Subject: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: HiHo_Silver Date: 02 May 06 - 02:35 PM On or about 1969 Chet Atkins and Hank snow recorded an instrumental "WHEELS". I am looking for sheet music or Tab - prefeably a flat picking version - of this composition. Is this, by any chance, the song and melody written by Gram Parsons? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: Peace Date: 02 May 06 - 03:26 PM A hit with that instrumental piece was from a group called The String-A-Longs. However, The Ventures recorded it also. I cannot search just now, but the above info might help those who can. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 02 May 06 - 09:57 PM There was a song called 'Wheels' - which had words - think it WAS to the tune you mention - got it somewhere in my music books - will find it when looking for something else in about 3 years time... :-) "Listen to the rhythm of love's wheels" comes to mind as a line from it... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: HiHo_Silver Date: 03 May 06 - 10:22 AM Thanks to all for your efforts. However, I am now having a problem opening the files. The site suggested by Sorcha goes into Guitar Pro etc. and downloads a file in Gp3 format. I have tried everything in my limited knowledge of the PC world to open the file but keep comiong up with a message " |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: Scrump Date: 03 May 06 - 11:00 AM The vocal version mentioned was recorded by Robb Storme in the early 1960s. Try http://www.sheetmusicwarehouse.co.uk/details.php?ref=1405 for a copy of the sheet music. UK folks will probably remember the Joe Loss version "Wheels Cha-Cha". The tune was written by Norman Petty (of Buddy Holly fame). |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: IanC Date: 03 May 06 - 11:41 AM "Wheels" was used for "About Anglia" the Anglia TV regional roundup programme during the 1960s, so I'm very familiar with it. It was also used by the "Musical Muscleman". ;-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 May 06 - 04:49 PM Allmusic.com says the famous guitar instrumental WHEELS was written by Norman Petty. Some sources also list Richard Stephens and Jimmy Torres as co-writers. The String-A-Longs made it into a big hit in 1961. Norman Petty was their producer. Stephens and Torres were members of the band. It was also recorded by Chet Atkins, Al Caiola, Leo Kottke, Sam McGee, The Shaggs, Hank Snow, Billy Vaughn, The Ventures, and a few others. Several people have written different songs with the same title, including Gram Parsons. |

To me it is 2 segments of 8 bars each that should be played in an AABA format with the last 4 bars (line 7 of the ABC) used as a final ending. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: greg stephens Date: 16 May 06 - 06:55 AM An interesting(?) snippet of traditional music related stuff: the very influential "English Country Music" LP organised by Reg Hall and released in 1965 featured, among others, Walter Bulwer on fiddle and Billy Cooper on hammered dulcimer. To get it all onto one LP, and also to present the picture that Reg Hall wanted to convey about the traditional repertoire, certain tunes were left out. These out-takes, which appeared on the later Topic reissue on CD, included Billy Cooper playing "Wheels" as a dulcimer solo. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Wheels tune from 1969 From: GUEST Date: 16 May 06 - 07:48 PM Thanks to all for your interest. ABC's from Norval is pretty much what I was looking for. Will add my own personal variations. Thanks again |
