Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: Wesley S Date: 11 Jul 06 - 10:02 AM That's a shame. It makes you wonder what kind of music he would have produced if he hadn't become an acid casuality. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: woodsie Date: 11 Jul 06 - 10:11 AM Syd wasn't just "one of the original members" he was the founder of pink floyd. It was his spaced out vision and unique (at the time) guitar technique that created the freaky pschedelic floydian experience. He has been sadly missed from the music scene for 35 years and now we will never be able to hear him again. Thanks Roger "Syd" Barrett for all that beautiful music. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: M.Ted Date: 11 Jul 06 - 12:56 PM Waters and Gilmore expressed the following idea: We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here. Pink Floyd was Roger "Syd" Barrett's vision, even long after his departure--you can always hear his voice in the music--in a sense, he was one of the great tragic figures of pop music, because he was unable to fullfill his own dream, but in another sense, he won out, because what he began was carried on-- |

Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: *daylia* Date: 12 Jul 06 - 12:43 PM Ok, let's do that. I don't think anyone could deny the profound, undying influence of Syd Barrett, and particularly of his mental illness, on the other band members and on their output over the years. The best example of this is in the dark themes/focus of Floyd's greatest works (imo), Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. I remember once, years ago, the priest at Sunday Mass delivered a whole sermon on the spiritual insights found in the following verse: When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse Out of the corner of my eye I turned to look but it was gone I cannot put my finger on it now the child is grown the dream is gone .... .... I have become Comfortably Numb. Wonder what Syd would have thought of that! May he rest in Peace. daylia |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: MikkinNotts Date: 13 Jul 06 - 04:05 AM I must say I think it is as absolute disgrace that "ClintonHammond" has decided to repeat his views in this Obituary thread and I am not sure it was a good idea to paste part of that thread from four years ago, just to prove a point. Have some respect! For those interested in more meaningful thoughts and memories regarding Syd Barret go here |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: alanabit Date: 13 Jul 06 - 07:30 AM For me he will always be one of those iconic figures of the sixties. Because he was brilliant and original early on, we thought he was going to keep on improving and producing stunning music for many years. We were younger and we thought that the Beatles would take us over the horizon into an infinity of new possibilities. We thought the Stones would retain their immediacy and dark edged threat indefinitely. Folk rock was going to grow and folk singers were going to reach every household. Most of those illusions were well and truly buried ten years later. Hendryx, Joplin, Parsons, and Morrison were all dead. The Beatles grew up and broke up. Drugs and ill discipline destroyed the Stones phenomenal guitar axis and acid/drink/mental illness casualties like Syd Barret and Peter Green were gone, never to return. For me, Syd Barret was part of the dream. Back then it seemed impossible that our icons could grow old. I don't think there has been a dream like that for some time. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: redsnapper Date: 13 Jul 06 - 07:41 AM Hi Alan, Peter Green is very much alive and active musically again (albeit a bit mentally battered!). He was a regular listener too for many years during his hermit days in the Sunday session I used to run in London. Check out Peter Greeen's Splinter Group. All the best, RS |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: alanabit Date: 13 Jul 06 - 07:45 AM Indeed. I know he is back playing the blues, which I am glad to hear. There is none of the stunning originality of his writing in the late sixties, however. There are good bands around still, of course, but I don't hear anyone making music as revolutionary and as accessable as that of the late sixties any more. Most of what I hear is either one or the other, but never both. Thanks for replying RS. Regards, Alan. |

Most of which seems to be negative.... Just like one would expect mental illness to effect people.... negatively..... Pink Floyd survived, succeeded and thrived, in SPITE of losing Syd to his illnesses.... maybe even because of losing him to his illnesses |

Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: GUEST Date: 13 Jul 06 - 02:37 PM It's an accolade to the wonderful man that when 'some' people just don't get him they have to be angry. It's as though they can't understand the effect he had on others and have to stamp their feet because they're not part of it. Syd was one of lifes originial maverick spirits. He had depth and magic in his head. The shallow will never comprehend. Hope he meets his piper. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies aged 60 From: Jeff Beck Date: 28 Jul 06 - 10:50 AM What people don't seem to credit Syd for, is the development of slide/echoplex/wha wha tonal strangulation on a modal incremental scale. This was important in reaching into the brain of a tripping individual to space him/her out. It is a style I certainly thank Syd for developing back in 1965/66 before hendix or myself even thought of it. |
