Hello,

I'm asking this on behalf of a "netless" friend who might be interested in learning to play bombarde. He's wondering if anyone knows of a good book of Brittany tunes for this instrument. Suggestions as to good makers would also be welcome. Can anyone help? Cheers, Sophie

There's a Breton piper's tune book printed by their association, BAS (I think it's Bodadeg Ar Sonerien). I've seen others as well.

If you want to enquire on behalf of your friend, there's a Breton shop for books, records, etc on line at http://www.arbedkeltiek.com

As far as bombarde makers is concerned, there was a reply containing three makers on soc.culture.breton not very long ago. I'm sure if you enquired, someone would post again for you.

One of the three that the person posting was recommending was from Auray, and he makes instruments for the Bagad there (that have been the Breton champions in recent years) and another good bagad in nearby Local-Mendon.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Ahh, bombarde! An honorable instrument. As I concentrate on fretless strings, the closest I have come to this feisty and economic powerhouse of an instrument is the sopranino recorder. I can only gush enthusiasm (and am) while recommending : ARION - Bretagne - Bombarde, ocarina, orgue - J. Baron - M. Ghesguiere ARN 64302 It would be in the lifeboat with one or two other discs. Really.
