I would very much appreciate some advice on the best quality and guage of strings for Appalachian banjo. Also could someone remind me of the charity that requires used strings. Thanks.

It depends on the banjo , folkwaller . Are you on the UK side of the pond ?

For light frailing banjo - e.g. Deering Goodtime - I suggest gauges around 9, 11, 14, 20w, 9. Nickel wound for 4th string lasts better than bronze.

I am on the UK side of the pond. Does it show? A long arm mongrel!

I would repeat my answer to a similar query recently for a UK banjo player - Get on to Doug Parry at John Alvey Turner in Ware - He does mail order and knows his banjos !
