinder river traffic.

Uh oh, Sinsull bearing gifts.

I think I have to go to the yardsale up the road -- just in case . . .

But will the posted speed limit change?

Maybe we'll just gather on the Kittery shore and harmonize from there. It may be safer.

Never burn your bridges till you cross over!

Sinsull-

Would you please remember to bring the lovely New Year's present that I foolishly left at your house?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I was just wondering if there would be a vertical speed limit as well as a horizontal one. You know-- for the traffic the bridge in the 'up' position wouldn't interfere with.

Never mind...

And, Mary, would you please also bring Charley's sweater? And how much are tickets for Ed Trickett? Maybe we can take care of that bit of business on Saturday as well.

See you then!

Anyone else need something?

Evening everyone....
Yes, we're still among the living. Very busy though. Spent weekend in Amherst and at the Button Box. My dorymate took three workshop classes on Saturday, we went to the concertina concert on Saturday evening and then hit the Amherst brewery until closing to have some fun, song, music, food and drink. This was a really good time. No screech though. Many great instructors during the day from all over the country and Canada. I almost behaved myself this time....must be the water or the company I keep. Another Portland house guest also was in attendance complaining all night long about the poor abused lobster that he left behind in Maine. The whole two days was a real treat.
Yes, we will be hitting the Press Room if all goes well at about 3:30 pm. Tom and Linn.....thanks. Youngest now has a car and is mobile to go about as needed. Frees us up a bit. My Newfie cousin just called me to do another family reunion this year. Took two years to get over the last one...some even expired along the way. More screech please.
We're heading out to Schooner's Pub in Gloucester for our Wednesday night sing in a few hours. Barry or Charley....contact us for the end of April visit. I need a day off...
Peace and clear sailing.
The doryman and his mate.

Barry-

How about that feller singer who brought you a couple of months ago, old what's his name?

Looks like Nor, Eli and JudyB are coming with me.

Are we gonna sing any Easter shanties?

Isn't there one about the perils of sailing through Eggemoggin reach? That's located in Eastern Penobscot Bay for you folks from away.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I can't come up to sing any of the old Easter Shanties like "We'll talk of those boiled Nor'Easter Eggs we had at Paddy West's" or the like, but I'll send you guys up one of mine from here in Maryland. Do with it what you will....

ROLL THE OLD ISCARIOT ALONG

Well, a drop of Christ's Blood wouldn't do us any harm (x3)
And we'll all hang on behind

(Chorus)

And we'll roll the old Iscariot along (x3)
And we'll all hang on behind

And some Welch's for the kiddies wouldn't do them any harm...

And a styrofoam wafer wouldn't do us any harm...
(maybe insert a chorus of "I Am A Poor Wafering Stranger" here...)

And another night with Magdeline won't do us any harm....
(maybe insert "I spent the night with Magdeline, too drunk to roll in bed....")

And a basket full of grass wouldn't do us any harm...

And to Pilate on thick wouldn't do us any harm...

And an extra crossing guard wouldn't do us any harm...

And a spare nail file wouldn't do us any harm....

And to egg each other on wouldn't do us any harm....

And to rise to "The Occaision" wouldn't do us any harm...

And if someone finds the body, won't you send out an alarm...

...Anyway, see if this can get you folks thrown out or excommunicated or something. SINSULL, are you game (and in season)?
If not, pass over the whole thing and wash your hands of it!

Nothing Ventured...

Severn -- Dead brill!!!

A former classmate of mine at Milwaukee Lutheran High School sang, "We want Barabas / But he won't have us / We want Barabas, Barabas be free / We want Barabas / And you can crucify the other guy . . ." at a bus stop in the rain one day -- just before a flash of extremely close lightning and crash of thunder.

Uh huh.

Bat Goddess--When it happened, did your classmate run off like Lou Costello, screaming "Barab a-a-a-a-assss! Help me Barab-a-a-a-ass!"?

Actually, I always liked the old story about Barabas and the Tar Baby, myself....

Now, I've been advised about singing that song anywhere other than informal late night sessions, which is probably why I'm still welcome in the Wharf Rat, the Royal Mile and the Drummer's Lot. Though a few years old, it's never had a formal pub outing.

Actually, I did forget to post the verse about:

And a hand full of silver wouldn't do us any harm....

...but I probably shouldn't have to, as they most likely have to count the silver before you guys leave the pub anyhow....

Have a good time, a good holiday and a Good Saturday, and I'll try to make a detour on one of my Vermont trips to catch one of these things in action.

You bums.
We were worried sick about you. Called the cops and every hospital in SPortland, sent out a pack of bloodhounds, hired a psychic, and... aw crap. It was a truly great session, which I left early because my sinuses and voice were going south, owing in some part to the cloud of freakin' smoke continuously floating past us. Good music, with the usual suspects, plus Fred & Julia.

Isn't there some sort of 12 step program for shop-for-crap-aholics? 'Shopping' is actually a new one for lame excuses for not showing up someplace. Bums.

Sounds like a reprieve for me! (See "be very afraid" quote above.)

I'm hoping to find some time after shoveling out the house to paint the flamingo flats bright colors -- yellow, magenta, lime green, turquoise -- maybe a few drippy multi mixes.

Linn and Gardi-

Four rounds, once an hour, was my count, washed down with a glass of Smuttynose porter.

My complaint: we didn't get to hear Jeri's new parody.

And it was a shame that Alan had to leave after only one round.

It was nice to hear Tom play guitar. He generally doesn't bring it.

Barry Finn was certainly in fine voice which is great because next Friday we're both on our way down to NYC to join the Saturday evening Chantey Sing at the Seamen's Chapel (South Street area). Be nice if everyone else came down too! On the way back up north we plan to join the Gloucester gang at their Wednesday evening get together April 26th.

And it was lovely to hear Jeff Warner lead "Road to Mandalay."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Let's see-- what did I sing?

"Home, Dearie, Home" -- "Sloop John A" (with apologies to Jeff who hates parodies) - "nine Times a Night" -- Tom was the beginning of the circle and I was the end. So some of you got 4 -- three and a half times 'round.

Also great to have David Behm there -- first time in a looooong time, even if he couldn't stay long.

Tom got a lighter weight guitar case so now has been bringing it along more often. That means he can start (he actually has) doing a bunch of songs he hasn't done for awhile because he hadn't worked them out on concertina. (And I can start singing a couple other songs again, too! -- Like "Maid Gae to the Mill")
