Subject: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!!
From: Amos
Date: 25 Apr 06 - 10:11 AM

This is an edited PermaThread™, and all messages posted
here are subject to editing and deletion.
This thread is intended to serve as a forum
about recordings made available by Mudcatters of songs that have been placed in
Áine's Mudcat Songbook. Amos is responsible for editing and maintaining this
thread.

I am happy to report that a little project I have been working on is acheiving its first goals in the form of a new website for Catter entertainment and listening pleasure.

The site is Songs from the Mudcat Songbook and a prototype of it is available for your viewing. It presents MP3 recordings of songs that have been written by Mudcatters and placed in Áine's Mudcat Songbook. So far, these are about a dozen recordings of songs I had sent in for Song Challenges, but the Site is open to any recording of any Songbook song by any Catter. About six of these were played on Mudcat Radio long ago.

The home page can be found here:

Songs from the Mudcat Songbook

The songs are listed on the Song List page (surprisingly enough). The list of titles on the left has corresponding links to the threads the songs came from (if any) on the right.

So if you ever wondered what "Incandescent Pickle II", or "The Gentleman's Club" sounded like, now you can find out!

Caveats:

1. Although I have speeded it up by normalizing all the graphics to lower resolution, the initial pages still load somewhat slowly, depending on your bandwidth. Using a Cable Modem at home, about 4 seconds. From work, on Windows, about 45-120 seconds.

2. Only those song titles which are bolded on the Song List page have recordings yet. But all of the links to the original threads should work.

3. The recordings suck, some of them.

Plans

Phase II of this project is to make new recordings for the ones that are poor quality, and add recordings for those not yet made.

Phase III is to receive recordings from any other Mudcatters who have recorded their Songbook songs for inclusion on the web site.

These two phases will run concurrently. Send 'em in any time. Send me a PM if you need an addy. MP3s can be emailed, also.

The site is in Beta trials, so drop by and offer advice on how to improve it.

Enjoy,

Amos

I'm confused. (Actually, people have been telling me I was confused for years!)

I know as a fact that my Garden Gnome song, Can't You Stand To Let Him Go? is/was in the Mudcat Songbook. It was from Part 25, the Garden Gnome thread, found HERE

I don't find it at your site, in either listing.

I'd be happy to record an MP3 and submit it, if in the smallest way encouraged.

Dave:

Make an MP3 and email it to me and I will make a page for it.

I thought it too overwhelming to offer to make a page for every song in the Songbook. I listed ones (a) I have mp3s for or (b) I am going to make mp3s for and will add (c) those others provide recordings of, which I will add as they occur. OK?

There are thousands of great songs in the song books. This site will only list those for which audio is in the offing. I wish I could do them all!

Yes PLEASE!!! Record it and email it to me.

Aside from a couple of Áine's and one cowritten with LEJ, they are all ones I did, which is a lopsided representation, but all I had to work with in setting it up initially.

Looks as though you've put a lot of work into it. Some of the Quicktimes didn't work; only showed the symbol, but not the slider bar. Also, I think it'd be better of you make the font size bigger for the lyrics. And, please, think about listing the songs in alphabetical order; it'd be much easier to find them that way. It would also be nice to sing see (maybe that was an unconscious slip?:-) the songwriter/performer's name listed with each, if possible, on the Song List page. Great work and project. Thanks!

WoW Amos! Wonderful labour of love! Thank you so much!

Strange how the song challenges lead to other stuff too. I used the Scientific Bees thread as the inspiration for some cover art for the CD, Agents For Beehive.

The album title was originally from a sign regarding a wool supply outlet, but because of Mudcat, that was not where my mind automatically went.

Thanks for the suggestions, Dave and Kat, very helpful. I will alphabetize the Song List by title.

The load time appears to be a function of bandwidth. If you have DSL or cable you'll have better luck than if you are using a phone modem.

ALthough a few of the sound files ended up being turned in .mov files for reasons I haven't spotted, most of them are .mp3 files. I believe the display which includes a play bar is a Quicktime widget, though. Let me know if it works for you to play any song, Bill.

The soundfile part of the page is the last bit to load and takes th elongest; leave the page up, and watch the load progress bar; when it is finished, the Q symbol should turn into a play bar.

funny, I have 2 applications other than Quicktime that are supposed to play .mov files, but this page won't give me access to the file...it seems to suggest it is streaming...it that the case? Can I download the files?

and....I see ONLY Quicktime files. Where are any MP3s?

Why does 50 mgs of stuff need to load in order to play a single song?

Yes, there are some great and beautiful songs. I just listened to the first one, Across the Miles and Over the Years. I have cable and use WINXP; it took over two minutes to load, so I think it's a good thing you are going to try to do something slightly different.

Also, I noticed some slight differences in the typed lyrics and the actual words of the singing:

2nd verse: text says, "Castles of Rome, Gutters of Paris,"
singing was, "Castles of Paris, Gutter of Rome."

3rd verse: text says "to the far hills of Arcturus"
singing was: "to the hills of Arcturus"

4th verse: "song of the ocean, meets the dreams"
singing was: "songs of the ocean meet the dreams"

Not being picky, just know that I would want to know if I'd missed something like that. I know it's difficult when working with so much material.

Thanks for doing this!

kat

The discrepancies between words written and words sung is just routine folkie memory failure, I guess.

Well, it'll be treasured, I guess, if I can streamline it a bit so it loads in reasonable time! Otherwise it will useless.

OK. Let's try this sucker again! :>)

The songlist file was the big horsepill, and I have slashed it to a thin, graceful table, duly alphabetized, with authors. Right now most of the authors is me, but that will change if others care to get some recordings out.

The individual song files were in a very byte-intensive AIFF format and are now all compressed to MP3. They still stream, though. To make them rightclick-downloadable, I'd have to hand tailor all the pages over. Which I don't have time for.

The sound files as mentioned are crude ones from long ago, but they are bearable.

If YOU have SONGS in the MUDCAT SONGBOOK which you can make a sound file of, you may (if you so decide) send it to me and I will make a page and add it to the song index. If you send WAV oir AIFF files I may compress them. If you send analog files on tape or if you send CDs or DAT tapes or minidisks, I will transfer them when I find the time to do it

Enjoy.

Let me know if you trip over other bugs. Bloody HTML is a life-long hobby!

Åine has not been on line very often of late, being fully occupied with other activities, but if you leave her a PM perhaps she will get an answer to you next time she comes by.

Thanks for the suggestion re the Welcome page.

This is not, itself, a song book substitute, but a place to post links to recordings that have been made of songs from the Songbook. All the songs on the SOng List page either have or will have recordings posted, and the existing recordings will be improved as I have time. Anyone who wishes to send me an MP3, AIFF, WAV or CD of a Mudcat Songbook song will have it included on this page.

Nigel: the Blanket Permission is a jolly good idea, which I shouldn't have overlooked. Thanks.

Geez, one of these days I may have to get back into the Song Challenge business. Hmmmmm, I wonder how many belly dancing costumes I'd have to sell to get some new html software? Would I have to sell my new belly button ring? (hahahahahaha)

Well done, a chara, you're the best.

A very funny story about garden gnomes who had to be dressed for the sake of public decency was posted long ago in Song Challenge 96.

And a very funny song, written in response, has now been added to the growing collection of recordings available for your listening pleasure at the Songs from the Mudcat Songbook site.

The piece is called The Band Used to Play in the Garden, and it is good for a few grins.

A bawdy ballad inspired by Song Challenge 60 has been added to the noble Songlist of the Merry Melodies from the Mudcat Songbook page, relating to the strange tale of passion aided by nasal spray.

The song is called The Aisle Where Sildenafil Stands and it can be found on this page.

One of Kevin McGrath's most beautiful songs, White Snow of the Springtime was recorded several years ago by our own Gaelic Goddess for inclusion in the Mudcat CD -- Plum.

This lovely rendition is now available on the Songs from the Mudcat Soingbook song list. Or you can reach the recording directly by clicking here.

Enjoy!!

The links on the Songlist have not only been fixed, they have been IMPROVED by the addition of MMario's heartfelt rendition of Lullaby for a Borrowed Child (The Uncle's Lament).

We need to hear from Leo himself as to how this good song came into existence.

Meanwhile enjoy the selection at the Mudcat Songbook Song List.

Ref the Bruce Murdoch song. Yes, it's great... and thanks for posting... Nothing against you or against Bruce or anyone... but in the song he says "I seek the voice of honesty". That's what I'm doing here. Why were there never any protest songs about the phony war in former Yugoslavia? Why no songs for all the people we killed there and the lies told (the 10,000 dead "Kosovars", for example... there were only a few hundred before we bombed and killed them)? How we helped with ethnic cleansing? Are even all the musicians just sheeple? And no one ever mentions our oil pipeline (yes, oil pipeline... the AMBO pipeline) that is proposed to run straight under our camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. Is war only okay when it's Mr. Clinton's war instead of Mr. Bush's? What about all our soldiers still in that hole called Kosovo? Sorry, I just wonder. No one seems to protest the politically correct version of things spoon fed by the media (as in bombing Serbia is good, bombing Iraq bad) ... sorry, I've been overseas and I came home disappointed (no, not a soldier -- a refugee/humanitarian worker I am, not military). I'm just trying to figure out what's happened to my country. Thanks, ya'll.

Moofus:

You are not alone. Why not join up and start a thread yourself on what has happened to our country? I think you will find many kindred souls who hate hypocrisy in high places, whether Clinton's or Bush's.    This particular thread should be kept for the discussion of the Songbook site. Welcome to the Cat, and I hope we'll see more of you.

Cool! Good going Amos. I toured the Mudcat challenge page looking, because I have my own untuned ego, for songs I had written. I was amazed at how many. I had forgotten most of them. Thanks for all your hard work.

Well, you're more than welcome, but when you get A Round Toowit, you can use it to record a few and send me the MP3s or AIFFs and I'll add them to the collection, Brett!

Lullaby for a borrowed child came about 1/2 due to thankfullness for all the people that have (very generously) shared their kids with me; 1/2 due to recognition of mortality, both my own and that of "my" kids (one of whom had suicided but a short time before) and 1/2 due to whingeing self-pity due to being a childless bachelor.

Yes - that makes three halves - but it was that kind of a mood.

First time I ever sang it for anyone else I ended up with two youngsters in my lap -- and the first public performance of it was with a toddler in my arms. It really does go over better with a babe in arms.

Wonderful!

Now, I 'spose I may as well post this here as anywhere - A little history and information about "The Mudcat Songbook" as well as Aine's Mudcat Songbook would be appreciated by this person who has been around Mudcat for quite a bit, but not that quite a bit. Bein' as how I have yet to die from terminal uniqueness, I suspect there are at least a few others who would appreciate learning a bit....

Are both of these intended to be collections of wonderful of artifacts from Mudcat days of yore, made more accessible as the folks working at doing so have time, in the process of being slowly compiled by volunteers as they have time for this formidable task, or salvaged after the original caretakers and compilers moved on?

Aine built the original Mudcat Songnook and tended it carefully for several years.

After she moved on to other interests, it stayed as it had been until the whole site where it had been hosted was being bought, and several steps were taken to prevent it from being lost. One was Joe's gradual effort to bring the songs in the Songbook over to our own repository gradually. ANother was some shuffle external to the Cat to re-host the whole of the old site on a new site., not sure by whom.

The page I created, called "Songs from the Mudcat Songbook" was just to provide links to recordings where they existed to songs that had been in the Mudcat Songbook.

I returned to these lovely links after four years absence, and am delighted with the memories these songs evoke of the heady days when Song Challenges walked the land and Cowchips graced the mantelpieces of the Minstrels and Poets.

There was a whole mess of fine songwriting going on in them there days.

If any of you forgotten Scriveners want me to, I will gladly seek to add links to any recording you make of your own songs--just send me a URL to link to or an MP3 file.

Regards,

A.

I got pretty far on the PermaThread, transferring songs form Geocities to Mudcat. But then life interfered. If anybody would like to continue and complete the transfer project, let me know.
