Is there any way to import a CD into iTunes and actually have it create its own "album"?

I'm probably doing it all wrong, but on my Mac I drag the image of the CD in iTunes onto the word Library, and iTunes then imports all the tracks.

Then I have to create a folder with the album name and drag all the tracks into it.

It would obviously be much handier if I didn't have to create a folder, but the system did it. Can it?

On my version (Windoze) when I put a CD in the CD Drive iTunes automatically identifies the tracks (if connected to internet) and asks if I want to import the CD. If I click on the "Import" button it then converts the tracks to whichever format I have set as default and lists it in the music library by artist, genre (and other stuff?).
You may need to change some settings - try looking at the help files and the preferences menu?

JIT, I can't understand why you have to drag it into "word library" What exactly do you mean by " create it's own album"?

I use an imac running OSx 10.4, so things may be a little different for you. But here is how i do it.
1. Insert CD which will then open itunes by default.
2. Click on "import CD" in left hand corner. This will then copy all the tracks into the itunes library
3. Create a new playlist (album title)
4. Drag and drop all tracks into the folder

Itunes will only identify the tracks if they are already stored in the gracenotes system. For most big nme releases this is fine, but for lesser known titles you will have to physically input track names, artists, album titles, etc

I inported albums by Pig's Ear and Adrian Nation, two local artists and hey presto! It did the trick added all the track titles - I'm impressed!

OK, here's a question. If you import a CD that hasn't been catalogued on Gracenotes, do you have to type artist and CD title separately for each of the individual tracks, or is there a way to do it once and copy it for all the track?

Ah, there I go. I just found the "Multiple Song Information box" which does what I was looking for.

Yes, that's the thing I'm talking about, *playlists*. I just wonder if there's a pref somewhere that allows me to set it as default to treat all albums as playlists.

Ideally, you'd have one list for your own playlists - Housework, Sleepytime, Wallpaper-music and so on - and the other for albums.

Why would you want a playlist for a single album? When you click on the Library, there's a window to choose an Album. Just choose it there. Why would you want hundreds of playlists that duplicate functionality that already exists?

If your music browser doesn't show when you are in Library, hit Ctrl-B. Then you can choose music by Genre, Artist, or Album.

You can only use Playlists if you want to use the Burn Album yokie, for a start.

So if you want a cheap burned copy for your car, rather than putting your valuable CDs in there...

Oh and another use for Playlists - you can *limit* what's played to the album you want to play.

For instance, I have a couple of snoozes stored from Pzizz
. The next thing is a nice loud album, Siberie by Manu Chao. I really don't want to leap awake as one segues into the other!

You can limit what is played to the album you want to play just by selecting that album in the Album pane (should be available when you're in the Library). When iTunes runs out of songs on that album it stops.

Similarly you can select songs from a particular artist by clicking the artist in the Artist pane, and all his or her songs and albums are listed in the different panes.

Further, you can select a single (or even multiple) Genre/s in the Genre pane, pick a few of the several artists of that genre that appear in the Artist pane, and then select, perhaps, only 1 or 2 of each artist's albums to play. The result is listed in the song list. And even then you can still avoid the few songs you don't like by unchecking the relevant song title. All without playlists. (On the Mac you select more than one line in a pane by clicking on them while holding down the CMD key, the one with the Apple/Pretzel. Windows will have a similar thing).

To do all this you have to make sure that all the relevant panes are open in the first place, ie the Genre, Artist and Album panes. If you don't have them open, make sure you're in the general Library and then click on the Browse eye in the top right of iTunes.

If you have several songs and want to write in Artist, Album, Date, Genre etc info common to all of them at the same time, on the Mac anyway you select all the songs you want (CMD-click each one) and then press CMD-I (or from the menu, FILE> GET INFO) and a box comes up with various entry fields.
