Subject: Lyr Add: THE DUBLIN REEL (from Irish Descendants)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 07 Dec 11 - 10:05 PM

My transcription from the recording at Spotify:

THE DUBLIN REEL
As sung by The Irish Descendants on "So Far So Good: The Best of the Irish Descendants" (2007)

1. A maiden fair, she had long dark hair, and her eyes like the darkest coal,
A taunting smile that would sure beguile and melt the hardest soul.
Dancing lightly, sprightly, she stole his heart with a twirl, that girl.
He'll not forget the night they met at a dance called the Dublin reel.

2. They walked out to the starry night and the crescent moon had a glow.
It felt so right with hands held tight and they looked on the town below.
Chancing a kiss, he missed her cheek and she pulled away this way,
To the bodhran sound for the fairy mound as they danced to the Dublin reel.

CHORUS: They were dancin' all night long,
Dancin' till the break of dawn.
They were dancin' all night long,
Dancin' till the break of dawn.

3. The dark of night turned into light and he asked what was her name.
"It matters not" was all he got as on the grass they lay.
List'nin' to stories, glories, scenes of another world, this girl,
She must have left while he soundly slept having danced at the Dublin reel. CHORUS

4. Weeks have gone and life goes on; now he's back on American shores.
Ev'ry night he relives that sight as he longs for it more and more.
Under a spell, he fell in love with a dancin' weed, it seems.
His only care is the maiden fair and a dance called the Dublin reel. CHORUS TWICE AND FADE

The Irish Descendants are one really fine band. I've been trying for several years to get the powers that be to bring them down here to the North Texas Irish Festival. "The Dublin Reel" is just one fine song you will find on their album, "The Best Of: So Far, So Good" - give it a listen when you can and see them live you must. Cheers.

Malcolm

Interesting! There's a guy of that name who broadcasts regularly on Lyric FM (Ireland's national classical & specialist music channel). Seems to be the same man.

I've never heard the song. If the words don't turn up soon, we can try emailing him at lyric.

Regards

Lots of dance tunes have been used as the basis for modern songs; not always with very impressive results. It's pretty unlikely that somebody would confuse St Anne's Reel with the Dublin Reel , unless they were very absent-minded. Both have "reel" in the title, of course.

The Canadian band 'The Irish Descendants' has recorded a song called Dublin Reel; you can hear a clip at http://www.irishdescendants.com/sofar.html. Another site lists lyrics, but indicates that the writer prefers that they are not displayed.

Somebody called Carl Corcoran has recorded something called Dancing the Dublin Reel. He appears to be a singer-songwriter, so it may well be a song.

Both those found via google, incidentally. They may even be the same song for all I know.

It's not "The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" he's thinking about is it Andy?

On behalf of someone else in a German forum:

I am looking for a song (lyrics, tune, chords) called "A dance called Dublin Reel". This is not a search for the tune "Dublin Reel", but a search for a song about this tune.

Does anyone know anything about it?
I couldn't find it in the Digitrad or in Google ...

TIA,
Andy/MudGuard
