Subject: Lil Judique -- origins? From: GUEST,MAG Date: 11 Apr 06 - 10:52 AM The fiddle player showed uip at (contra) band practice with copies of this tune on Sunday. The tune is OK, but she knows nothing about it, where it came from, how it got its name, so I'm coming back to the well. I'm just a tad nervious playing this without context. Any help appreciated. Subject: Tune Add: JUDIQUE JIG / JUDIQUE FLYER From: Peace Date: 11 Apr 06 - 11:23 AM If indeed that is the tune you are seeking info about, the title is "The Judique Jig". ' JUDIQUE JIG [1], THE. Subject: RE: Lil Judique -- origins? From: mooman Date: 11 Apr 06 - 12:27 PM Judique is a small village on the north coast of Cape Breton. There are some very fine musicians there and I have spent several happy hours on a couple of separate trips making music there in the past. I think the tune Peace has posted is probably the one you are after MAG. Peace moo |
Subject: RE: Lil Judique -- origins? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Apr 06 - 01:38 PM I'm just a tad nervious playing this without context. Wanting to know something about a tune makes sense to me - but why "nervous"? |
Subject: RE: Lil Judique -- origins? From: GUEST,MAG Date: 12 Apr 06 - 02:14 AM Yep, that's it, Peace. Thanks, Peace, and all. I'm probably compulsive, McGrath; I like to know something about what I play. Maybe it's being a librarian, and a storyteller. I learn as much as I possibly can about any story I tell; cultural context, variations over time. The title is French; it's nice to know it is Cape Breton, and there is a town there named Judique. Sometimes people ask us about what we play. (novel; yes?) I think it shows respect for the material to have some idea where it came from; what people made it. Now, if I can just get them to say "Bastrangue," as "bastrang," as in "meringue," and not "Bastrangay." I'm in another band where the flute player is a languages instructor, and I can't convince them. |
