Subject: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: Arly Date: 18 Jun 06 - 02:40 PM "Peace Must Come," which contains the line, "over and over again," is New Zealander Paul Metsers' song, not "an Englishwoman whom Bob Walser met/knows," according to Priscilla Herdman, who recorded it. From http://folksong.org.nz/fwltgold/index.html: "For years we have sung along to such New Zealand folk standards as Farewell To The Gold, People I Want To Be, The Seal Children, The Swag and the Shiner, and Peace Must Come, without perhaps realizing they were all Paul's work." |
Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: Little Robyn Date: 18 Jun 06 - 03:11 PM Paul lives in the Lake District now - he's been there more than 20 years. Are you looking for him or for the words to his songs? There's another thread here about him and he still has a few song books for sale. Robyn |

Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Jul 06 - 01:13 AM I was confused at first, too, but I figured out that Arly is trying to point out that the song that's called OVER AND OVER AGAIN in the DT is actually PEACE MUST COME by Paul Metsers. I have added this information to the thread DT Attribution & Minor Corrections PermaThread. |
Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: Barry Finn Date: 11 Jul 06 - 01:36 AM What & why does this have to do with Bob Walser? Barry |
Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Jul 06 - 01:55 AM Barry: Look at the song in the DT. All will be clear (sort of). |

Subject: DT Corr: Peace Must Come (Paul Metsers) From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jul 06 - 04:56 PM I think the "DC" at the end of the song entry means the lyrics came from Dennis Cook - Dennis Cook and Susan Friedman were the original sources of the Digital Tradition, which was complied from their notes by Dick Greenhaus in 1988 (click for more history). So, we've had it wrong for a long time. The lyrics don't seem quite right either. I can't promise that Priscilla Herdman has them completely right, either, but here's what she has in the booklet for her 1987 Darkness Into Light CD - it's the only recording of the song that I've been able to find. PEACE MUST COME (words & music by Paul Metsers) 1. Many's the time I've heard the bells chime, Bring the people to pray on a sunny Sunday. Blessed the meek for the peace they seek Over and over again. Chorus: Over again, oh-over again, Say it, pray it over again, Over again, oh-over again, Peace must come. 2. From way out in space the earth is our place, A pinpoint of light, whose dwellers still fight, Survivors shake hands - then make weapons and plans To do battle all over again. CHORUS 3. Is it really so hard to lower the guard, And admit to the greed of more than we need? The words on the wall are familiar to all, I've been reading them over again. CHORUS (repeat first verse & Chorus) I don't hear Richard's "Peace that they keep" in the repeat of the first verse. Here's what's in the DT - I think you'll agree that Herdman's version makes more sense. Anybody have a more definitive version? OVER AND OVER AGAIN by an englishwoman that Bob Walser met/knows? 1. Many's the time I heard the bells chime, Ring the people to pray on a sunny summer's day Bless is the meek for the peace they seek Over and over again Chorus: Over again, oh over again, Oh say it, pray it, over again, Over again, oh over again, oh peace must come 2. From way out in space the earth is our place a pin point of light who's people still fight Divide to shake hands, they make lessons and plans To do battle all over again 3. Is it really so hard to know who's the god, And admit to the greed, of more than we need, The words on the wall are familiar to all, I've been reading them over again. (repeat first verse) filename[ OVERAGAI DC My personal opinion is that the song is trite, but I'm sure it strikes a chord with many people. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: GUEST,Guest - Helen Date: 11 Jul 06 - 05:35 PM The version transcribed from Priscilla Herdman looks correct to the best of my memory. I learned the song at least 16 years ago - may be 20 - to sing with a partner I've long lost touch with, and as a consequence haven't been performing it for a good few years. I don't remember it feeling 'trite' at the time. There were many songs that expressed similar sentiments but Paul Metser's one managed to say it's piece simply and memorably and the tune was a great vehicle for a real swell of chorus singing. |
Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: GUEST Date: 11 Jul 06 - 05:47 PM The lyrics are located at SingOut Magazine Peace Must Come ......... v.32#3 ......... p.53 |
Subject: RE: 'over & over again' 'Peace Must Come' From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 Jul 06 - 05:50 PM The Herdman version is most correct according to the words printed on the record sleeve, 'In the Hurricane's eye' bought from (and signed by) Paul Metzers himself. Substitute '..in space, the earth...' for '... in space, this earth...' and it's right. All words and music are credited to Paul. The second version (The DT one) looks like an aural rendition. Thanks chaps.. I won't be able to sleep until I've listened to the record now.... [Sagem Records SGM 279, published in 1983]. LTS

Subject: RE: DTCorr: Over and Over Again = Peace Must Come From: allanwill Date: 02 Feb 09 - 05:35 PM Didn't Fotheringay do a version of this? It was featured on a real doom and gloom radio programme called (I think) Fiddle and Drum, which starts with an elderly British couple walking through their back yard following the detonation of a nuclear bomb.
