Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: The Barden of England Date: 04 Jun 06 - 04:59 PM The guys at 'The Cove House Inn' right by the beach it Chiswell (Portland end of Chesil Beach) made me very welcome there about 3 Thursdays ago. Nice bunch of people so give that a try. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Jun 06 - 05:21 PM Alas it has been some time since I went to a folk club in Dorchester or nearby but I can recommend a visit to Dorchester - you'll be able to see the site of William Barnes' school there, and his rectory nearby at Came (he wrote 'Linden Lea' amongst other things). The museum is fascinating, full of lots of folky things, fossils, Thomas Hardy stuff and the Dorset Ooser. Maiden Castle is good for a long walk and Maumbury Rings for a short walk. Cerne Abbas is nearby with the giant chalk figure and at least one good pub in the village (The New Inn) or you could take a trip to Abbotsbury and see Prince, the former Wandsworth Brewery dray horse in his paddock at the bottom of the Swan Inn carpark. Have a good time... LTS - former resident of Dorchester. |

Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: Essex Girl Date: 05 Jun 06 - 09:43 AM Go to the Square & Compasses Worth Matravers. Not a club or session as such but they have all sorts of music there and the pub is well worth a visit for the museum, stone carvings and great range of ciders. |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: GUEST Date: 05 Jun 06 - 10:59 AM I first read this as "Going on holiday to Detroit." We'd be delighted to have ya, but I guess you're not coming. Pity. |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: Herga Kitty Date: 05 Jun 06 - 04:04 PM The Dorchester club (Royal Wessex Hotel) is 3rd Wednesday, so not next week. You could try the Blue Boar in Poole instead. The Thursday night Wimborne club has moved to the Horns, I think. But there's Wessex Acoustic on Saturday night at the Mount in Corfe Mullen. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: The Shambles Date: 06 Jun 06 - 06:07 AM The guys at 'The Cove House Inn' right by the beach it Chiswell (Portland end of Chesil Beach) made me very welcome there about 3 Thursdays ago. Nice bunch of people so give that a try. That was very nice of you John but you were well-behaved too and did not eat too many of the sandwiches......(Smiles) In addition to the regular Thursday night tune session - this Sunday afternoon (11th June 2006) - The Cove House Inn will be holding a sea food festival outside. This is a repeat of the first one held last year where an open mic is provided from miday and a general session held from about 5pm. You will be welcome to join in with these or just sit, drink, eat and listen in the sun. |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: The Barden of England Date: 06 Jun 06 - 08:49 AM I'd already eaten Roger, but the sandwiches as an extra were very nice too :-) I was going to have one of the crab dinners there, but I don't think I could have done justice to the enormous one that appeared in the table next to me. I looked fabulous - but then again the food there is! Once again, thanks for the welcome, it was much appreciated. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Jun 06 - 05:38 PM "I looked fabulous" Shame, I'd've liked to have seen that.... : ) LTS |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: The Shambles Date: 07 Jun 06 - 02:45 AM I can confirm that he did look fabulous. Good enough to eat in fact. Although I would like to record that the natives have given up eating vistors and that you would be quite safe....... |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: The Barden of England Date: 07 Jun 06 - 03:49 AM Oh dear - the dangerous digit syndrome. Glad I don't work for an Investment Bank! I did of course mean It looked fabulous. Describing myself as looking fabulous would be a flagrant breach of Trading Standards!!! Next time I'm down I'm going to wrestle with one of those magnificent crustaceans; to my mind much better than a lobster. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Jun 06 - 07:12 AM Ah Shambles..... you haven't been to Puncknowle* for a while have you..... LTS *pronounced Punnul |
Subject: RE: Going on holiday to Dorset From: The Shambles Date: 07 Jun 06 - 07:55 AM I had reason to visit Puncknowle only recently. We were going to board our aging dog there. We took him there for a night's trial run and although he wasn't eaten by the natives - he made such a fuss and kept everyone awake so that they gave up and brought him home early. |
