This is a Newfoundland song which I heard for the first time today on Radio Newfoundland. It was a very moving song. I do not know if it is old or new, or who the male artist was that performed it. Unfortunately, Radio Newfoundland does not provide a playlist so you never know what or who you are listening to. However they have some of the best folk music on the net.

There may be others, but Buddy Wasisname And The Other Fellers did it in one of their more serious moods.

BY THE GLOW OF THE KEROSENE LIGHT
(Wince Coles)

I remember the time when my grandpa and I
Would sit by the fire at night
And I listened to stories of how he once lived
By the glow of the kerosene light.
By the glow of the kerosene light.

He said Mom and Dad send me off to school
Where I learned how to read and to write
And they listened for hours
As I read from my books
By the glow of the kerosene light.
By the glow of the kerosene light.

Your grandma and I we were wed at 16
Lord she was a beautiful sight
And proudly I placed the ring on her hand
By the glow of the kerosene light.
By the glow of the kerosene light.

About one year later, your daddy was born
And your grandma held my hand so tight
On I can't tell the joy as she brought forth new life
By the glow of the kerosene light.
By the glow of the kerosene light.

But having her child, it did weaken her so
She just wasn't up to the fight
For she looked so peaceful she went to her rest
By the glow of the kerosene light.
By the glow of the kerosene light.

Then as now the times they were hard
To succeed you would try all your might
And sometimes love bloomed and sometimes dreams die
By the glow of the kerosene light.
By the glow of the kerosene light.

By the glow of the kerosene light.

I failed to mention that the Bonne Bay, Newfoundland band, Anchors Aweigh titled the song The Glow Of The Kerosene Light on their 2005 CD Time On The Bay. The song has been getting a lot of air play, probably because of the most excellent lead vocal by Wayne Parsons, but the entire group is worth a good listen on their debut CD. :-)

I have been off the net for 26 hours while observing the Sabbath. I have just returned and seen all these answers to my query. I want to thank you all for helping me out on this one.

As far as I can tell, the original recording of "Glow of the Kerosene Light" was by Buddy Wasisname & The Other Fellers, recorded by a Newfoundland record company in 1993:

It was also recorded in 2005 by Anchors Aweigh of Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland.

And also in 2011 by a group called "The Once":

There's also a recording by a group called Hermitage Green:

They're all good, but my favorite is by the group called "The Once."

After a bit of grubbing around with Google, I found what I think is the original recording on the album: "I Want to Be a Working Man Again" (1985) by Wince Coles https://secondhandsongs.com/artist/181095
