Subject: RE: Chord Req: ewan maccoll 'legal-illegal' From: Barry Finn Date: 16 May 06 - 04:29 PM Hi Taylor I can't read, write or send music but if you'd like to send me a pm (see above search box of 'quick links' on how to pm someone - you need to be a guest though)with your phone number & I'll sing it into your message machine. No fear I've done this here more than a few times & other hear will tell you such. It's a song that I don't sing anymore but did & still love & would be more than happy to try again. Happy hunting & good luck Barry |

Subject: Chords Add: LEGAL ILLEGAL (Ewan MacColl) From: Charley Noble Date: 16 May 06 - 08:28 AM Taylor- Happy to comply! Here are the chords that I've worked up in the key of G (copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 to line up the chords): Legal-Illegal G------------D---------G It's illegal to rip off a payroll, ------C-------G----------D7 It's il-legal to hold up a train, --------C-----------G--C-G But it's legal to rip off a million or two, C--G---------------------D----G--D-----C That comes from the la-bour that other folk do, ---G--------C--G-----C--G--------D--G To plunder the many on behalf of the few, --C-G----C--G-C-G---D7-G Is a thing that is per-fect-ly legal. I would note that you can probably skip some of the quick chord changes in the last two lines, which rock back and forth rather quickly. But this should be a start. It's a lot easier to do these quick changes on an autoharp which is what I used to use. I used the same tune to a song of mine entitled "The Lord of the Mobile Home Manor" which you should be able to find somewhere in the Mudcat threads by searching for "mobile home manor". Yours in struggle, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: ewan maccoll 'legal-illegal' From: GUEST Date: 16 May 06 - 02:03 AM Charley Noble, My name's Taylor. I'm 17 and I live about a half hour outside Seattle. I got the song from a giant 'Broadside' compilation I got from the library. It's one of my top three favorites of all five discs. I don't really dig it for being though-provoking as I'm already a raging leftist, but I like political music I agree with. I like how the lyrics don't just go out and say "this is bad!" but rather say "this is 'good', this is 'bad'...what the fuck?" It's also a catchy tune. And unlike most political songs, it seems more likely to be able to change someone's mind on something (or at least get them thinking). Most politically-oriented songs have little potential to be taken seriously by the other side. I would greatly appreciate you working it out for me. I have a really shitty ear. If you don't want to go through the trouble I'd still be happy if you'd just give me the first few chords and let me try to work it out on my own or whatever. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: ewan maccoll 'legal-illegal' From: Charley Noble Date: 15 May 06 - 07:58 PM Goodbar- It is a tricky tune but lots of fun. I'll be happy to work out the chords but only if you have the courtesy to introduce yourself and say something about your interest in the song. Sorry if this sounds grouchy but I'm doing this kind of service as a volunteer, not because someone I don't know demands it. Charley Noble |
