Subject: RE: Chord Req: Dancing in the street From: GUEST Date: 27 Apr 06 - 03:28 AM From memory, and I'm not sure if this is the original key: The verses are sung over E7 so I suppose it's the middle section you're looking for........... (Gsharp7) It doesn't matter what you wear (Csharpminor) just as long as you are there (Fsharpminor) so come on, every etc, etc, (B7) Everywhere around the world.......... C-flat(No, that's not part of it, that's my handle!!) |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Dancing in the street From: M.Ted Date: 27 Apr 06 - 11:11 AM This is actually pretty simple to play, assuming that you can play a basic funk beat--even though it is the basic beat for a lot of 60's and 70's soul and pop stuff, I think of it as the "Chain of Fools" groove, because that song is just one chord-- Anyway, Dancin' in the Streets in the key of C: ||:C9:|| 8x (for each verse) ||:F7:|| 4x (for "Music, sweet, sweet, music") ||:E9 E9/E9 E9/Am Am/Am Am/D9 D9/G7 Gsus4:||("It doesn't matter what you wear") ||:C9:|| 8x for last verse, repeat for fade out. You can substitute a C7, E7 for the ninth chords, if it is easier--but you should play closed position, moveable chords(or barre chords) not open chords, because you'll have trouble getting the right feel with them. C9: 3-x-2-3-3-x F7: 1-x-1-2-x-x E9 is C9 fingering played on the 7th fret D9 is the C9 fingering on the 5th fret The Am fingering is like the D9, but with the third string raised a step- 4-x-4-4-4- G7 is the F7 on the 3rd fret-for the G7 sus4, just move the note on the fourth string up I fret-- You can interchange the seventh and ninths, and you can use just one fingering and slide it up and down the neck-- If you can't play a funk beat, just play one downstroke for each count(four counts to a measure, one measure between each pair of slash marks-- Sorry if I am explaining things that you already know-- Good luck with this, it is one of those songs that everyone loves to hear, and, because most of the song is just one chord, everyone can play along, for most of it, anyway-- |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Dancing in the street From: M.Ted Date: 27 Apr 06 - 11:20 AM Oops!! Let a couple measures out-- This: ||:E9 E9/E9 E9/Am Am/Am Am/D9 D9/G7 Gsus4:||("It doesn't matter what you wear") Should be this: ||:E9 E9/E9 E9/Am Am/Am Am/D9 D9/D9 D9/G7 G7/G7sus4 G7sus4:||("It doesn't matter what you wear")-- I left out two measures, one of D9, one of the G-- Sorry. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Dancing in the street From: M.Ted Date: 27 Apr 06 - 12:25 PM As to actual key(I posted C because it is easiest to understand and transpose)--Martha and the Vandellas did it in E(E9th chord), as did The Mamas and the Papas, David Bowie and Mick Jagger's duet is in B, of all things, while Rockapella is in Bb--Greatful Dead in A--Van Halen in D--the Sister Act version was in Eb--Sorry, probably more than you wanted to know-- |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Dancing in the street From: M.Ted Date: 28 Apr 06 - 04:37 PM Just refreshing this so that Kathryn can find it if she comes back-- |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Dancing in the street From: PoppaGator Date: 11 May 06 - 12:22 PM Thanks to M.Ted for acharacteristically complete answer. Don't apologize, Ted ~ even if your input is not for everybody, there's always a few of us (certainly including the original questioner) who want the help we can get. One-chord songs (or songs like this one, where the entire verse, if not the chorus, is on one chord) are pretty dern difficult to perform well. Especially for beginnners, and especially for anyone trying to learn the song from paper. |
