I first heard this sung by Isabel Sutherland at Ballads & Blues in Soho Square in 1959. Robin Hall & Jimmie MacGregor were also there - while Isabel sang "parrot" at the end, Robin loudly sang "carrot". From the look between them, he'd obviously done it before.

On pages 70-71 of “ Homage to Caledonia: Scotland and the Spanish Civil War” By Daniel Gray on Google Books can be seen reference to the song as sung by International Brigaders during Th Spanish Civil War

I wonder why she thought this was a song for children (her audience in the video), probably for the catchy tune and sing-along chorus.

Since the thread now is prefixed with origins we might as well add that the song is one of our oldest folk songs with a medieval version extant. It exists in many different formats but always recognisable as related.
