Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: jacqui.c Date: 16 Jun 06 - 09:02 AM We got back home last night at just before midnight after experiiencing the delights of the Airport From Hell AKA Newark. After an eight hour flight across the Pond (with the best attention from the cabin crew) we got all our bags through customs, only to be told by an airport employee that to re-check the bags we had to get them across to Terminal C - on the Airtrain. Withn three large bags and three cabin bags this was not the easiest of tasks and when we got the C it was not clear where to take the bags. This was when we came up against two separate airport staff who thought that Portland Maine meant we neede an international flight! We finally found the right floor, had the bags re-checked in but told we would have to take them to the other end of that floor for x-ray in area one. There was no area one and that is where I lost it a bit with the Continental staff and insisted that someone actually took us to the correct area. Turned out it USED to be area one but was now area two! We settled at the gate to await the plane, having got something to sit and eat at the gate instead of eating at our leisure at one of the restaurants. Just getting into the food when a gate change was announced - right the other end of the floor! We got down there, it was noisy and crowded but we got on the plane on time - and then sat there for about forty minutes with no explanation as to why we weren't moving. Kendall, at that point commented that "next time we go to England we'll drive" which raised a laugh from other passengers near us. The only saving grace was that all our bags actually got to Portland as well and Mary was there to meet and take us home. I turned the light off at 1.00am and woke up, as did Kendall, at 6.00am - still on UK time. Whatever the problem with travel we had a great time and thanks go out to all those who gave us a bed or a meal or just the pleasure of their company for a few hours. There are so many lovely friends that we want to keep in touch with but just can't manage to visit in the time we have. Still, there will be other visits in the future although I think it will be a while before Kendall comes over again - he misses his home comforts to much! |

Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: jacqui.c Date: 15 Jun 06 - 06:37 AM We're off back to Maine in a few hours, bags all packed ready. We had a great time at the Hertford Club last night with all the regulars and with Moses and Singing Referee also in attendance. There was some great music and a wonderful energy in the room and it was worth the journey from and to Shepperton to be there. A real high point to finish our visit. I think that London is one hell of a culture shock for Kendall - I find it all a bit much now and I'm London born and bred. For myself, I wouldn't move back into London now and have felt that way for a number of years. However, it will not stop me making forays into the Smoke to visit my friends. Come out to Maine and you can see what Kendall means though. |

Liz, my dear, I can understand why your man won't move to a strangs location, it has been said that man can adjust to anything but a stone in his shoe. 'Course, even that has a use...it's a good birth control method...it makes you limp. |

Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Jun 06 - 07:46 PM Maine does have its countryside and poo smells for a fact and if that is preferable to Kendall, than he's in the right place! Ever seen a Maine barn being cleaned out in the Springtime? I did. Up until that point the phrase "asshole deep" had no real meaning to me but after seeing that.......................Simply unbelievable (much like Kendall). Spaw |

Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: kendall Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:48 AM My opinion of east London has nothing to do with my opinion of England, or the people who live there. I still love the UK and all the good friends I have here.Living in ANY big city is an un natural act, but I won't judge you for that. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Liz the Squeak Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:28 AM So Kendall.... you going to dontate the air fares so we in east London can come and complain that Maine is too cold?! : ) LTS |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: kendall Date: 14 Jun 06 - 08:59 AM I was never sure of the meaning of "Cluster fuck" until I saw east London. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: jacqui.c Date: 14 Jun 06 - 07:30 AM Getting into East London would have been a breeze if I had taken my usual route but Kendall wanted to go see Marx's tomb and have a photo taken for a Republican friend's benefit and that was where the trouble started. Kendall has not been a great fan of the undeground on previous occasions so I thought that road might be better. Very few street signs easily visible and too much traffic to be able to slow down and look without causing major problems. We gave up in the end and I reckoned that the easiest way through to Plaistow was A1 into the City and then out on the A13. Hold up at the Angel, due to too much raffic, then I managed to get us onto the A12 and had to go out and around the North Circ, where there were more holdups due to road works! Anyway, to add insult to injury, the guy came to fit the windscreen yesterday and, just as he had taken the wipers off preparatory to popping the screen, the heavens opened! So we still have a cracked screen, which the guy says is safe enough for driving, and my son has to reschedule for when we leave tomorrow. We were going to Duxford today but Kendall has decided that he isn't really up for that. I, at least, will be in Hertford tonight and will hopefully have Kendall with me, after a lazy day in Shepperton. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: karen k Date: 13 Jun 06 - 07:31 PM I remember my first trip to England and Scotland in 1989. It was in May and there was an unbelievable heatwave going on. It was in the mid to high 90's the entire 3 weeks. I was absolutely miserable. No AC and few fans. It was just awful. Jacqui and Kendall it was like Old Songs last year the whole time. Miserable. Also, my last trip in 2004 I went into London with Noreen and Stewart and their 3 oldest children. We drove most of the way and then took the Tube. Noreen and I went to the Cecil Sharp House and Stewart and the kids went off to do some sightseeing. We met back at the car at the end of the day and drove home. It was so easy. I recommend it in the future. We'll be glad to get you back in the US and will see you at Old Songs in a week and a half. Hi, Noreen. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Lanfranc Date: 13 Jun 06 - 06:49 PM Sorry we missed you Sunday - the hot weather doesn't agree with me, either! Hope to see you tomorrow at the Hertford Club. Alan |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: My guru always said Date: 13 Jun 06 - 05:48 PM Well, they've set off safely for their temporary home after their visit with us in Surrey. A lovely evening, so glad they could spare some of their time here, but they must both be pretty shattered after 3 weeks of travelling all over the place. Good to spend time with them, safe journeys both!! |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Essex Girl Date: 13 Jun 06 - 09:19 AM Wise man kendall!! I won't drive into central London unless there is no alternative. Public transport is good for the most part and as I have to work there all week I prefer to head out into the country at weekends |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Noreen Date: 13 Jun 06 - 09:01 AM I agree, Kendall- I park in the suburbs and go in on the Tube. Much easier. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 13 Jun 06 - 07:16 AM You can see more than a spitfire at Duxsford. There is a large USAF museum there, and a memorial with a representation of every lost US aircraft in WW2 |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: kendall Date: 13 Jun 06 - 06:05 AM Let me modify my statement, I will not ever go into London by car again. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: jacqui.c Date: 13 Jun 06 - 05:16 AM We got RAIN last night! (I knew that leaving the washing out to dry would do it!) Right now it is cool and very pleasant here although how long that continues is another thing. Ah well, enjoy it while it's here. The windscreen should be fixed this afternoon so that will be out the way before we drive to Duxford tomorrow to see a Spitfire. This afternoon I will be starting to show my step-granddaughter how to crochet - picked up yarn and a book in the local charity shop today. I also got some lovely mohair yarn that might just become an auction shawl in due course. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: SINSULL Date: 12 Jun 06 - 06:23 PM And Kendall won't drive in the vicinity of Boston, NYC, New Haven, etc. That's how he and I became such good friends. I do the city driving. Puppy went tht dog park today. We can't win. The first sunny day in weeks and it was too damn hot for him or any of the other dogs to run. Still, he enjoyed the outing. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Becca72 Date: 12 Jun 06 - 04:36 PM Midchuck...we don't go through Boston, we go AROUND it to get anywhere. |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: My guru always said Date: 12 Jun 06 - 02:50 PM Surrey is quite nice (though we do have some idiot drivers) as you will see tomorrow - Safe journey!!! |
Subject: RE: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY From: Midchuck Date: 12 Jun 06 - 01:30 PM Kendall, I'd think that, since you have to go through the greater Boston area to get to or from Maine from or to anywhere else in the Country, you'd be used to idiot drivers. Peter |
