Wow! I think my heart is still pumping hard! Seeger and Guthrie when they were just young pups; Texas Gladden, Margo Mayo's square dance group (with Manny Weiner calling - thanks to the TradDanceCallers list for the id & the original link), and more...

To see it yourself (a 16-minute b/w film) click this: To Hear Your Banjo Play -- available streaming or to download, thanks to The AV Geeks Film Archive, "an ephemeral film collection curated by Skip Elsheimer," and The Internet Archive, "a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an 'Internet library,' with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format."

Yeah, it's a little staged, a period piece, but oh to see Pete grin from pure joy of playing for those dancers... it makes me a little teary-eyed. But then, I'm a little easy when it comes to that. :-)

~ Becky, in San Diego at Amos's, thanks to the wonder of the 'Cat

Lovely bit of film. The best quality is MPEG2 at half a gigabyte, but takes about 15 mins to download on fast broadband. I needed a free viewer to see it, but worth all the hassle.

That strange but effective 'Seeger' lick!, still great and today rarely used. For those who are wondering what I am talking about, Pete invented his own down/upicking method for playing the Banjo.

Also I think the Guitar picker in front of Woody G. is Brownie McGee?

Thanks for sharing.

Yes that's Brownie, with Sonny Terry playing the harp behind Pete.
