I am looking forwards to going this year. I missed the festival last year as i was busy getting married.

Guys, Can i do a blatant plug of the Lulo Reinhardt gig. The guy is a direct descendent of Django and is one of the best alternative acts billed. Lulo plays jazz gitan and Flamenco with a great passion only displayed by the Roma. If you are at a loose end and want to experience somthing a little different - this would be my one recomendation.

Hopefully i will be getting round a bit between the Bedford, Leadfingers' session and any other i stumble across.

It will be lovely to finally meet some of the names here on the cat who i consider to be good friends.

Looking forwards to my only holiday this year before i become a dad!

Peter.

From Dave: "What are these sessions in the Volly Lizzie?"

Got my dates muddled Dave, they start on July 12th from 8.00pm and will be taking place every month from July onwards, just checked with the Volly themselves. He's actually got lots of other 'live music' going on nowadays too, but then, so have many of the other pubs in Siddy, on a fairly regular basis now, although The Volunteer is the only one brave enough to put the 'F' word on their blackboard! ;0)

So, hopefully things are starting to look up...and if the other pubs work out that having 'Folk' sessions proves popular, they may all start to follow! It was The Acoustic Cafe down in Dukes that started the 'live music' ball rolling in the pubs round here, and now, they all nip round to each other's pubs, to see what the 'opposition' are up to! ;0)

Who knows, soon Sidmouth may have a reputation for great music *all year round* and not just for the First Week In August!

Lizzie,

If it's all open-mike type stuff they'll be very like the pubs in my part of the world.

Every night of the week if you want it. Personally I don't. I've tried it down here in Sussex and i'm afraid most of it is rubbish.

However if Sidders is better all well and good.

See you in August.

The Acoustic Cafe Dukes is one of those god awful Pay To Play venues where the organisers kick off the night with a bit of Neil Diamond or Eric Clapton, then all the local teens come on and do Greenday covers to an audience of their friends and parents.

If this is the future of Sidmouths sessions we better all start learning Wonderwall.

No mention of pay to play on the "play at the Acoustic Cafe" page, guest, but the list of instruments at the bottom suggests a more varied menu than you seem to, including, as it does, Acapella, bodrhan, melodion, etc.

Certainly during Sidmouth 2005 it was very folk oriented, and I played several spots, as did a number of the professionals appearing at the main venues.

I think the future of Sidmouth sessions, is less endangered by Dukes than it is by uninformed negative comment.

Don, I think you'll find that our mischievious 'Guest' is actually Diane, or er...Countess Richard as she's known here.

Being married to one of the sound engineers for the Acoustic Cafe (yes..it's all coming out now isn't it!) ;0).....I can assure you that NO-ONE HAS TO PAY AT ALL! It is completely free, as Diane has heard me say over and over.

You merely turn up, put your name on the list, come back later or better still, sit down with the rest of us at the tables, or else stand beside all the masses of people on the pavement, right beside Dukes....and watch some darn talented people perform songs of all genres, covering everything from folk, acoustic, blues, a'capella, a bit of rock, cajun etc. etc.....Or basically, as I like to think of it, just GREAT MUSIC!

People of all ages, all backgrounds, all abilities.

Oh...and Barry and his lovely daughter Chloe are coming again this year, as he's stated earlier. YAY!! Last year, as Diane mentioned above, they gave us a GREAT version of Greenday's 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' and they sent the place wild with delight...particularly all the youngsters who were queuing up on the pavements to watch them!!

Then of course, there was Barry's band, Rhyzome's evening gig, when the waitresses threw caution to the wind, abandoned collecting glasses, took off their shoes and shimmied along with the rest of the audience as Barry and his band, folk rocked the night away! AND they sang us some great folk songs too....

You can hear Barry right here, and see Chloe too, can't wait to see them all again:

http://www.myspace.com/barryhunt

AND we had Duncan McFarlane and Steve Fairholme in the afternoon as well and Duncan sang us his great 'Not PC' song and had us falling around, doubled up with laughter! Such a clever song that one.....and then he and Steve gave us some brilliant traditional songs too! Duncan and his entire band are going to be up at The Bulverton on Thursday evening, which I'm really looking forward to, as last year in The Ham, we couldn't dance to their music..(well, *one or two* may have done...Whistling Smiley!) ;0)....but this year we can all copy those waitresses and get some Serious Shimmying going to Benajmin Bowmaneer et al!! ;0)

And Duncan you can hear right here too:

http://www.myspace.com/theduncanmcfarlaneband

AND....having just been over to Barry's page myself, I see he's got my very favourite song 'Children Of The Sun' on there now....which tells the story of what happened to the Native American People....and as I now have many Native American artist's sites on my page, Barry is up there with them, right where he belongs!! So...his song will be playing on my page for the next few days....(I change the music/artists regularly)

And if you go over there, check out the brilliant John Trudell, Mary Youngblood and Vinnie James, all of whom are from Native American backgrounds....and listen to Barry's song as you're reading all about them....then hang your heads in sorrow for how they were treated!

http://www.myspace.com/lizziecornish

Oh Diane....THANK YOU!!!

I'd forgotten just how wonderful a time I had down there last year! And one day all the Mudcatters walked past us, with their Yellow Lilo...and I followed them....and they ended up in the ocean, in a big circle, singing 'We're bound for South Australia' at the top of their voices! Absolute magic!!

Great to be reminded of all that FUN!

Roll on Sidmouth!!

Let's be quite clear about this; I wasn't in Sidmouth last August, I have never seen Barry Hunt play live, I have never been to Dukes and would never go anywhere near it, whether to listen to him or anyone else. 'Pay To Play' is a disgrace, contravening as it does all MU principles. If a performer isn't good enough to get paid gigs they should stay in their bedrooms practising until, if ever, they are.

Be fair Lizzie, Countess richard did not say she was the guest who made the ill informed comments about dukes and she has said she has not been to dukes, the marlborough as was, so she couldnt have been talking about it.

I remember Leadfinger being invited on to the stageat dukes during folkweek and doing his brilliant penny whistle stuff with whichever band it was. Superb.

Er...this is a thread about Sidmouth Folk Week.

If you'd like to talk about Pay To Play, Diane...perhaps you need to start a new thread, because there is NO pay to play at The Acoustic Cafe or at The Acoustic Stage in Sidmouth, during Sidmouth Folk Week, after Sidmouth Folk Week, or at *any other time*

If you'd like a translation of that, as I may have typed it in the wrong accent for you....please ask....

Thank you Sweetums!

Ah, the Marlborough, that's where you mean. It's certainly come down in the world if it's running open mics for teenagers. Pay To Play is a no-no, wherever and whenever people are stupid enough to go along with it. I've no idea if it happens at 'Dukes'. I've never been, nor as I said, am I likely to. What is certain is that it would never have happened at the Sidmouth International Festival we used to know and love.

I VILL SAY ZIS ONLY VONCE!!!!

ZER IS *NO* PAY TO PLAY AT DUKE'S ACOUSTIC CAFE OR AT ZE 'ACOUSTIC STAGE' AT DUKE'S DURING ZE FOLK VEEK!

Sweetums is there nothing on the telly for you to watch tonight then?
Are you so bored that you've got your Meddling Finger on again?????

>>>>What is certain is that it would never have happened at the Sidmouth International Festival we used to know and love.<<<<

Well, all I've got to say to that is that *Thank Heavens* that Sidmouth Folk Week is so much more open and accepting than that narrow minded attitude above...for without opening things up, broadening horizons and encouraging young people as well, there may well be NO folk only festivals left *anywhere* in the country in a decade or so.......

I should suggest that if you are narrow minded, bigoted, stirring or simply a pure pain in the whatsit....then perhaps you'd be better off going somewhere else instead...for the entire week.

I've heard Siberia is very pleasant during The First Week in August!

That way, we can all get on with enjoying ourselves tremendously and whooping it up all around town without Moaning Minnies R Us spoililng all the great fun!

Thank you!

Telly? Nah, there's no football on. Bored? Never. I'm listening back to sessions from Bazar Blä and Väsen recorded last night, and learning a Johan Hedin nyckelharpa tune on my violin. Y'know (oh, no you wouldn't) the sort of stuff that happens at a real music festival.

You really shouldn't use 'open and accepting' as a synonym for tolerance of twee pop. An unsuspecting real musician who might show up in the hope of doing something interesting with other real musicians is going to be desperately disappointed.

And you've no idea who turned up or what was being sung last year, as you were so busy trying to damage Siddy...that you forgot to turn up!

I know a great deal from some of those who turned up last year for just one gig cos it was all they were booked for and thus got accommodation for only one night. Says not a lot for what used to be a cohesive, week-long musical experience in LC's recently adopted home town. I did actually almost turn up in Sid for one day only myself but got off the train at Reading and went to WOMAD instead. Good move. I've heard that at the LNE that night, peeps were charged £10 entrance to the dance tent (there being no season ticket) and chucked out after about three dances because of (surprise, surprise) low attendance.

Perhaps me and my fiddle will be there, who knows? I don't need an invitation from LC, for fuck's sake. But you won't catch sight of me while peering through whatever window at the Bedford, even though that Barden chap has offered to clear me enough room to get the case open.

Hang on, I start defending you -countess richard- only to find that are actually implying what goes on at Dukes without ever being there by your own admission/posting.

I think your dislike of other posters and pay to play is over coming your common sense. You raised the issue of pay to play (which incidently i dislilke hugely for reasons i won't go in to on this thread) which has nothing to do with sidmouth festival or dukes.

Either you are trolling (which i hope you are not or you dont understand what has previously said in this thread or most likely you are mistakenly bring an issue which you care about into this forum which may well be worthy of a thread of its own, i hope it is the later and I will certainly contribute to it.

As i have said
a)the music is very good during folk week IMHO.
b)it is good during the rest of the year and I understand thaT
C)(not from lizzie but other sources) that it is not pay to play

See you that want to be there in a few weeks time

only just read your last post CR.

People being booked for one gig and only getting one nigt accomadation has been the norm at sidmouth for years. i know this for fact as people have opted to stay at my flat in sidmouth for a week rather than take the offer of a one or a couple of nights accomadation. There was no change to the policy as far as that goes.

you might be right about the LNE I can only speak from personal experience. I loved the lNE last year as there was more room to dance. I didnt get chucked out on the nights that i attended and I didnt here of it while I attended the festival.

Hello Mike, yes thank you for what you said. But I've no idea what goes on in 'Dukes' and care not (as far as music is concerned). I didn't raise the issue of 'Pay To Play'. Someone else did, who may or may not be right about whether what used to be the Marlborough operates such a policy. I oppose it wherever and I'm glad you do too. I do however object very strongly to LC (who hasn't the faintest idea of what used to happen in instrument and dance workshops and sessions) dismissing these totally and suggesting that the future of Sidmouth (if there is one) lies in her variety of 'acoustic pop'.

Oh, and re: accommodation. Yes, I know that during the latter years of the Heap regime there was an increase in 'bus-in-bus-out' headline acts. But what I am drawing attention to is how many of those who in the past would have stayed for the duration and done workshops (whether instrument tuition or playing for dancing) did not last year because they were offered neither the workshops nor anywhere to stay. I know that it is not only at Sidmouth that this is now occurring. But I am scarcely alone in regretting that a festival that was once unique is now nothing more than a watered down, bog standard festival with nothing to distinguish it from a dozen others. Sidmouth was special . . . once.

It's OK Cllr....Diane and I are er....very well acquainted from the R2 board.

She'll go out of her way to deliberately misinform, insult, accuse or abuse anything to do with Siddy Folk Week and anyone who has a hand in helping with it....whilst of course, coming to the town and participating in it.

Luckily I've constructed my Trusty Trebuchet, down on the beach, between the rock islands. It's all ready and waiting for her arrival and we are, at this very minute...deciding whether to fire her off into the darker reaches of Budleigh Salterton or far beyond the safety of The Cobb at Lyme Regis.

I think I prefer the latter really, as I don't think the former is really fair to the poor, unsuspecting residents of Budleigh Salterton...who've done nothing to warrant such an unfortunate happening as a Flying Countess dropping upon their heads, other than erect signs saying that people will be find £1,000 if they dare to remove the pebbles from their beach!

Besides....beyond The Cobb there may now dwell Sharpy Toothed Sharks....

Yes!...Even gobal warming has a silver lining!

The Cobb it is then!! ;0)

PS...Countess..you'd better bloomin' not be coming to see Coope Boyes & Simpson. else all hell may break loose! Because YOU are not going to be allowed anywhere near MY Boysies!

Diane and I are er....very well acquainted

No we're not. I've never (to my knowledge) clapped eyes on this person in my life, In fact, I don't believe she exists but is actually a random spam generator.

>>>>But I am scarcely alone in regretting that a festival that was once unique is now nothing more than a watered down, bog standard festival with nothing to distinguish it from a dozen others. Sidmouth was special . . . once.<<<<<

Did you know that Sidmouth was on the main news today? And in the main papers? Seagull problems you know! Not *just* Siddy but all over the country...and not just seaside towns either..in land too...

HOWEVER.....it has given rise to a thought!

I have...A Cunning Plan!!

Not only am I going to catapault 'the countess' far out to sea, miles beyond The Cobb....but....I'm going to first dress her up as a seagull, this will ensure that if the sharks don't get her...the men from 'The Ministry of Seagulls' WILL!!!

Oh...'tis a *brilliant* plan! And it's *sure* not to fail for the disguise will fool them all!!

LOOK!!!!!

It surpasses anything I'd ever thought of for Stevie Scarlett!

We'll send her down into some dark hole,
Where the sharks will have her body,
And the devil have her soul.

Oh how I wish this squabling would stop. Whilst sometimes I agree with Diane and sometimes with Lizzie I just wish we could keep focused on the idea of the thread. The 'Pay and Play' thing was put in there as a spoiler by the usual annonymous 'GUEST'. Suffice to say that the 'Acoustic Cafe' at Dukes was not 'Pay and Play', neither is it, nor will it be the future of Sidmouth, that's down to the people who go, and also to those who don't of course, by which I mean if not enough people go then it loses money and it won't happen. I've said it before and I'll say it again , Sidders has changed as everything does - it suits some and not others, but harping on about the way it was is not going to change that, and baiting people is only going to make this board boring. Please, please can we stop the baiting - we should be debating!

I only came on this thread to counter madlizzie's claims that I was in Sidmouth at all last year (I wasn't), still less at a kiddie's wannabe singaround at the Marlborough. However, to be parachuted by whatever means into Lyme would be OK, especially if there was a chance of meeting Jeremy Irons on the Cobb but purleese, not those boring old CBS blokes.

I was wondering whether to go to Sidmouth this year - after reading this thread I have reluctantly decided against it.
