I'm interested in learning to play the W. Guthrie song Joe Hillstrom, the lyrics of which I can easily find, but the melody of which seems slightly more obscure. Any tips on where I can find a snippet, a MIDI, some sheet music, or the like?

Might just note that Woody Guthrie used the tune of the traditional "John Hardy" for his song about Tom Joad. I understand that Woody hadn't read Grapes of Wrath, just saw the movie, which was one of the truly great ones.

Mick, I am sorry I can't help you with the era. All I know is what is above: that it has nature imagery and that Roy Bailey used to do it live (I don't know if he ever recorded it).

Hey Ian,

I have not forgot ye, lad. This day job is just killing me lately, and I have not been able to find it. I am on the trail though. I have gone through a number of my books and have a few to go. I am trying to dig through my collection of "The Little Red Songbook". These are published by the Industrial Workers of the World, more commonly known as the Wobblies. Hill was a wobblie organizer, and as we all no it appears he was shot more because of that than the offficial charge. It would help me somewhat if I knew about what era the song is.

Yes, Sandy--the Billy Bragg song is on an excellent recording: Don't Mourn; Organize!: the Songs of Joe Hill. The tune is from Woody Guthrie's song about Tom Joad (sorry; forgot how to spell that.) Cheers, Teresa

Has anyone checked out the recent Billy Bragg song about Joe Hill, possibly based on a Woody Guthrie poem? I've heard about it, but I've yet to hear it. It might be the one that was recently played.

By the way, the tune most of us know for "Joe Hill's Will" was written by Ethel Raim, not Ruth Rubin, and has been recorded by both Jonathan Eberhart and Joe Hickerson for Folk-Legacy. Wonderful tune, too!

Joe, Joe, Joe! Your ability to shame someone into action is second only to Catspaw's and for all I know he may be huge and frightening. (you too, actually) I'm trying to learn the computer as fast as I can, but there's so much of it! I still get at least one surprise a day. The latest: Trying to find some info on figure skater Ocsana Baiol (the tiny Russian orphan) I was confronted with: BEAUTIFUL RUSSIAN GIRLS WHO WANT TO MARRY YOU! There are several songs about Joe Hill at Manfred J. Helfert's excellent History In Song (clickclickclick) site. Don't think the site has the song Ian is looking for, and I don't know if it has any songs that aren't already in our database. The songs are presented very nicely, though, and the background information is excellent.
Rick, Rick, Rick - How are we going to go about make you computer-literate? It's a little tough to talk you through the process from here. If that wife of yours can't teach you, I'd be willing to try. But yes, I think there are several of us who would be interested in seeing the song. You will note that I rarely type lyrics for the database myself. My basic function here is to shame others into providing information. I think I do that quite well....

Received an entire recording of Joe Hill songs/stories from my husband, but same husband has put it away somewhere (sorry to say he's better at putting things back than I amO and can't lay my hands on it. When I get a chance, I'll forward title/label, etc.

I can't tell from this thread what the song is - but I thought I'd pass it along that "Joe Hill's Will" (by Joe Hill) was collected orally by Phil Thomas in northern British Columbia, as a recitation, in the early '70's. The informant was sure that Joe Hill himself had been present at the building of the line (the Grand Trunk Pacific, c. 1914). He had, after all, been preent down south in the Fraser valley when he wrote "Where the Fraser River Flows".

Thanks, folks, but it is none of the songs you have mentioned or directed me towards. As I remember it, it has the imagery of walking through a forest, and it is as if Joe Hill's character has been absorbed into nature. It is not an overtly political song. I don't think anyone who didn't know of Joe Hill would learn anything about him from it. It is, though, a beautiful song. The person I heard it from said his wife taped it from a radio broadcast of a Roy Bailey gig, if that's any help.

Woody Guthrie wrote one called "Joe Hillstrom". Fourteen verses telling of the events leading up to his execution. Could that be the one you're looking for?

If "Joe Hill's Will" is not the song in question, I urge folks to hear it. The tune (by Ruth Rubin I think) is wonderful, and Joe Hickerson's recording of it on Folk-Legacy still gives me the chills!
