Colonial Music at Little Brown Church

Weds, Aug 9 at 7:30, at the Little Brown Church in Round Pond, Poor Richard's Penny will perform music from the time of our nations inception. With dynamic and colorful arrangements, the duo covers a broad spectrum of the music popularly enjoyed during Benjamin Franklin's time. Dressed in authentic period costumes, playing stately instrumentals, comical tavern songs, lively dance tunes and colonial ballads, they entertain audiences both young and old.

Both musicians are multi-instrumentalists. Kevin Skorupa
(whistles, flute, cittern, guitar, percussion, and vocals) studied music composition at Berklee College of Music.He has developed several programs for children which incorporate songs and stories dealing with nature and the seasonal changes.Lawrence Young (fiddle, English guitar, mandolin, and vocals) studied violin with Andrew Jennings and composition with John Appleton at Dartmouth College. He has also studied at Berklee School of Music with Matt Glaser and at the Longy School of Music with Wolfgang Schocken.

The duo have been performing together for over twenty
years, engaging their listeners with delightful instrumentals and rousing sing~alongs. Poor Richard's Penny has performed in many historic settings such as Boston Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, King's Chapel,The
Massachusetts State House, Longfellow's Wayside Inn, Blanchard's Tavern, and historical societies and in schools.

Poor Richard's Penny brings 18th century American music alive in a manner that not only does honor to its traditions, but also recognizes both its historical fascination and its contemporary appeal. These musicians have realized the very spirit of these songs and tunes.

Yes they are good indeed.

And Larry Young, in another capacity, is 1/3 of "Ye Mariners All." Who will be playing at the waterfront in Salem MA on August 4, and for the folk music society of Branford, CT on September 9.

The Round Pond in Maine, I know, is only accessable by boat, a mile below the western-base of Black Mountain Fire Tower.

What township are you referring to?

It WOULD be a delightful "Frontier Setting" for a gathering.

No water, No electricity, No commodes, No showers. Plenty of freshwater mussels to roast in the shell.

This Round Pond actually has a zip code, and is not really a pond, but a coastal keyhole harbor on the east side of the Pemaquid peninsula. It is in the township of Bristol.

Last year, it would have been rustic as the Little Brown church (circa 1853) had only a 3-holer out back for a necessary. We now have modern plumbing ,though the pews are still without cushions... nice acoustics!

I can thoroughly recommend both Round Pond and the Little Brown Church, and vouch for the fact that you can get there with relative ease from New Hampshire - and Boston. We've made the trip from Cardiff here in the UK, for heaven's sake, so pull yourselves together, chaps, and support the good music!
Oh, and hi, Julia! Steve says if you want someone to play Benjamin Franklin he's able and ready (and bears a scarily close resemblance to him). He's playing Ben in Bath in October. That's *our* Bath, not yours!
