Subject: Tin Pan Alley From: Steve Latimer Date: 16 Feb 99 - 10:16 AM I've had trouble posting lately, don't know if it's at this end or your end. Anyway, I've often heard the term "Tin Pan Alley" and to be frank I'm not sure of how and where this originated and what it means. Please help. Steve |
Subject: RE: Tin Pan Alley From: Date: 16 Feb 99 - 01:25 PM Steve, Tin-Pan Alley was the name for the music publishing biz in NYC at the turn of the century. They were the first to take ragtime and set it on paper. That moved on to other things (styles I mean) and by the 1920's NYC was the undisputed musical center for anyone who wanted to be someone. (Music type) I don't know where the name came from, whether it was a conglomeration of businesses, one powerful guy, or what. Hope that sheds light for you. My good books on that subject are still in storage somewhere... Liza |
Subject: RE: Tin Pan Alley From: Don Ferguson Date: 17 Feb 99 - 10:05 AM Click on my website at http://www.bright.net/~mrbanjo/ Click on What was Tin Pan Alley. It will take you to a website that has a good discussion. Also click on Song Files for midi's and lyric pages with chords for music produced during the Tin Pan Alley era.
