Subject: Cowboy in the Coupe de Ville (Nitty Gritty Dirt Ba
From: GUEST,Pat
Date: 04 Jul 06 - 11:50 PM

Over the years I've had no luck locating a recording of a song that might be titled "Horse Trailer on a Cadillac"/"You're Talking to the Cowboy in the Coupe de Ville", or even any evidence that it existed. It was on a homemade compilation of songs performed by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. (I borrowed this one from a different boyfriend in the mid-1980's!)

Y'all (Peace, actually) just helped me track down a folk song I told a similar tale about--so here goes: These are all of the lyrics that I can currently remember (includes some mistakes):

Refrain:
10-4, buddy, come on back, horse trailer on a Cadillac,
You're talking to the cowboy in the Coupe de Ville
Chug a lug up one side, fly down the other
I'm a lover of the other side of the hill

That's what my daddy told me
How to ride the bull
Got a jingle in my jeans
Sore places in between
I'm leavin' Tennesse
With a [purse and bull]

. . .
Jump while he's moving
Just walk away
. . .

Turn up that radio
And don't think about rodeo
Don't think about Roundup
Up in old Cheyenne
It's a crazy circuit
But you still work it
Just turn the sound up
Let's check the scan

CADILLAC COWBOY (OTHER SIDE OF THE HILL)
(Chuck Pyle)
« © '91 Bee'n Flower Music, BMI / Bug Music, BMI »

Hold tight with a leather fist watch out when he starts to twist
That's what their daddies used to tell them boys how to ride them bulls
I got a jingle in my jeans sore places in between
And I'm leavin' old Salt Lake with a push and a pull

10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac
Yeah we're talkin' to the cowboy in the Coupe deVille
Chug-a-luggin' up one side slidin' down the other
Well I'm a lover of the other side of the hill

Turn up that radio don't wanna think about a rodeo
Don't wanna think about a roundup up in old Cheyenne
It's a crazy circuit oh but still you work it
Turn down that sound boys let's get up and check the scan

10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac...
[ guitar - piano ]
Bandana hangin' on the mirror still wet from ear to ear
Well I guess it's true then what the wise men say
When you ride your last one make sure he's the best one
Jump while he's movin' tip your hat boys and walk away

10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac...
10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac...
Well I'm a lover of the other side of the hill

That is from

Info on the recording there, too. Give it a google.

Stop the search engines! I tried Peace's method with google and it seems to have worked! Song is called "Other Side of the Hill".

Thanks, Peace! You found a better site than I did, with more accurate lyrics. After I wrote this, I read your method on my other thread and decided to try it.

For those interested, it's on their
"Partners, Brothers, and Friends" album

Hey -- a song you remember for 20 years . . . it's got to be okay!

Hmm . . . here are the "definitive" :) lyrics: a Pat-corrected version of what's found on the web site, http://www.song-teksten.com/song_lyrics/nitty_gritty_dirt_band/partners_brothers_and_friends/other_side_of_the_hill/

Actually, this is the "definitive" version of the song as sung by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on a recording Pat heard (the version Peace found is slightly different):

Other Side of the Hill
(From the album "PARTNERS, BROTHERS AND FRIENDS")

Watch out when they start to twist
Hold tight with a leather fist
that's what my daddy told me
how to ride the bull[s]
there's a jingle in my jeans,
sore places in between;
I'm leaving Tennesee with a push and pull.

Chorus:
Ten-four, buddy, come on back.
horse trailer on a Cadillac,
you're talking to the cowboy in the Coupe de Ville.
chug a lug up one side, fly/glide[/slide] down the other,
I'm a lover of the other side of the hill.

Turn up that radio and don't think about rodeo,
Don't think about Roundup up in old Cheyenne.
It's a crazy circuit, but you still work it.
Won't you turn the sound up, [and] let's check the scan.

Chorus

Bandanna on the rearview mirror
Still wet from ear to ear;
Once again it's proven what the wise men say -
When you ride the last one, you better make it a fast one
Jump while he's movin, just walk away.

Chorus

The url had a really obvious mistake "short places in between" and some typos (provin' instead of proven) and a copyright date of half a decade after I heard the song. One reason I wanted the lyrics is because it was very hard to catch some of the words on the homemade tape I had.

The version I posted was from Chris LeDoux. Funny how the 'folk' process woirks. Glad you found what you were lookin' for. Best to you.

Interesting . . . I couldn't find it a few years ago, because the 1985 album the song was on was just released on CD a couple of years ago.

And for those of you who are performers with web sites--the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band site (with their 40 albums) has no search function to locate anything by key word.
