I was wondering if folks would be willing to take part in a quick straw poll of their favourite music/arts magazine(s).

Anyone admit to reading one or more of the following:

Acoustic
Word
Uncut
Mojo
Q
Maverick
Song Book
Aesthetica
The Wessex Muse Magazine
Folk North West
Folk on Tap
Living Tradition
Others

I buy the local Yorkshire quarterlies which are all pretty decent, and I buy Classic Rock & Fireworks which both feature Popular Beat Combos from days of Yore as well as new rock/metal bands. The national folk magazines are all pretty indifferent - rarely worth the asking price - although I do quite enjoy Maverick and Dirty Linen when I can find them.

Is Songbook the spin-off from the superb and much lamented Rock 'n' Reel? Should be pretty good if it is.

Cheers

Wayne

None of the above. Well. OK, Mojo.
fRoots is the major UK-based worldwide roots music magazine and English Dance & Song covers indigenous music.
Glad to see you omitted Smuglines though.

The absolute essential is fROOTS, though my bank manager might disagree due to the way it encourages my CD buying and gig-going habits. I rather like the Word, and occasionally read Mojo when travelling. Would thumb through Living Tradition but hardly ever see it and don't like it enough to subscribe (its rather stuck in the values of the 1970's)

I've never heard of Maverick, Song Book, Aesthetica or The Wessex Muse Magazine. What are they?

What is Folk on Tap? A regional one? I read whatever i happen upon: fRoots, Living Tradition(when I see a copy). Folk Northwest. Used to see Buzz but it is defunct, likewise Rock'n'Reel I think. saw Shred and Patches the otherday(Shropshire folkmag).

I've not found Word's selection of music to be very good. Their articles are a bit hit-and-miss too (although they do seem to have a few interesting ones in each edition), but the cover CDs are very average.

Classic Rock if the CD that month appeals.

Also Total Guitar and Guitar Techniques if they have stuff tabbed or techniques/exercises that I'm interested in.

Otherwise nothing else.

Graham.
