so i've stumbled upon this place...i'm liking it so far...

i'll like it even better if any of you lovelies know about any festvals going on around me (somewheres near washington state) during the last week of july and/or anytime in august? i am willing to travel through (up to) approximately three states, if that makes any difference. i guess mostly i want to find a newport that's not sponsored by dunkin' donuts and is in rhode island and costs two hundred dollars.... picking up what i'm puttin down? oh, and i don't have toooo much money, so if it's some big camp-thingy like lark camp, that's a nix, at least for this year.

just thought if i'd ask those that have frequented such events for many more moons than i for suggestions i'd get a leg up...right? thx so much, guys! :)

I don't know if she's still alive, but Faith Petric is a great folk singer/songwriter on the west coast. She is referred to as the Lil Appel of the West Coast. She might know of festivals in Washington area. Also try your question with Sing Out magazine. Another source person, although on the east coast, is Mike Agranoff who seems to know about festivals everywhere. Try Mike@MikeAgranoff.com

There's a guide to Northwest Festivals:

FESTIVALS NW
"Festivals NW" Directory
128pg, 1375 event Quarterly
$30/yr; 4 issues to include CD summary reviews for those playing
NW festivals/fairs.

festivalsnw@wolfenet.com

The Victory Music Review publishes a monthly list of festivals in the Northwest in each monthly issue for that month. The latest one is in the June Issue. But you'd have to wait until the July or August issue to get the info you want.

If you want to stay around a few days after the end of August, there's a great festival in the Tri-Cities (Pasco) area of Washington on Labor Day Weekend - it's one of the best - Tumbleweed Music Festival.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Faith Petric is definately alive and well
and leading the San Francisco Folk Club
in a royal manner.

The best source of festival info is in these magazines.

Sing out!
Dirty Linen
No Depression

The best fest i know of is Strawberry, but it has been
sold out for manymonths. It occurs each memorial and labor day
(end of may, end of august)

at the end of June there is Kate Wolf fest, near Laytonville, Ca,
in mid july there is calif. world fest in Grass Valley, CA
in mid july is the Oregon Country faire which is SOOO much more than
a festival, more like a happening.

are you looking for a specific type of festival?
i have heard about one in oregon called hornings hide a way ..

and somewhere there is the rainbow gathering...
i do not know where this years one will be...

in Quincy Ca around the fourth of july is the High Sierra fest,

and speaking fo newport, ther is a small folk fest
just inland from newport oregon on the first weekend of aug.

so the answer is yes...

Tri-Cities is the Tumbleweed Fest held in Howard Ammon Park in Richland. You just missed the deadline for applying to perform.

You can find out more by checking out the webpage for Tri-Cities Folk Society.

There is also some kind of small fest in Wilbur in late July. Wilbur is 65 miles west of Spokane.

Spokane has a fest sometime in November, 2 days. Check out the webpage for Palouse Folk Society.

Ocean Shores near Aberdeen has its first festival in late July I believe...it sounds like a good lineup. If I find it on Google I will post it. Of Course, there is the Vancouver Folk Festival in B.C. and there are some good local ones on Vancouver Isalnd although perhaps later in summer. mg

Oops..late september...Tom May, Tom Paxton and Hank Cramer will be there. You could stick around for Sunnycamp not too far away (2 hours) probably the next weekend. mg
