Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jollity Farm (Leslie Sarony) From: Ross Campbell Date: 13 May 11 - 10:47 PM The Neil Innes attribution in Joe Offer's post above arises from the success of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band in the late sixties, and the subsequent swamping of internet lyric sites with the Neil Innes association. Though there was much original material from Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall in the band's repertoire, they also drew on comic music-hall songs from a previous generation of entertainers. Subject: RE: Jollity farm - dots? From: Artful Codger Date: 19 Jun 09 - 08:22 PM "Misery Farm" was written in 1929 by Jay Wallis. I haven't found bibliographic info on him, but the National Library of Australia has a copy of his sheet music for "Misery Farm" dated 1929, published in Melbourne (sadly, no online scan). The song was recorded by Leslie Sarony prior to his writing and recording "Jollity Farm", also in 1929. YouTube has a 78 sound clip of Tommy Handley singing "Misery Farm"; on very cursory hearing, his lyrics seem a bit different from those posted by Snuffy, at least in the first verse. YouTube also has several clips of "Jollity Farm" from 1929 78's (by Hal Payne, Billy Haymes and Jack Swain). I'm polishing up some additional lyrics for "Jollity Farm" which I might post here. |
Subject: RE: Jollity farm - dots? From: Joybell Date: 31 May 06 - 08:50 PM Thanks, Snuffy. Yes "feelin' crook" does sound like us doesn't it. Snuffy I so wish you could have seen our last play. I had Robin Hood and Little John break into a Morris dance in the middle of their encounter on the plank. Hats and bells supplied by a beautiful Merry Lady. Music by True-love. They were so good. Cheers, Joy |
Subject: RE: Jollity farm - dots? From: Snuffy Date: 31 May 06 - 07:45 PM That seems to be the Current 93 version, Joy. Here are John Williamson's: does the line Mother can't cook 'cause she's feelin' crook indicate an Antipodean interpolation? We've got a farm, a barn of a farm Right in the middle of a swamp Now there ain't any charm in our little farm Right in the middle of a swamp All the hens won't lay, we can't make hay We work all day and we get no pay We're all miserable, all so miserable Down on Misery Farm So are the animals, so are the vegetables Down on Misery Farm Oh there's pigs and sheep all fast asleep Right in the middle of our room Mother can't cook 'cause she's feelin' crook And the straw's warn out on her broom All the hens won't lay, we can't make hay We work all day and we get no pay We're all miserable, all so miserable Down on Misery Farm So are the animals, so are the vegetables Down on Misery Farm |

From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 31 May 06 - 07:08 PM You can hear the Jack Hylton Band do the song (Real Audio) with Leslie Sarony doing the vocals on this page: Jack Hylton Music Downloads (about 40% down page). If I had time I'd transcribe the tune for you, but I'm a bit busy at the moment. Mick |
Subject: Lyris add Misery Farm From: Joybell Date: 31 May 06 - 06:44 PM Funny we've been looking both of these songs up just this week. The net seems to be swamped by these words for "Misery Farm". Can't find anything else about it though and I don't know if it's the old version. None of the sites I found it on gave credits. A friend tells me his father (in his 80s) has known it a long time here in Aus. Misery Farm We've got a farm, a barn of a farm Right in the middle of a swamp There ain't any charm in our little farm Right in the middle of the swamp Now nothing's grown since the day we came Misery Farm is our farm's name! We're all miserable, so miserable Down on Misery Farm So are the animals, so are the vegetables Down on Misery Farm The hens won't lay, we can't make hay We work all day, we get no pay! We're all miserable, so miserable Down on Misery Farm Now we've got a cart, with part of the cart Stuck in the middle of the swamp The old grey mare, she looks at it there Stuck in the middle of the swamp We'll be digging it out next May Patching it up for Darby day! We're miserable, so miserable Down on Misery Farm So are the animals, so are the vegetables Down on Misery Farm The hens won't lay, We can't make hay We work all day and we get no pay! We're miserable, so miserable Down on Misery Farm We're miserable, so miserable Down on Misery Farm So are the animals, so are the vegetables Down on Misery Farm The hens won't lay, we can't make hay We work all day, we get no pay! We're miserable, so miserable Down on Misery Farm. Cheers, Joy |
Subject: RE: Jollity farm - dots? From: Helen Date: 31 May 06 - 05:10 PM I've seen a video clip on Oz tv of Mick conway (of Captain Matchbox fame) singing Jollity Farm, in a farmyard setting. Aimed at kids, but still a little of that miscievous Conway weirdness. Helen |
Subject: Lyr Req: Misery Farm From: Snuffy Date: 31 May 06 - 04:47 PM The song was apparently a "follow-on" from the surreally humorous Misery Farm recorded in the 30s by the likes of Al Bowlly. However, a web search fails to reveal the full lyrics. There are recordings by a John Williamson who would appear to be Australian, and by a group called Current 93. Neither of these sets of lyrics contain the verse with the epic lines: The sun went down behind yon hillDoes anyone have the full/original words, please |

Newman Production Company De Forest Phonofilms Cast: Leslie Sarony Show full cast and credits "A brace of humorous songs performed by Leslie Sarony. Show full synopsis Leslie Sarony, the famed performer and songwriter - whose 'Jollity Farm' was memorably covered by the Bonzo Dog Band - sings these two songs in the style of an on-stage performance, direct to camera, before a backdrop depicting the exterior of a public house. In both cases the performance of the song includes the traditional sing-along chorus during which Sarony exhorts an imaginary audience to join in.
