I got home at 1:30am! My car died again, electrics packed in, had to limp home with practically no lights and no wipers in the rain! Put the battery on charge overnight, got it going this morning and my friendly garage is trying to find out what's wrong right now. Thought I was going to buy a PA. Looks like I'll be paying to fix the car instead. Bugger! |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds - May06 things From: Ross Date: 23 May 06 - 10:08 AM North Hertfordshire's favourite Ceilidh Band LAUGHING GRAVY return on Friday 26th May after a short break, re-vitalised and refreshed, to offer the very best of English acoustic dance music to the renowned Unicorn Ceilidhs. Based on years of experience, the band's style is firmly rooted in the English tradition, but draws its influences from far and wide. French, Scottish, Welsh and American roots are explored in an eclectic repertoire that gives energy to the dancers, and leads them into the figures and forms of the dances. Featuring fiddle, accordion, melodeon, rhythm guitar and bass, the arrangements combine to keep the dancers up dancing all evening! Caller for the dance is our good friend and most excellent supporter of the Ceilidhs – GRAHAM AVERY. Graham has a fine repertoire of dances, suitable for both beginners and more experienced visitors. Unicorn Ceilidhs take place on the last Friday of the month at Hitchin Town Hall, Brand Street, Hitchin. Doors open 7.30 Dancing 8.00 'til late. Real Ale bar. More info from 01582 733113 / 724261 |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds - May06 things From: Hitchin' John Date: 23 May 06 - 05:45 AM Hi Ross I'll bring some stuff on Wednesday and improvise a PA. It will be better than last time - but I'll also think about what I can sort out for one that is better still, for the future. For Wednesday I'll bring a couple of bass amps and run them off a mixer. I have plenty of mikes. I have lots of bits - but not a small handy PA. Some where I have 2 2x12" cabs and a battered old 90 watt(hissy) mixer amp. But I'll never get the cabs in the car along with any instruments - no fun then! I also have the biggest bass amp combo you have ever seen if anybody wants to deafen their neighbours. Free loan to anybody that is getting into grunge or deaf metal. (size of a chest of drawers - 1x15" bass reflex cabinet - very heavy and also top heavy - amp at top) Anyway see you Wednesday for mayhem |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds - May06 things From: Ross Date: 23 May 06 - 05:12 AM Hi Steve - I haven't got a PA either We have been reliant on friends of the session for lending us equipment Hopefully there will be some feedback on this thread before Wednesday Crikey - our threads gone serious |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds - May06 things From: Singing Referee Date: 22 May 06 - 12:27 PM Ross hope I've not caused confusion! The one esential bit of kit I'm short of is a PA! I was rather hoping there would already be one there, as there was on the one and only time I've been to your open mic session before. I wanted to bring my electronic gizmo's to plug into it to try out the backing tracks I've created before I splash out on a PA. |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds - May06 things From: breezy Date: 22 May 06 - 08:14 AM Steve's P A show will be most enjoyable, if his performance at the Constitutional club in St Albans was anything to go by. Make sure the landlord catches him 'in the act' I dared him to do it at the Rose and crown but he bottled it. I would welcome him doing it at the Windward Club btw next Sunday , room for floor singers, as george papavgeris showcases his latest songs. Plus Fleggy and Connolley and who knows who else |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds - May06 things From: Hitchin' John Date: 17 May 06 - 10:12 AM Catherine - my advise with any instrument is try not use a lot of force. A lot of parts break easier than you think - as you obviously felt, if it is not easy then maybe you need advice at least for the first time you change strings. What bit were you unscrewing? - The tuning pegs unwinding? John Hi Ross re the open mic I can understand your concern about Mikes/PA last time I didn't know Bert wasn't bringing his PA and so was improvising with the portastudio somewhat haphazardly. With a little discussion we can improve on that. Re attendence/ performance I think we get the same thing if not the same numbers for the open mic as for the Folk/Acoustic - people turn up that want to play and then we get a small audience as well - there are just more people who want to perform at the acoustic nights. If you want to build the audience that you are right we will need more focused perfomances and a bit more publicity probably. John |
