Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 03 Aug 06 - 01:23 PM as former Chair person of Sheffield Folk Festival I can recommend it - not involved really this year as too many other committments but the Kelham Island Museum is a fantastic venue and if you like a good mix of singing dancing and music it has a real balance ( Sheffield Folk Scene is generally buzzing and the Ceilidhsoc at the Uni really has them all dancing)- check it out if you want a festival to end the season on. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 03 Aug 06 - 09:58 AM unfortunately for me, I was suffering from highly painful sciatica so walking to & around the various events was a prob. However, had my chauffeuse drive my car up to the X Keys, where we enjoyed a fab sinaround sesh on Sat afternoon & again in the evening. The new management were very welcoming & late Saturday night presented us with several LARGE JUGS of 'SCORCHER'!! Whew!- Fab ale & company!! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: VIN Date: 03 Aug 06 - 08:05 AM Ta for that Red & White Rabbit. Maybe i'll catch a slice of the pie in a future guise at some point. Good to see yuz at Saddleworth. Fab wannit? Hope to pop o'er the border sometime in the future and sus out one or two clubs over t'other side of the hill so to speak. Sheffield festival looks like it could be nice and then there's the Roy Bailey and Martin Simpson gig at Sheffield City Hall for Palestine children - must try and get to that!. Sithee folks :-) |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 06 - 04:19 PM Has anyone got a review of the concert side of things for those of us who coud'nt go? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Linda Kelly Date: 02 Aug 06 - 02:18 PM just got my computer working so add my heartfelt thanks to everyone, but especially Geoff for the amazing time we had. We enjoyed everything, from the singarounds, and the performances. Finally, an sensational last night at the Cross Keys and the wonderful late night drinking in 8 pints van. The War of the Roses was a rather lucky win and I remain in awe of the Lancashire team. I got home and wrote a song I was that inspired! As for Hazel' dark chocolate voice -it was sounding pretty fine to me over the weekend, so we are gearing up for Hull Shanty Festival in September! thanks again to everyone but especially Ali- we missed you very much and you are in our thoughts Linda xx |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: r.padgett Date: 02 Aug 06 - 01:35 PM Pistachio is it true that you are doing voice over work for Dark Chocolate that week? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Pistachio Date: 02 Aug 06 - 06:25 AM Jim, I'll not be at Whitby. Foolishly I've got myself 1 week of work so unless my old man whizzzez me up by motorcycle on the Friday I have little chance of being in attendance. Oh woe are we! 'til next time ! H. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,padgett Date: 02 Aug 06 - 05:12 AM That was Geoff Turner above [old git] cocking it up! Yes Geoff Miller did sterling work at Saddleworth and with lots on his mind |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,old git Date: 02 Aug 06 - 05:10 AM I meant Geoff Miller of course |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,old git Date: 01 Aug 06 - 06:30 PM And big thanks to Geoff who took on even more than the great amount of work he usually does because of Ali's absence. |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 01 Aug 06 - 02:09 PM I spoke to Ali on the phone a few minutes ago; she's feeling rough and not looking forward to several weeks off work and enforced Taking It Easy, but she's very relieved that she had the operation in time. It was actually more serious than previously suggested on this thread: Ali had a ruptured bowel, and the operation she had was literally a life-saver. She's extremely grateful to the doctors concerned. Ali also asked me if I could pass on via Mudcat her love to everyone and her thanks for all the good wishes. She's received some good feedback about this year's festival and is already beginning to think about 2007. Atta girl! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: VIN Date: 01 Aug 06 - 12:44 PM Yep it was fab folks. Went so fast. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS to all the committee and stewards and residents of Uppermill for another great festival. Hard to believe t'was the ninth. A fab, friendly musical extravaganza listened to and performed by young and old! Highlights? difficult cos as Pistachio sez it was all so fabulous but I must mention the young-uns who once again shone brilliantly (no dis-respect to t'owd-eruns). Were'nt Trasna great – think what they'll be like in years to come! Anna & Cormac from Uiscedwr were also tremendous (you too Kevin!). I think Cormac must be the best Bohdrain player in the world, awesome!! Sadly, never got to see Talking Pie but hopefully next year? Talking of Pistachio – it was great to hear you Hazel & Linda (Hissyfit). Also good to talk to you and join with you in the choruses in the survivors session at the Cross Keys. Great night eh? Speaking of which, I was made up when Gerry Brady guested, brilliant to hear him and Tony Downes with the fabulous Hometowners . Thought I was back in MSG for a mo!! Finally, I think everyone missed the presence of Ali who i'm glad to hear is on the mend and look forward to seeing her back next year – the 10th , wow! Apologies if i did'nt recognise any mudcatters at first (my aging brain can't handle it! Tek care y'all Vin |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Pistachio Date: 31 Jul 06 - 01:30 PM THANK YOU - EVERYONE. Linda and I thoroughly enjoyed our extended weekend. It was great to catch up with so many familiar faces and make new friends too. The war of the roses caused us needless concern. It was such a unique event and we were delighted to be on the winning side. If Stanley Accrington had sung the song he saved for the folk club, Lancashire would have had the clapometer firmly on their side! I'd love to mention the highlights of our weekend in SADDLEWORTH but it was ALL so fantastic that we can't select a particular moment. Eric and John were superb, as ever, and the young talent was incredible. Our money is on Gene - what ability! It seems the only complaint was about the lack of fresh air in venues.... but I'll not moan about the weather we've had. We did not want to leave the survivors 'folk club' last night - what a superb end to a tiring but fantastic few days. Bob and Sue vG top marks for hospitality, Col K for Hugs and Scowie for being scary in opposition! Special Love to Ali and to Nutty and all I can say is THANKS again. Linda is still without easy computer access. I'll pass on any info. Keep smiling. H. x. |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,old git Date: 31 Jul 06 - 06:33 AM just to echo what another great weekend it was. We had some great singarounds in the con club..and the Delph Donkey has a real kick!!! thanks to everyone who took part...apologies to those we couldn't fit in to the maritime set... but it was great that there were so many we couldn't fit them all in (if you know what I mean) Again the young performers (and youth certainly does not mean lack of quality) proved that , in spite of what some people would have us believe , folk music is not in its death throes. We will certainly be hearing a lot more of Jim Molyneux and Trasna (With that amount of talent already think what's to come in the future!). Uiscedwr almost literally went into meltdown in the overpowering heat to deliver a storming set in the Commercial. here's to the next one! geoff turner |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 31 Jul 06 - 06:15 AM returned from a great weekend in Saddleworth thanks to me young handsome chauffeur with the recovery van - thanks to everyone who looked out for me - it was great to see you all again too will really have to get in training for the next couple of weeks for Whitby - I hadnt realised how much training you needed to do for drinking and and having a good time! Scowie told me Geoff wouldnt dare let Yorkshire win - he had to eat his words on Sunday! Well done Yorkshire!!! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: r.padgett Date: 31 Jul 06 - 04:03 AM Cheers Mark Sorry I missed the 'Manchester Ballad session' , it clashed with 'The Yorkshire Garland' ~ and we had to book you at Barnsley to see your 'Harry Boardman' presentation!! Regards to Chris Anyone interested should hear the proper tune to 'Calico printers clerk' lot of research done by Mark Dowding and Chris Harvey All the best Ray |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Mark Dowding Date: 31 Jul 06 - 03:32 AM Ray - I told Scowie to offer Geoff 10 but he said you'd offered 20. I told him to go back and make it 50 and if that failed he could go to a pound but no more than that! I'd like to say the best team won but of course they didn't. Seriously though it was an excellent event with a packed house. Thanks to everybody who came to the "Manchester Ballads" spot that Chris and I did on Saturday afternoon in a rather warm and stuffy room at the Commercial and also to Sid's Lancashire Garland" spot on Sunday. Chris and I are thinking of something different for next year but more of that nearer the time. Cheers Mark |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 30 Jul 06 - 04:10 PM Just got back from another fantastic Saddleworth. 'I'm singing in the rain' |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Bernard Date: 30 Jul 06 - 01:39 PM Ali is delighted to hear all your well-wishes (Gareth, her son, printed off this thread), and was flabberghasted when Copper Kettle turned up on the ward and sang for her! She's perked up a lot during the week since her operation, but is a long way off being fighting fit. If you want to send her a card, she's in Ward F5 (Bay 3), Royal Oldham Hospital, Westhulme Avenue, Oldham, Lancs, OL1 2PN (UK). |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: r.padgett Date: 30 Jul 06 - 12:41 PM Well I am back Sunday Yorkshire won the War of the Roses much to the disgust of Scowie How we won I am not sure. We were up against the collective striking power of Sid Calderbank, Mark Dowding, Chris Harvey, Derek Gifford, Stanley Accrington and of course Keith Scowcroft The Yorkies were Hissifit (Linda and Hazel), who are going from strength to strength (watch out for the Minerva!!), Copper Kettle (Michael and Brian), Ray Padgett (me) and John Greaves On paper I reckon we didnt stand a chance, but truth will out and the Yorkists just came out on top (according to Geoff Miller) Well joking aside, what a brilliant weekend and very well attended. Some had been there since Thursday! I missed a lot due to an appointmenet with apint and song! Many thanks for all who supported the Yorkshire Garland workshop on Sat pm. Surprisingly we still have people to record in 2006!! O and yes it did rain a little bit Ray Thanks to all the committee and I hope Ali has a speedy recovery! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Cath Date: 28 Jul 06 - 12:58 PM Does anyone know if there is anything happening on Sunday afternoon that my 5 year old granddaughter might enjoy? She loves dancing! I can't find anything on the web site. Cath |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: andyval Date: 27 Jul 06 - 05:39 AM There's a fire at Stalybridge still going after a week but no real effect on the Uppermill area so far. There have been a few fires at Greenfield - the Costa del Dovestones having been very hot and dry for few weeks ! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,padgett Date: 27 Jul 06 - 03:54 AM Dunno but I suspect the heavy rainfall round Saddleworth keeps the incidents of fire quite low! Ray |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 26 Jul 06 - 08:25 PM are the moorland fires having any negative a/effects in Uppermill? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: 8_Pints Date: 26 Jul 06 - 08:15 PM Soldier Boy, In the past we have gone directly to the campsite, informed the steward that we are performers. He allowed us to park our campervan and then buy the camping permit at the town hall. Bob vG |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Soldier boy Date: 26 Jul 06 - 07:05 PM I,m just camping (no weekend ticket). Does anyone know if you have to pay for camping tickets at the festival office in the Civic Hall as in previous years, or can you now pay at the campsite itself? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: 8_Pints Date: 26 Jul 06 - 06:59 PM Brilliant response Nutty! I'm sorry to hear you won't be with us this year. Hurry and get better soon. And thanks also Ray for the info: see you on Friday Night. Regards, Bob vG |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: nutty Date: 26 Jul 06 - 05:39 PM Bob .... the campsite is at the end of Wellington Road,Greenside - as shown here on Multimap. To see everything plainly click on 'aerial' and the sports ground will come to life Multimap |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: r.padgett Date: 26 Jul 06 - 05:37 PM Interest that 8 pints! the camp site looks difficult and long to access but you need to go round from Saddleworth 'Civic' by car as if you are heading for the road over the pennines, i think this is Greenfield. This is usually signposted for the camp site and gets you onto the large flat camp site which has a sports changing room etc. Once camped on the camp site the walk to Saddleworth is surprisingly short even at night! Ray |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: 8_Pints Date: 26 Jul 06 - 05:06 PM Does anyone have the postcode for the campsite so I can create a Multimap "blue clicky" for my mate? He will be coming from Sunderland and although the festival website provides a map to Uppermill it does not show the campsite itself. I seem to recollect it is in the Sport's Ground, but trawls of the local Oldham websites fail to locate it (unless its disguised under a different title). Hope Ali is recovering now, Bob vG |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Pistachio Date: 26 Jul 06 - 12:45 PM Oh Hazel - what rotten news. I was going to attend your workshop....and after all if you hadn't invited Hissyfit to your 'do' 18 months ago we'd never have met Ali and not be on the bill this year. Oh woe. Hope you get sorted soon. Love ' n ' hugs fro9m me and Linda Kelly. (She is well but out of 'computing' action.) No more sick notes will be accepted. ! Hazel. x . |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: nutty Date: 26 Jul 06 - 08:22 AM I know how dear this festival is to Ali. She'll be gutted to miss it. (no pun intended) Get well soon Ali. Sadly I've had to pull out as well .... I've recently been diagnosed with an under-active thyroid and Lupus. Both of which are reacting badly to the recent heat-wave. I need to stay close to home until the medication is sorted. I still intend to present the workshops at Saltburn FF. HAVE FUN ........ I'LL BE THINKING OF YOU ALL PS - make sure you all go to support Hissyfit. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Mark Dowding Date: 26 Jul 06 - 08:13 AM Not the best way to get publicity! I ran a folk club in a village near Peterborough in the late 80's and the landlord suggested we ran a festival using the field behind his pub. Everything went well on the organisation side - committee was set up, a ceilidh band was hired, a village procession was organised...then I fell off a ladder at work and broke my back six weeks before the event! The accident was mentioned in the local paper and it got out that I was organising the festival - I had photographers, reporters, radio interviewers round the bedside wanting to know all about it - especially when someone said that it might be possible to attend the festival lying on a trolley but doctors had said no - totally impractical of course. Got plenty of publicity though and we made more than a few bob for Leukemia research. Thankfully I recovered and we ran another festival the year after but no-one wanted to break anything for the cause! Get well soon Ali - we'll miss you! Cheers Mark |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth FF: Who's going? From: Raggytash Date: 25 Jul 06 - 08:26 PM Our best wishes for Ali's speedy recovery, to amended Wombat's previous contribution we have had an offer to sail on a tall ship at the weekend, a chance that may not be repeated. In view of this sadly we will not be making Saddleworth for the first time EVER. I hope it will be the wonderful festival it has been in the past and I know that all will have a great time at the best little festival I have ever been too. My thanks in absentia to all those wonderful people who have it such a great festival to date Cheers Raggytash & Wombat |
