Subject: Need help ID-ing country song From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 13 Jun 06 - 12:51 AM Heard it once on the radio and not in it's entirety, so it's driving me crazy trying to find out what the song is. The basic idea in the song: A man is watching/observing a woman dancing with her love....sorta sounded like it was a father watching his daughter dance at her wedding...but then there was something in the lyrics that made me think it was a former boyfriend watching his old love dance with her new love (perhaps at their wedding???) It's a slow, pretty melody...sung by a male. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks. Mary |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST,J C Date: 13 Jun 06 - 04:16 AM Sounds vaguely like Poison in a Glass of Wine aka Oxford City He saw her dancing with another Which made jealousy run in his mind So for to destroy his own true lover He gave her some poison in a glass of wine Let me know if it's this and I'll post it. Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: BTMP Date: 13 Jun 06 - 03:49 PM How about "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight". Although the usual situation for this song is a woman observing her former boyfriend getting married ... just wondering. -btmp |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 13 Jun 06 - 11:38 PM LOL re Philadelphia lawyer. "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" so far sounds like the best match. Does anyone know if there are any recordings of it that are not the bluegrass style? Many thanks for the feedback! Mary |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: Snuffy Date: 14 Jun 06 - 08:39 AM The Watersons are not bluegrass |
Subject: Lyr Add: I'LL BE ALL SMILES TONIGHT From: BTMP Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:29 AM Mary - I have a nice version of "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" by the Louvin Brothers. I'm sure there are more recordings by Country artists - I haven't heard many Bluegrass singers perform the tune. Here are the lyrics: I'll Be All Smiles Tonight I'll deck my brow with roses the loved ones may be there And gems that others gave me will shine within my hair And even those who know me will think my heart is light Though my heart may break tomorrow, I'll be all smiles tonight Chorus: I'll be all smiles tonight, Love, I'll be all smiles tonight Though my heart may break tomorrow, I'll be all smiles tonight Oh when the dance commences, Oh how I will rejoice I'll sing the songs he taught me without a faltering voice When the flattering ones come around me they'll think my heart is light Though my heart may break tomorrow, I'll be all smiles tonight Chorus And when the room he entered with a bride upon his arm I stood and gazed upon him as though he was a charm And then he smiled upon her as once he'd smiled on me They knew not what I suffered, they found no change in me Chorus And when the dance is over and all have gone to rest I'll think of him, dear Mother, the one that I love best He once did love me dearly and ne'er from me would part He sought not to deceive me, false friends have changed his heart Chorus |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:37 AM Was it commercial country or true country? Or a modern tune in the traditional style? Could it have been Didn't I Dance in My Day? |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: Peace Date: 14 Jun 06 - 09:40 AM "Didn't I Dance" is in the DT, FYI. |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST,Randy old northerner Date: 14 Jun 06 - 11:48 AM I bet it was the Tennesee waltz. |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 16 Jun 06 - 09:23 AM Definitely not Tennesee Waltz, that's in my repertoire... I'll have to check the DT for Didn't I Dance. Yesterday I heard a new song--definitely a Father/Daughter song (cause it is spelled out in the lyrics) but it isn't the one I am looking for....It's a good one though. I Loved Her First by Heartland I was listening to snippets of I'll be All Smiles Tonight, and they seemed rather "twangy" (I used the term bluegrass since that was the category the recordings seemed to fall under)--whatever song I heard didn't have the "twang" to it....more ballady sounding, could be a cross over on the music charts. If any of that makes sense. LOL Thanks for all the feedback! Mary |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST,guest Date: 16 Jun 06 - 05:10 PM Could it have been The Tennessee Waltz? "I was dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz when an old friend she happened to see..."? Michele |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: Ferrara Date: 16 Jun 06 - 08:05 PM There was a pop song called "I'll Dance at Your Wedding," or "I Danced at Your Wedding." I can't find it on line. It had these lines, which are all I remember right now: I danced at your wedding, although I was dreading The thought of losing you, ... Your mother was crying, your father was crying, And I was crying too, Our poor hearts were aching Because we were losing you. But ... I don't think of it as a country song. |
Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: scouse Date: 17 Jun 06 - 12:06 PM Perhaps it was... I loved a lass, I loved her so well, I hated all others who spoke of her ill, But now she's rewarded me well for her love, For she's gone to be wed to another... I saw my Love, sit down to dine, I sat down beside her and poured out her wine, And I prayed to the love..... For she's gone to be wed to to another Forgotten the rest.... As Aye, Phil.. |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: Snuffy Date: 19 Jun 06 - 09:01 AM Rita, I don't remember "I Danced at Your Wedding." as a pop song, but I do remember hearing Spike Jones and his City Slickers doing a hilarious demolition job on it!! |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 21 Jun 06 - 09:31 AM Thanks for the loftoncreek.com link. I posted the lyrics for I Loved Her First earlier in this thread....it might be the song, though when I was listening to whatever song I am looking for, I don't recall hearing the word "father" mentioned in the lyrics, which made me think it might be another tune. So far, "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" seems the next most likely song. Lots of great old songs mentioned! "I Went to Your Wedding" written by J.M. Robinson was recorded by Patti Page. It's on her Greatest Hits cd. It's a song I like very much. Thanks everyone for the feedback!! Mary |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: Genie Date: 23 Jun 06 - 12:08 PM Art, is "Waltzing With Bears" the one where Papa Bear watches wistfully as Goldilocks dances with her new love, Baby Bear? Guest Michele - Just to slow down the 'folk process' a wee bit, the first line of Tennessee Waltz is: "I was dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz when an old friend I (not "she") happened to see... ."? Little Robyn, I like your family's joke song! Genie |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST Date: 23 Jun 06 - 05:10 PM The song "i loved her first" by Heartland, is definitely about a father watching his daughter and her new husband. you can tell with these lyrics: How could that beautiful women with you -->(his daughter) Be the same freckle face kid that I knew-->(once again, his daughter) The one that I read all those fairy tales to-->(read to her as a child) and tucked into bed all those nights --> (once again, as a child) you can also tell in the chorus by the words and it says father: But I Loved her first and I held her first (loved her before this man, held her when she was a baby) and a place in my heart I'll always be hers From the first breath she breathed (when she was born) When she first smiled at me (when she was born) I knew the love of a father runs deep (FATHER... obvious meaning) and I prayed that she'd find you someday but it still hard to give her away (last two lines: father always wants his daughter to find a good man to spend the rest of her life with, but its hard to give her away after so long) I loved her first |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST Date: 30 Jun 06 - 01:54 AM I just saw where my daughter had written in previously and I did not see that before (I was just looking up feedback about his songs.) Walt (of course), wrote the song about our two daughters that are 18 and 22 and the prospect of "losing" them to some young man soon. If you think YOU guys get choked up listening to it, you ought to try to sit in the audience and be me and know it is about our daughters!! :) Thanks again for loving the song and spread the word to request it all over the country. It is a previously unknown group on a small record label, so your calls really will make a difference!! Ann Aldridge |

Subject: RE: Need help ID-ing country song From: GUEST,Amanda Date: 18 Jul 06 - 11:32 PM I love this song, "I loved her First". I heard just the end of it on the radio a few weeks ago, and thought "It would be perfect for me to dance with my dad at my wedding in a few weeks!" I had been waiting to choose a song for the father/daughter dance because I just didn't like many of the other's out there. This song came out in perfect time for my wedding, and I am sure there will not be a dry eye at the reception when everyone listens to the lyrics!! Thanks Heartland!! |
