Well, maybe I don't understand the question. Just put it into C or D or whatever you like, and transpose. The song, by the way, is the song that was written.

As the notes to my recent CD proclaim, the song was written by Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett in the back of a car on the way to a close gig when both were regulars with the WLS Barn Dance in Chicago. I think I got that from Gene's autobiography some 25 years ago, but don't hold me to it.

RIDING DOWN THE CANYON (When the Desert Sun Goes Down)
by Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett (1936)

When the evening chores are over at our ranch house on the plains
And all I've got to do is lay around
I saddle up my pony and ride off down the trail
To watch the desert sun go down

Chorus:
Riding down the canyon to watch the sun go down
A picture that no artist ere could paint
White faced cattle lowin' on the mountain side
I hear a coyote whinin' for its mate

Cactus plants are bloomin' sagebrush everywhere
Granite spires are standin' all around
I tell you folks its heaven to be ridin' down the trail
When the desert sun goes down.

From Gene Autry's De Luxe Edition of Famous Original Cowboy Songs and Mountain Ballads (Chicago: M.M. Cole Publishing Co., 1938).

I guess I'm most familiar with this song from the Willie Nelson recording. For the record, here are the lyrics from arlo.net

Ridin' Down the Canyon
by Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett

When evening chores are over at the ranch house on the plains
And there's nothing left to do but lay around
I saddle up my pony and go riding down the trail
Just to watch the desert sun go down

CHORUS:
White faced cattle lowing, sagebrush everywhere
Granite spires are standing all around
I'll tell you folks it's heaven to go ridin' down the trail
Just to watch the desert sun go down

Ridin' down the canyon to watch the sun go down
A picture that no artist e'er could paint
Cactus plants are bloomin' on the mountain side
I hear a coyote calling to its mate

CHORUS

When evening chores are over at the ranch house on the plains
And there's nothing left to do but lay around
I saddle up my pony and go riding down the trail
Just to watch the desert sun go down

CHORUS

One correction: the second line of the chorus from the Gene Autry songbook should have read 'A picture that no artist ere could paint'

No apostrophes in that "ere" so I don't know if it's a shortened form of "here" or "ever". Both would work, though.

I believe the song was in the movie Tumbing Tumbleweeds (1935)
