Subject: Chanteyranger & Radriano new CD From: Peter Kasin Date: 03 Jul 06 - 03:20 PM Richard and I recorded a new CD of chanteys and sea songs, titled "Cast Off Each Line." It's now in the hands of Oasis mfg., and should be shipped and ready for sale in a month. Here is what we say about it in our liner notes, plus the track list: In this, our second CD, we continue our exploration of Anglo and Black traditions of chanteys (or shanties), the work songs of sailors, stevedores, and fishermen. We also include some of our favorite non-working songs of seafaring life. There are a number of sea song collections and field recordings waiting to be ined by today's singers. There is a quiet revolution hapening in the world of sea music, as more and more collections are being made available to the public, and as more source recordings are being relerased onto CD.

They're now ready for sale. It was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Derek Bianchi at Muscletone Studios, in Berkeley, CA., and we highly recommend him. He's justly revered among Northern California musicians. Graphic design by Sara Glaser, who also designed Radriano's 2002 CD, "Time Ashore Is Over," and our 2004/05 CD, "Boldly From The Westward." I just love your tastes in what you decide to record. This is a must. Technically it's very well balanced, the voices are crisp & clear & the harmony is dead on. You guys also nailed the instrumental backing, very tasty. The singing is as close to what the ears would ever to want to hear & as for getting in the styles of the Georgia Sea Islands (Old Tar River), the Bahamas (Mary, Come Join Our Religion), BWI (Gonna Get Home By'n'By), I'm tempted to ask if you guys Black but then you do the Bark Gayhead like you're Nantucketers (are you still Black?) who've moved in from the Great Lakes (In A 4-Master), which the tune you wrote Richard for it is a perfect marriage. The rest of the songs are just as prime as all of these. Again, you've both certainly recorded a must for anyone the loves a shanty & set an awful high standard for anyone one else who has thoughts of recording shanties, you bastards. I love the balance of lead and harmony, the instrumentation when used complements rather than dominates the songs, and the notes provided are informative. I had also been impressed with Mike Kennedy's singing of "Paris Here I Come" at the Mystic Sea Music festival late night sessions and I'm pleased to hear it so well recorded here. I'll have more to say about other tracks, I'm sure, after I've listened to them more. This is another fine group of songs that (thank the ghods) haven't been done to death. Chantyranger and Radriano are really cutting a name for themselves as scholars as well as fine musicians in resurrecting these songs. Keep 'em comming, guys, and I hope that you won't mind if we other (lesser) talents learn from these CDs and sing them -- perhaps in your very presence on a chanty sing night. |
