Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: GUEST,rtstaf@yah00.com Date: 26 Jul 04 - 08:22 PM I'm interested in learning to play the W. Guthrie song Joe Hillstrom, the lyrics of which I can easily find, but the melody of which seems slightly more obscure. Any tips on where I can find a snippet, a MIDI, some sheet music, or the like? |

Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Big Mick Date: 27 Feb 99 - 09:28 AM Not yet, my friend, but I am going to call the Wobblies in on it next. Mick |

Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Sandy Paton Date: 25 Feb 99 - 12:18 AM Might just note that Woody Guthrie used the tune of the traditional "John Hardy" for his song about Tom Joad. I understand that Woody hadn't read Grapes of Wrath, just saw the movie, which was one of the truly great ones. |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Ian HP Date: 24 Feb 99 - 01:40 PM Mick, I am sorry I can't help you with the era. All I know is what is above: that it has nature imagery and that Roy Bailey used to do it live (I don't know if he ever recorded it). |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Big Mick Date: 24 Feb 99 - 01:07 PM Hey Ian, I have not forgot ye, lad. This day job is just killing me lately, and I have not been able to find it. I am on the trail though. I have gone through a number of my books and have a few to go. I am trying to dig through my collection of "The Little Red Songbook". These are published by the Industrial Workers of the World, more commonly known as the Wobblies. Hill was a wobblie organizer, and as we all no it appears he was shot more because of that than the offficial charge. It would help me somewhat if I knew about what era the song is. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Ian HP Date: 23 Feb 99 - 03:48 PM Rick, thanks for the posting, which I have just seen. No, I do not yet have the words and yes, I would still like them. Ta! |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Teresa Date: 22 Feb 99 - 06:00 PM Yes, Sandy--the Billy Bragg song is on an excellent recording: Don't Mourn; Organize!: the Songs of Joe Hill. The tune is from Woody Guthrie's song about Tom Joad (sorry; forgot how to spell that.) Cheers, Teresa |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 Feb 99 - 05:12 PM Has anyone checked out the recent Billy Bragg song about Joe Hill, possibly based on a Woody Guthrie poem? I've heard about it, but I've yet to hear it. It might be the one that was recently played. By the way, the tune most of us know for "Joe Hill's Will" was written by Ethel Raim, not Ruth Rubin, and has been recorded by both Jonathan Eberhart and Joe Hickerson for Folk-Legacy. Wonderful tune, too! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Philippa Date: 22 Feb 99 - 03:36 PM Joe, thanks for that History in Song site; I know where I'm going on the web next time I can't get through to the Mudcat Caf‚! |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: rick fielding Date: 22 Feb 99 - 11:48 AM Joe, Joe, Joe! Your ability to shame someone into action is second only to Catspaw's and for all I know he may be huge and frightening. (you too, actually) I'm trying to learn the computer as fast as I can, but there's so much of it! I still get at least one surprise a day. The latest: Trying to find some info on figure skater Ocsana Baiol (the tiny Russian orphan) I was confronted with: BEAUTIFUL RUSSIAN GIRLS WHO WANT TO MARRY YOU! Three hours later when I managed to escape from that hell, (none of them were looking for a married folksinger) they got me again with:KATERINA WITT..ON THE ICE, IN THE WOODS! I'm learning Joe. Hoo-Boy am I learning! |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Feb 99 - 01:59 AM There are several songs about Joe Hill at Manfred J. Helfert's excellent History In Song (clickclickclick) site. Don't think the site has the song Ian is looking for, and I don't know if it has any songs that aren't already in our database. The songs are presented very nicely, though, and the background information is excellent. Rick, Rick, Rick - How are we going to go about make you computer-literate? It's a little tough to talk you through the process from here. If that wife of yours can't teach you, I'd be willing to try. But yes, I think there are several of us who would be interested in seeing the song. You will note that I rarely type lyrics for the database myself. My basic function here is to shame others into providing information. I think I do that quite well.... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Susan A-R Date: 18 Feb 99 - 10:25 PM Received an entire recording of Joe Hill songs/stories from my husband, but same husband has put it away somewhere (sorry to say he's better at putting things back than I amO and can't lay my hands on it. When I get a chance, I'll forward title/label, etc. Susan |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Jon Bartlett Date: 18 Feb 99 - 03:39 AM I can't tell from this thread what the song is - but I thought I'd pass it along that "Joe Hill's Will" (by Joe Hill) was collected orally by Phil Thomas in northern British Columbia, as a recitation, in the early '70's. The informant was sure that Joe Hill himself had been present at the building of the line (the Grand Trunk Pacific, c. 1914). He had, after all, been preent down south in the Fraser valley when he wrote "Where the Fraser River Flows". |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: rick fielding Date: 16 Feb 99 - 12:08 PM Ian, Roy Bailey just sent me the words to the "Joe Hill song", but I'm not sure if you still need them. Let me know and I'll re-type them here. I know there's an easier way to do this on computer, but my wife's not here to show me how! |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Ian HP Date: 14 Feb 99 - 04:32 AM Thanks, folks, but it is none of the songs you have mentioned or directed me towards. As I remember it, it has the imagery of walking through a forest, and it is as if Joe Hill's character has been absorbed into nature. It is not an overtly political song. I don't think anyone who didn't know of Joe Hill would learn anything about him from it. It is, though, a beautiful song. The person I heard it from said his wife taped it from a radio broadcast of a Roy Bailey gig, if that's any help. |

Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 Feb 99 - 01:52 AM Wouldn't be the Phil Ochs one would it? To the tune of "John Hardy". |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Nathan Sarvis Date: 13 Feb 99 - 11:47 PM Woody Guthrie wrote one called "Joe Hillstrom". Fourteen verses telling of the events leading up to his execution. Could that be the one you're looking for? |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: rick fielding Date: 13 Feb 99 - 02:34 PM If "Joe Hill's Will" is not the song in question, I urge folks to hear it. The tune (by Ruth Rubin I think) is wonderful, and Joe Hickerson's recording of it on Folk-Legacy still gives me the chills! |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Barbara Date: 13 Feb 99 - 02:15 PM Ian, check out your "description above". You might want to repost it. The Mudcat has been hungry recently is eating the ends of people's posts. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Ian HP Date: 13 Feb 99 - 01:53 PM Thanks, Joe, I did that, but the song isn't on DT. I can't remember the words, but the description of the song's meaning is above. |

Subject: RE: Joe Hill song (not the usual one) From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Feb 99 - 05:32 AM If you put [Joe Hill] in square brackets in the search box on this page, you'll find a lot. I'm thinking it might be the song about Joe's Hill's last will that you heard. -Joe Offer- |
