Subject: RE: So, how big is a dram, anyway? From: GUEST Date: 09 May 06 - 01:15 AM Al, If you are asking about fluid measure, technically a DRAM equals 0.125 fluid ounces (US) or 0.13 fluid ounces (UK). In Scotland, a dram used to be a pub measure of spirits equal to a quarter of a gill or 1.25 fluid ounces (4 gills = 1 imperial pint of 20 fluid ounces. A pint (US) is 16 fluid ounces). Later it was a fifth of a gill, or 1 fluid ounce. It is probably equal to a SHOT in the US of a fluid ounce (US) of liquor. But, in layman's terms, "Not much!" But "Cheers" anyway! |

Subject: RE: So, how big is a dram, anyway? From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 May 06 - 03:02 AM There are two measures for whisky in the highlands, there's the 'pub measure' which is so small as to be virtually invisible, and there's the 'house measure' which is a proper drink. I always understood dram to be a corruption of the word drachm, this can be either a dry weight or a fluid measure. When I was at school our jotter, (a lined notebook in blue soft covers), had a lot of tables on the back outer cover. This included esoteric things like Troy weight and Drachms, along with Rods, Poles and Perches, which are linear measures. Mustn't forget furlongs, as horse races are still run over multiples of this measurement. Giok |

Subject: RE: So, how big is a dram, anyway? From: GUEST,The black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 09 May 06 - 04:51 PM I remember having to work out a conversion from drams to ounces when I was at school as I wanted to use an old formula from a 1910 Children's encyclodedia for Chemistry club. It was for a "weather glass", which consisted of a whole lot of chemicals disolved in water in a very large test tube. The article gave all sorts of details about what you would see in about twenty different types of weather conditions. It didn't work. |
