Subject: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: SqueezeMe Date: 05 Jun 06 - 02:28 AM Anyone know of the UK group from a few years back, Galley? Who was in it? Half recognise the voices.... Saw a passing mention in another thread, and a Guest, Paul Bellamy saying he was a member of the group, but can find no further info, here or on Google. Ring any bells? Just listening to a great album from them, Hail Smiling Morn.... MC |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: Mr Sooz Date: 05 Jun 06 - 02:50 AM Residents at Grimsby Folk Club in the 70's. One of them, Graham Thomas, is a regular visitor to Gainsborough Folk Club. |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: GUEST,Ruston Hornsby Date: 05 Jun 06 - 04:24 AM Wasn't Paul Bellamy's sister Linda in the group as well? I have faint memories of them re-formed for the night for a Grimsby Folk Club anniversary do about 15 years ago. The cut an LP, I seem to recall. |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: SqueezeMe Date: 05 Jun 06 - 10:12 AM I'm told the recording was originally entitled "Hail Smiling Morn", (on cassette?), then released on vinyl on the Stoof label, renamed "Joke and Push About the Pitcher". Great album, hence my enquiry, as I'd never previously heard (of) them. MC |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: GUEST,Who Who Date: 06 Jun 06 - 09:43 AM Happy memories! Wasn't Paul Bellamy in Broadside? |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: Sooz Date: 06 Jun 06 - 12:54 PM Don't think he ever was - Broadside was John Conolly, Bill Meek, Brian Dawson, Tommy Smith and Mike Lee. Paul is now part of an excellent duo with Mark Campbell. |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: gnomad Date: 06 Jun 06 - 01:05 PM I think he helped out sometimes. Paul is certainly credited on the sleeve notes as playing fiddle on Towersey Fair, but that is just one Broadside track out of about 20 in my posession. He is also credited (fiddle and vocals) on 5 Rational Anthem tracks. |
Subject: RE: Info reqd: UK folk group Galley From: GUEST,Graham Thomas Date: 06 Jun 06 - 03:28 PM The Galley consisted of Frank Singleton, Paul Bellamey his sister Lynn and myself. We were first recorded on the Grimsby Folk Club LP "Eastern Approaches" in 1973 our own LP "Hail Smiling Morn" was released in 1975. We subsequently sold world rights excluding the UK to the Dutch "Stoof Label". Paul played fiddle with the Broadside Ceilidh Band and also on occasion with the Song group. I was caller with the Band for 12-13 years. If anyone has any other queries etc. please contact me @ granjo@btinternet.com and I will try to help. And if you need a caller I'm still available. It's nice to be remembered, Graham |
