There may not be anything quite like the Mudcat Cafe.

However, if you select [Links] from the choices at the top of the main Mudcat forum page, you'll find sites for lots of other types of music and can check them out as to whether there's any real conversation/give-and-take. Some of them have visitors' comments at least. "Cowpie" may have a discussion forum for C&W, check it out.

No, I'm afeared there's nothing like Mudcat, except for the very occasional thread on the Rec.music.folk newsgroup ... maybe, maybe, maybe. http://mirabilis.com has some discussion forums on their website, but you have to register, and, well, they don't seem to have folk or blues. Teresa

Sorry; I goofed. I'm HTML-illiterate, I'm afraid, but I'll try typing this again:

Hope I don't end up gumming up the works--poor 'catters who have to come along and edit such nonsense; you're muchly appreciated! Cheers, Teresa

could find nothing at http://www.mirabilis.com except an offer to start a discussion group. Maybe the folk police at this site are going to have to open up a bit if it is really not possible to talk with performers of other genre on other sites. When i read some of the folk (what is/ what isn't) threads i keep remembering a quote from Pete Seeger where he said that such discussions missed the point. To him it was more a question of is it a good song or isn't it. I would still like to find discussion groups like this discussing other styles of music. Any help greatly appreciated. I've been through all of mudcat's links. {many dead ends need to be removed or updated :) }

Ah puzzled, although I, like most of us am a graet fan of Pete Seeger, I think he missed the point in that quote. No one I think, would suggest that the set "folk" and the set "good songs" are coincident. We all I am sure enjoy "good" songs whatever their origin or classification; but we will disagree, and argue about which songs are "good", just as frequently and vehemently as to which are "folk".

The argument about whether a song is "folk" or not may seem sterile to some, but then so would a debate about the classification of snails, rhododendrons, or tufted ducks; but people are still prepared to devote their life's work to these issues.

I think you would agree that we discuss a very catholic choice in music, but this is after all a folk and blues site, you would not expect to go to a site devoted to cannonballs and be able to discuss APFSDS and HESH rounds just because they are both fired from a gun, so I'm afraid the only answer may be to start your own site. You may of course find that it is the subject matter here which attracts the type of converation you enjoy, still it might be worth a go.

In the meanwhile I'm sure we won't mind the odd side track, -just don't mention Niel Diamond

well i would have never brought up Neil Diamond but i might want to ask something about The Hoosier Hot Shots. There is nothing of info about them in the archives as far as i have been able to dig up. But I am sure that "Folk" is not the right catagory for them whether the ruddy duck can recognize a tufted duck or what.
And if I wanted to find out who did the tune with the repeated phrase "When I get that Jingle in my Jeans" on an old 78 record that is without a label, where do i go to ask that question? It is western Swing not Folk or Blues.
Do these interests mean i have to leave and start my own game somewhere else?
Not neccessarily as you say because you will accept the occasional side track. Or I ask again are there other places like this in other genres that anyone else knows about? I haven't been able to find them and i have looked. Maybe you are right, also, that it takes a group of folkies to carry on a descent conversation. The Folk or not question is obviously important and very hot on this site with opinions that i love spending my time reading. and even Art's jokes are occasionally worth laughing at. There are many threads here i like to follow. But the agruement of what is folk or not does seem to get restrictive here (certainly not sterile) In my earlier reply, i wasn't meaning, of course, that "good song" and folk are the same. There are good songs in many genres. But I would probably get yelled at if i said that King of The Road was a folk song. It's a "good" song, I think and whenever i perform it with an audience young, old or in the boomer, i never have to ask the crowd to sing along. They always will. Seems very folky to me.
And when i am in Europe if I sing a Beatles song at a party, they all sing along. I'm on the fuzzy mathematics side. It's real hard for me to limit "Folk"
But i am not asking that The Mommas and The Pappas be discussed here. or the Beatles or Roger Miller. I just would like the opportunity to follow threads like the ones found here on other music subjects and i thought maybe you long timers would know if there were any other sites that compare.

or maybe you have to excuse a newbie
I just looked up King of The Road and it was in this data base.
And so i went on to explore another question i have had about your site. i.e. the discussions about new singer/songwriters being folk. I agree that many are navel gazers but i have been wondering about new "good" songs like for instance SEND ME TO GLORY IN A GLAD BAG by Don and Mim Carson and Steve Mason (folk from the Kansas City area) And it was in the data base. It appears that you all are more inclusive than first impressions led me to believe.
So maybe "The Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish" by the Hoosier Hot Shots isn't a folk song because almost nobody remembers it?

important point..the Database is administered by Dick Greenhaus, who puts what HE wants in it..(it just happens to be 'largely' folk)...the Mudcat forum is hosted by Max & his elves...Max is also kind enough to host the database...which used to live elsewhere.

Hi,

We do have a chat room on ICQ...ICQ#30225098. If you lurk in there.. someone might turn up to talk to you, (the bartender and @mudcat are only there for decoration so don't be offended if they don't talk to you.)

Unfortunately not many people seem to have been usiong the chat room......... it would be great if we could get a crowd in there.

no wonder you are glad it is here!! a gem surrounded by gravel.
I might give the chat room a try when i figure out ICQ. Maybe it will be worthwhile also. The few chat rooms i have investigated so far were so lame and disgusting as to be a complete watse of time.
why does it seem that everything must go to the lowest common denominator? Thank goodness for the cream that rises to the top.
A newbie says "Three Cheers for Dick, Max, and other elves (and you too, Bill)"

I seek a decent chatroom as well on ICQ One that would discuss folk/trad music as well as musicianship... How do I find the one you spoke of Alison? ( I am not Beeswing in ICQ, though)

Hi,

If you're already in ICQ simply click on Add users, (towards the bottom left of the little box which appears on your screen to tell you who is on line.).. and type in the number I gave above ICQ#30225098... this will get you something called @Mudcat... which is our chat room.

If you're not already in ICQ you will need to register (it is free!!)

ICQ

There are quite a few of us registered but due to different time zones we probably don't meet much... although I have talked to quite a few Mudcateers..... maybe we should post a time to meet........

There are grey shades in most everything. I think the DT gives you a good idea of the range of questions you can reasonably ask on the forum.

Certainly this isn't the place to ask a question about a song by Franz Lehar or Rogers and Hammerstein. But Western Swing seems within the bounds to me. The FSGW (Folklore Society of Greater Washington) Minifest last month had the Oklahoma Twisters playing for both their dance and their concert. And sometimes pop songs from the early part of this century come up. (I asked for "Dear Old Donegal" last year so I could sing it on St Patricks day. Got lots of info, too.)

I'm married to Bill D, which goes to show that the range of opinions in the Mudcat is very wide indeed and very tolerant of differences. I once sang Rocky Raccoon at an FSGW Open Sing, but I probably wouldn't want anyone to try to get the lyrics here. But you never know.... one might get yelled at, or one might start a really enjoyable thread. Or both.

Puzzled,

Re: who do you ask about "When I get that Jingle in my Jeans"
You could try here, start a thread and see what turns up.

As to whether it is folk or not. It isn't if nobody sings it. If it's a good song that you think should not be forgotten then sing it, tell us about it, and one day in the dim and distant future it may become a folk song.

Bert.

If you're interested in Musicals, there's a bit of a forum at http://www.musicals.net/. Cowpie is a good place for country lyrics, but they don't really have a discussion forum. I'll betcha most of us here would say that the Mudcat is the most appropriate place to discuss songs recorded by the Hoosier Hot Shots. Start a thread with the song title in the thread title, and see what comes up.
