Subject: Need Help with Title for a new Album
From: Snoozer

I'm working on an album with a friend (he's the artist, I'm engineering) and we are nearly done, but are having a hard time coming up with a title for the album.

The songs on the album are all taken from the book "The Drifters" by James Michener. The book (written in 1971) is the story of six young adults who each are escaping some political or personal turmoil in 1960's America, and who end up traveling together to Europe and Africa, each in search of some meaning or ideology in their lifes. One of the characters is Gretchen, from Boston, MA, who is a folk singer. The songs she sings are all Child Ballads, 14 are mentioned in the book along with two other songs (Eriskay Love Lilt and Greenland Whale Fisheries). The album is made up of those 16 songs. The songs are all recorded with just voice and guitar and the occassional mandolin, harmonica, vocal harmony, etc to give it a "kind of" 60s folk club feeling.

Our first thought was to call the album The Drifters or Songs of The Drifters, but whenever we mention that to anyone they think of the Mo-Town group from the 1950s and 60s. We've had some other lame ideas but nothing we can use.

So I'm asking all you creative and clever people if you have any ideas for a title for this album.

Thank you!

Was it Bob Dylan who sang "Drifter's Escape"? Perhaps there's a line in that?

"Oh, help me in my weakness,"
I heard the drifter say,
As they carried him from the courtroom
And were taking him away.
"My trip hasn't been a pleasant one
And my time it isn't long,
And I still do not know
What it was that I've done wrong."

Well, the judge, he cast his robe aside,
A tear came to his eye,
"You fail to understand," he said,
"Why must you even try?"
Outside, the crowd was stirring,
You could hear it from the door.
Inside, the judge was stepping down,
While the jury cried for more.

"Oh, stop that cursed jury,"
Cried the attendant and the nurse,
"The trial was bad enough,
But this is ten times worse."
Just then a bolt of lightning
Struck the courthouse out of shape,
And while ev'rybody knelt to pray
The drifter did escape.

That's it and it was his Bobness.

If you avoid "Drifters" and use "drifter" if you get my drift, I think you might be on less Motown ground.
Not got you a title yet, sorry.

Geoff Rodgers

Keep it simple but informative?
"Drifting. (songs from.....)"
or is there a hook line from the book which could be used to tie things together (without getting into copyright issues with the books publishers).
I have an LP from the '70s entitled "Music inspired by the Lord of the Rings" Not the most imaginitive title, but it accurately describes what you are getting.

I remember reading that novel a long time ago - what were the songs?
I know "The Bonnie Earl of Moray" was one, but I can't recall the rest of them.

Twa Sisters
Cruel Mother
Great Silkie of Sule Skerry
Golden Vanity
Geordie

Already see some great title ideas, thanks all!

If I had the book handy I think I'd look for a passage in it that refers to music and find a quotable part. Since I don't have the book handy, I looked at the excerpt on Amazon and found that the first line of the book is "Youth is truth." That seems like a possibility to me, followed by a descriptive subtitle, so something like:

Youth is Truth: Songs from James Michener's *The Drifters*

Carol

IMHO Carol's is easily the best title so far. If that doesn't work for you:

"Songs from the Book of James"
The 16 ballads sung in the James Michener novel "The Drifters"

What's all this about the Drifters being a Motown group? Everyone knows they were Cliff Richard's original backing group (before they changed their name to the Shadows) ;-)

But I don't think the US Drifters were ever signed to Motown AFAIK, they were on Atlantic for a while though.

Sorry for OT stuff, just showing signs of a partly mis-spent youth (partly because the rest was spent on folk).
