A one hour concert recorded in London at St.Lukes Church.

It will air tonight July 5th at 9 pm on chanel 13 (WNET) N.Y.

PBS usually rebroadcasts these shows at various times on various stations.

Or check your local TV listings. They should have the PBS station's shows listed too.

Thanks, DB!

Just a word of advice, if you don't enjoy over hyped amplified (I almost called it music) skiffle, then find something better to do, it shouldn't be hard.

And if you enjoy the true spirit of folk music, you will enjoy this show.

I've been listening to the cd in my car & really enjoying it.
B.S. could've gone the traditional folk route with these songs, but I like the choices he's made.
Looking forward to the show.

"OVER hyped"??? WTF??
Seems Pete Seeger could use ANY hype that he gets....

"amplified"
I'm surprised a cranky old fart like you can hear ANYTHING without it being amplified....

" B.S. could've gone the traditional folk route"
But we've had more than enough of tradition.... That which doesn't change/evolve/grow, dies.

Well, I weighed in on this Springsteen effort in another thread, but I'll repeat myself anyway.

I'm a huge fan of the Boss. Less so of Seeger, but still a fan. And I think I enjoy the 'true spirit' (whatever that means) of 'folk music' and traditional music, and lots of music of that sort.

I love totally acoustic trad/folk & I love amplified trad/folk.

I'm really just not that picky. I like what I like, and definitions and labels and especially closed fisted, tight-assed adherence to the definitions and labels, are off-putting to me.

All that said, I hated the Seeger sessions. Thought it was one of the worst things the Boss has ever done. And I think his 'Ghost of Tom Joad' album/tour was some of the best stuff he ever did.

Others mileage will vary.

Guest, I appreciate your opinion - as long as we all understand that we have individual tastes.   What bothers me was your attempt (or whoever posted as Hootenanny) to turn off others from watching the show - "if you don't enjoy over hyped amplified (I almost called it music) skiffle, then find something better to do, it shouldn't be hard. "

I've also weighed in on another thread, and I explained what I meant by "spirit".   I won't bother repeating myself.

Thanks for sharing your opinion that I'm probably an idiot for disagreeing with your opinion Ron, and posting just to say so.

For the record, I wouldn't recommend this program either. Just not for the same reasons as Hootenanny.

So TF what?

He insinuated it by condescendingly and disingenuously saying "I appreciate your opinion - as long as we all understand...".

Do you really think he appreciated my opinion, Clinton?

I'm calm and cool, and could care less what anyone thinks about anything.

But yer man Ron--now there's a dude with some serious control issues.

Geez Louise. That's why God invented the remote. If ya don't want to watch/listen to the show, change the bloomin' channel. Or turn off the TV and put on a Pete Seeger album.

I taped the show. It was on too late for this old geezer. Looking forward to having a good ol' time once I get the mule to walk enough times around the spindle to rewind the videotape.

Let me put my .02 here---don't know that the exchange rate is for pounds.

In about 25 minutes the program (programme) will start here on PBS. Will I like it? I hope so. If not, well, I have opened my mind to something that should be experienced to broaden one's horizons, if nothing else.

I have heard the CD. Liked it. Is it a favorite of mine---not at all. Do I have thoughts of its place in the "canon" if there is such a thing? Sure.

Folk music is an evolution and whether it is Seeger in Folk (which he also interpreted---aside from the original political compositions) or Gershwin, Bernstein, Sondheim, etc; ---they also evolve. So, Springsteen's take on the old "chestnuts" is as valid as, say, the new take on " Sweeney Todd", the new (actually more original) Hamlet, by Branagh, or new versions of old folk tunes (melodies) as presented by new performers such as Full Frontal Folk, Red Molly, Pat Wictor to name just a few.

My point is that things evolve---like it or not.

I still would be mired in the Weavers of the 1950s if I had not realized that---much as I admire and love them and the music--that they opened a window to find out more. The "more" turns out to be not only the traditional but the topical, which, to me, folk music was about. It was about song, dance, community---and finally about spreading the "news". Bad choice of a word before---"was"---"is" is a =better word.

Guest - you have some personal issues to work out.   If you can't take criticism and accuse people with different opinions to have "control issues" then you must get out more.

Having just watched and am watching the PBS concert of The Boss I have to say that, taken on its own terms, is quite good.

By that I mean that as a TV program it is wonderful. Probably as a live performance even better---they always are.

That said, I add that it is still a "concert" where Pete Seeger involved the audience and Springsteen performs.   That, to me, is the difference.

I add that his piece about the US Government and New Orleans was right of a Pete Seeger presentation.

So-to sum up--great Television, great performance, great production values. Involvement for an audience and hopefully to carry out a message and a smile and participate ala Pete---No.

But Springsteen fans--as I noted in an earlier post--are just delighted at whatever he does. I guess we all have our partialities---me included.

Thats honesty

I am currently watching. I see Bill's point about not involving the audience, but the television is not showing the whole story.    Having witnessed the performance at Madison Square Garden, this special is not capturing the audience who were singing every word. To be in a venue like Madison Square Garden and join in with 20,000 people singing "We Shall Overcome", "Jacob's Ladder" and even "Old Dan Tucker" was an experience I will not soon forget.   The audience was participating in the pure joy of the songs.   No, this audience was not as committed as Seeger's audience is to the music and message, but it was a start.

Yes, Springsteen is a performer - but that is not a sin.   I never heard people complain that Laurence Olivier was just an actor or Van Gogh only a painter.   Springsteen is a brillant performer, and the 1 hour PBS special is edited from a nearly 3 hour concert that took place without an intermission. He gives his fans a show, and a message. Do they carry out his message? Probably not.   Seeger usually sings to an audience that is already committed, Springsteen is singing to an audience that proabably has not been converted.

No, it is not the folk music we grew up with. No, not everyone will like it. Nothing wrong with that.

No it's not folk music that I grew up with, but it is, to me, the most exciting album that I've heard since the Sixties

I am looking forward to seeing Superman this weekend!

You might try your local PBS station this weekend for Springsteen. Often the individual stations will repeat programs such as this.

I saw this on BBC and I thought it was the best thing I have seen in ages.
Also, it has turned loads of people I know onto songs they had never heard before. Giving folk songs new life is what it's all about I would say.

This weekend is too busy.... and if I download it, I don't have to put up with the BS attached to PBS.... I can then watch it at my leisure....

Besides, it's almost done downloading already

That link is for the original CD/DVD that contained the documentary on the making of the music. I don't think the PBS concert is commercially available yet, and I'm not sure if there are plans to release it.
