Well we got it sorted! After taking advice from this thread and listening to the CD of "At the drop of another hat" and staying up till all hours on the keyboard playing the thing 500 times we got close enough. No wonder I haven't played the song before now. Maybe it's time I did!

Cheers
Mark

I do think Cannily Cannily would be a good contrast to the others!
You don't get many raiway lullabies.

Do you know it? I think Steeleye Span recorded it, and the words are here.

But best wishes for the gig anyway.

(From an ex-train-spotter or shouldn't I admit that. Want a picture of the last Claude Hamilton, waiting to be broken up at Stratford in 1961?)

Yes - I like the m7b5. That would be Em7b5 in the version I gave, replacing the Bb (and having the Bb note on top: X7X786). (Fullteron's chords in C with capo on 5 give same key F, as on the recording).

Amongst the songs I've got on the list apart from Slow Train are:
Moses of the Mail
A Servant of the Company by Paul Connor
Ais Gill by Dave Goulder
Station People by DG
Alice White by Alan Bell
Last Train by Stanley Accrington
No Use For Him by Eric Bogle
In the Sidings by Cyril Tawney
A poem by Les Barker about 8F freight trains
and one or two others as well

I've also got a few sound clips of my mate Frank who is now 77ish and used to work as a relief signalman for 47 years before retiring. I recorded a lot of his tales of steam and the railway and we're going to put a few of the tales in amongst the songs.

I'm doing this with Chris Harvey who is also a steam railway enthuisiast - he specialises in old engine sheds.

The songs above are all British which is a conscious decision rather than use American songs which was first suggested by the organisers who to be fair to them aren't folkies but my partner's mother knew I did this sort of stuff and asked if I could contribute something.

We're going to do a CD of the songs for the Shrewsbury and Montgomery Railway Society to sell in their shop when they get things sorted but that will be available from them not me.

Cheers
Mark

What other songs do you have?

Cannily Cannily by Ewan McColl sounds a possibility.

Thanks for the help so far people.
This is one of those songs that I've put off learning for too long but I've been asked to do an evening of railway songs in Shrewsbury in June and it's a "must do" song!

Without getting into the "what is a folk song" debate, musically, this song is way above the three chord trick of most songs and doesn't sound right without those finger twisting, mind bending, brain numbing chord runs that put people off jazz guitar for life!

I shall have a go at what's been put on here so far - it's probably very close to what I do already but the addition of those sus4, maj7, 7b5 etc makes all the difference.

Cheers
Mark

Am/maj7         Am7         D        Dm        Gish        G        G        /

I Capod on the fifth fret to get these

No-ones mentioned the Bm7b5. (023230) A.K.A. B half diminished. Its a very distinctive twist at the end of line 3

Am with a maj7 is used at the beginning of the last line - its dissonant and sounds horrible out of context but its in there.

If in doubt, play wild rover!

Cheers Mark

Oops Finger trouble

You can download FIND MIDI CHORDS from my web site

(This used to be a commercial program, distributed by HANDS-ON MIDI software, a major supplier of professional MIDI backing tracks)

You will also find HARMONY, which can add the chords if you only have the melody (in MIDI or in abc format).

And I also wrote a program which creates a Karaoke format (.KAR) file with chords displayed instead of words.

I did come across a program called MIDIscan some years ago. I think I still have a copy of the demo on a floppy disk somewhere.

The demo worked sufficiently well that if you scanned a page of a score, and it made a MIDI file, my program FIND MIDI CHORDS would give you the chords!

Like most OCR, the output was not 100%, but good enough to recognise chords.

Bit of a roundabout method, but it worked.

From: Mick Pearce (MCP)

Mark

I've just had a quick listen and a rough version of the start is:

Miller's(1F) Dale for (5Am)Tideswell ...(3Gm) (1C7)
next 2 similarly
Kirby Muxloe ...
Mow Cop and Scholar Green ...

No (1F)more will I (1Am)go to (1Dm)Blandford (1F)Forum and (3Gm)Morte(1C7)hoe (3Gm) (1C7)
On the (1F)slow (1Am)train from (1Dm)Midsomer (1F)Norton and (5Dm)Mum(5Gm7)by (3C7)Road. (5Dm)(5Gm7)(3C7)
No (5F)churns, no (5Am)porter, no (6Dm7)cat on a (3Gm)seat
At (3Gm)Chorlton-cum-(3C7)Hardy or (6Bb)Chester-le-(5A7)Street.
We (10Dm)won't be (9DmMaj7)meeting ag(6Dm7)ain (6Dm6)
On the (3Gm)Slow (6Gm) (10Gm) (9C7)Train.

Here I'm using the inital number as the fret the chord starts on. If I had more time I'd do a better job of the chord description, but eg 1F is XX4211, 1Am is XX2210; most of them are obvious. 5Gm7 is XX5766, 6Dm7 is XX7768. The 10Dm.. section is XX0(10)(10)(10), XX0(10)(10)9, XX7768, XX7767, giving a chromatic descent on the 1st string.

I'm busy with other things at the moment, but if I have time tomorrow night, I'll have a closer look and do the chords for the bridge. Hope this is a help (if not, I can translate Terry's music too if you want).

Mick

Anybody got the chords for "Slow Train" by Flanders and Swann?

I can have a stab at most of it but if anybody has them from a book or sheet music so I can compare my effort with Donald Swann then I'd be grateful.

Cheers
Mark
