From: Peter Kasin

Richard and I recorded a new CD of chanteys and sea songs, titled "Cast Off Each Line." It's now in the hands of Oasis mfg., and should be shipped and ready for sale in a month. Here is what we say about it in our liner notes, plus the track list:

In this, our second CD, we continue our exploration of Anglo and Black traditions of chanteys (or shanties), the work songs of sailors, stevedores, and fishermen. We also include some of our favorite non-working songs of seafaring life. There are a number of sea song collections and field recordings waiting to be ined by today's singers. There is a quiet revolution hapening in the world of sea music, as more and more collections are being made available to the public, and as more source recordings are being relerased onto CD.
  1. Roll The Cotton Down.      Lead: Richard
A very popular tops'l and t'gallant halyard shanty that was also used at the capstan. Our version, having a grand chorus, is a capstan chantey.
  2. We're All Surrounded.    Lead: Peter
A cargo-loading chantey with roots as a minstrel song and spiritual.
  3. The Ward line.   Lead: Richard
A cargo-loading chantey collected by Ivan H. Walton, from the recently published book Windjammers: Songs of the Great Lakes Sailors.
  4. Never Weatherbeaten Sail.   Lead vocal, guitar & tinwhistle: Richard. Fiddle: Peter
John Conolly's reworking of an old mariner's hymn.
  5. The Old Tar River.    Lead: Peter
A Georgia Sea Islands chantey used for loading heavy timber into ships.
  6. Homeward Bound.   Lead: Richard
From Stan Hugill's Shanties From The Seven Seas. Hugill felt that this capstan shanty stemmed from the old forebitter, a process often repeated in the days of sail.
  7. Run, Let The Bulgine Run.   Lead: Peter
A halyard shanty found in Stan Hugill's Shanties From The Seven Seas, a different song than the popularly known capstan shanty "Clear The Track, Let The Bulgine Run." A "bulgine" was a 19th-century African American slang term for a railroad engine.
  8. Oro Mo Bhaidin.   Lead: Richard
A rowing song learned from our good friend Shay Black, who sings it in Irish. We kept the Irish chorus and refrains, but we sing the verses in English, translated for us by Shay Black.
  9. The Bark 'Gay Head.'   Lead: Peter; guitar and harmony: Richard
A forebitter from mid-19th century New England whaling. "Root, hog or die" is an old slang term meaning search for what you need to survive, or perish. Very true for whalemen whose pay depended on a succesfull voyage.
  10. Shenandoah.   Lead: Richard
Another cargo-loading shanty with verses reflecting the love of Shenandoah as a geographical location.
  11. Mary, Come Join our Religion.   Lead: Peter
A Bahamian chantey from Andros Island, used for sponge fishing and hauling boats. Peter learned this from an Alan Lomax field recording.
  12. Just As The Tide Was A-Flowing.    Voice and Guitar: Richard
A traditional English song of seduction.
  13. Gonna Get Home By 'N' By.    Lead: Richard
A typical West Indian or Southern states work song taken to sea and turned into an American hauling chantey.
  14. Caller Herrin.'    Lead: Richard
Learned from Australian singer Danny Spooner who we met at the 2005 Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival. This is about the cry of Scottish fisher women as they paraded the day's catch for sale.
  15. The Capstan Bar.   Lead: Peter
A capstan chantey, learned from the singing of the English nautical group Salt Of The Earth (Danny and Joyce McLeod and Ingrid and Barrie Temple).
  16. Unmooring.   Lead: Richard
From W.B. Whall's "Sea Songs and Shanties," a song dear to the old-time sailor, and full of seamanship.
  17. Swell My Net Full. Lead vocal and fiddle: Peter, guitar and harmony: Richard
Roy Palmer collected this fishing song from the English bargeman Bob Roberts. In his collection, "Boxing The Compass," Palmer cites it as one that "may have been used to accompany rowing or net hauling, as well as for the pleasure of singing."
  18. Fire Down Below.   Lead: Richard
A capstan chantey collected by Professor James M. Carpenter in the 1920s from Welsh seaman William Fender of Barry Docks who served at sea from 1878 to 1900.
  19. In A Handy Four-Master.    Lead: Richard
Another from "Windjammer: Songs of the Great Lakes Sailors." Collected from Captain Henry Ericksen, Milwaukee, 1932. No melody was given for the song in the book so Richard wrote one for it.
  20. Paris Here I Come.   Lead: Peter
A French capstan chantey Peter first heard sung by Mike Kennedy at the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival. Mike graciously supplied Peter with the lyrics. Richard adds his inimitable vocal styling in the last verse.
  21. Nothin' but a humbug.    Lead: Richard
Collected by Professor James M. Carpenter from Welsh singer Rees Baldwyn who learned it from singers in Savannah and New Orleans.
PM if interested in pre-ordering. $16, plus $1.50 P&H, or if you'd like more information.

Thanks.

I am a veritable Chanteyranger & Radriano groupie. These guys can do no wrong - well, at least when it comes to sea music. I had to fix Chanteyranger's screwed-up HTML above...
I could be a Charley Noble groupie, too - but I wonder what he baits his breath with.

Thank you for those nice words....and thank you, Joe, for making it look more readable. Good thing we had someone other than me to do the graphic design :-).

I checked into the local bait and tackle shop, Charley, but they didn't have anything to catch breath.

While I'm at it, graphic design is by Sara Glaser. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Derek Bianchi at Muscletone Studios, Berkeley, CA.

Chantyranger et al-

I generally bait my breath with "Fisherman's Friend."

I'm particularly pleased that you've recorded "Paris Here I Come" which has haunted me ever since I heard Mike Kennedy sing it late one night at Mystic. Mike is a treasure. Now Norris Dale is working it up as well.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, I'm a bit biased but I think this new cd is our best effort to date.

Not sure how many dates I'll get out of this but I'm hoping for the best. I think I'll leave off baiting my breath. Not a good idea if you're going on a date.

Radriano and I are now the proud parents of a new baby CD! It came in at a few ounces, in a 6-panel Digipak. They're now ready for sale.

It was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Derek Bianchi at Muscletone Studios, in Berkeley, CA., and we highly recommend him. He's justly revered among Northern California musicians.

Graphic design by Sara Glaser, who also designed Radriano's 2002 CD, "Time Ashore Is Over," and our 2004/05 CD, "Boldly From The Westward." We recommend her to anyone recording a CD or needing other types of graphic design. www.saraglaser.com.

This one's another gem, you guys should be real proud of your 2nd baby.
I just love your tastes in what you decide to record.

This is a must. Technically it's very well balanced, the voices are crisp & clear & the harmony is dead on. You guys also nailed the instrumental backing, very tasty.
The singing is as close to what the ears would ever to want to hear & as for getting in the styles of the Georgia Sea Islands (Old Tar River), the Bahamas (Mary, Come Join Our Religion), BWI (Gonna Get Home By'n'By), I'm tempted to ask if you guys Black but then you do the Bark Gayhead like you're Nantucketers (are you still Black?) who've moved in from the Great Lakes (In A 4-Master), which the tune you wrote Richard for it is a perfect marriage.
The rest of the songs are just as prime as all of these.
Again, you've both certainly recorded a must for anyone the loves a shanty & set an awful high standard for anyone one else who has thoughts of recording shanties, you bastards.

LOL, & a GREAT JOB well done.
Barry

Congrats, guys. You have set another high water mark of quality. I'm drowning in excitement, gushing with enthusiasm, spouting words of praise, overflowing with joy. This is truly an oceanic achievement, a whale of an accomplishment. There are many fish in the sea, but you two are the catfish's pajamas.

Hey, why are you pointing that harpoon at me?

Truly, this is great. Best of luck with your new offering.

Elmer

Peter and Richard-

JudyB and I are enjoying listening to your new CD as well. We've really got to listen to it some more to provide better feedback other than we're really delighted, but not surprised, by how well you've done.

I am sending you an image of Little Egypt, as an attachment via regular e-mail, to go along with your notes on "Fire Down Below." Yes, it's time that the "the hoochy-coochee dance" is featured in that song!

Cheerily,
Charley Ipcar

Peter and Richard have done an excellent job of finding traditional songs that not many people have recently recorded, and they deliver these song well. I love the balance of lead and harmony, the instrumentation when used complements rather than dominates the songs, and the notes provided are informative.

I had also been impressed with Mike Kennedy's singing of "Paris Here I Come" at the Mystic Sea Music festival late night sessions and I'm pleased to hear it so well recorded here.

I'll have more to say about other tracks, I'm sure, after I've listened to them more. But you should both be very proud of what you've accomplished, and contributed to nautical singers all over this wide world.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

How wonderful to get great feedback from other singers we admire or, in Barry Finn's case, we bow down before.

And this time I got to use my otherwise useless talent of belching on cue.

Sorry, I posted in the other thread before I saw this one. That's what I get for not checking in here more regularly, I guess. Congratulations you guys, and I'm looking forward to having my very own copy of this release; your last CD was fantastic. Again, will there be one at the Plow for purchase? (Pretty please?)

Thank you all for your good words. like Radriano, I'm very honored that you who know sea music are responding so well to it.

Got the CD from Chanteyranger at the Plough on Sunday, and I've already listened to it several times. This is another fine group of songs that (thank the ghods) haven't been done to death. Chantyranger and Radriano are really cutting a name for themselves as scholars as well as fine musicians in resurrecting these songs. Keep 'em comming, guys, and I hope that you won't mind if we other (lesser) talents learn from these CDs and sing them -- perhaps in your very presence on a chanty sing night.
