Subject: Swing and swing on the garden gate... From: Coralena Date: 04 Mar 97 - 12:28 PM Still looking for the lyrics to a couple of songs my Grandmamma sang. #1. Rain when you going to rain again rain Rain the rivers deep again, shower your blessings on me The sheep are in the meadow, the cows are in the corn They know something is wrong. Old mother earth can never give birth When you're away so long. #2. I like high up in the trees to climb And eat sugar cookies 6 or 8 at a time. Swing and swing on the garden gate And when there's company we sit up late. Thank you for any help you can give. Also, I would like to say how very much I love this site. Most people my age don't know or appreciate music that was before their time and when I check in here and see such songs as "My Darling Nellie Gray", that my Daddy used to sing, it touches my heart. I was a late surprise and my parents being of an older generation I was blessed with hearing this music as a child. Thank you! |

Subject: Lyr Add: RAIN (Billy Hill, Peter de Rose) From: GUEST,Cliff Nelson Date: 11 Feb 09 - 08:57 PM It's been a lot of years. I don't know if Coralena is still active. But I know the song "RAIN." you can hear an old Odis Elder recording of it here: http://lightninwells.com/audio/odiselder_rain.mp3 Cliff Nelson wcn1220@ecu.edu --- RAIN Words, Billy Hill. Music, Peter de Rose. New York: Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., Inc., copyright 1934 Rain, when ya gonna rain again, rain? Grow the golden grain again. Shower your blessings on me. Rain, make the rivers deep again, rain. please don't let me weep again. Shower your blessings on me. The cow's in the meadow and the sheep's in the corn. They know that something is wrong. Old Mother Earth can never give birth When you're away so long. Rain, make it green in lover's lane, rain, for my gal and me again. Shower your blessings on me. We used to sing songs about sunshine begging the clouds to roll by, But now there's enough of sunshine. you'll hear everyone sigh: — Instrumental break — The cow's in the meadow and the sheep's in the corn. They know that something is wrong. Old Mother Earth can never give birth When you're away so long. Rain, make it green in lover's lane, rain, for my gal and me again. Shower your blessings on me. |

Subject: Lyr Add: WHAT I LIKE (Seegmiller, Chadwick) From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Feb 09 - 01:04 PM Coralena hasn't posted—under that name, anyway—since 1998. I don't care; this is like solving a puzzle, and is its own reward. I found this song in Teacher's Manual ... for the Progressive Music Series by Horatio William Parker, Osbourne McConathy, Edward Bailey Birge, William Otto Miessner (Sacramento: California State Printing Department, 1918) WHAT I LIKE Words, Wilhelmina Seegmiller. Music, George W. Chadwick, "Composed for this series." I like to ride on a load of hay, To tramp in puddles on a rainy day, To swing and swing on the garden gate, And when there's company, to sit up late. I like high up in the trees to climb, To eat sugar cookies, six or sev'n at a time; But some things I like, it's best not to do, So I can't do all that I like. Can you? [The book also has sheet music.] |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swing and swing on the garden gate... From: GUEST,Coralena Date: 02 Jul 12 - 03:41 PM It has been awhile but when I found these replies and the link to the song Rain, it filled up my heart, thank you so much! I have the sheet music now for Rain and a song book with What I Like in it. I was lucky to find two song books, The Progressive Music Series by Silver, Burdett and Company that has a number of songs in them my parents sang, they were songs of their childhood and my Grandmama knew them as well. It is wonderful and a blessing to be able to share these songs with my family, they are a treasure to us, bringing back golden memories of our parents and grandmama. Now I just need a piano and a piano teacher:) I hope all of you have found your treasures too! |
