CRAZY JOHN
When you wade in the water, the people can't see the old reflections.
Crazy John, why you wanna go back again?

Subject: RE: Tom Paxton From: Mark Cohen Date: 01 Aug 01 - 01:46 PM They're all on Tom Paxton 6, so after work today I'll dig the album out of the box and put them down. (Though undoubtedly the redoubtable Mudcat will have them all within the hour!) I could probably do them all from memory, but the way my memory's been these days, I wouldn't trust me. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Tom Paxton From: Mark Cohen Date: 01 Aug 01 - 10:53 PM Hey, my memory was all right...except for some minor glitches on Cindy's Cryin'. But I think there might be a mistake in the DT..."We can make it but we better stop tryin'"-- should that be "start tryin'"? I can't get a clear auditory memory, but it does make more sense that way. Thanks for asking for these, vat...I've always loved that album. Now, while we're on the subject, let me ask this question again: does anyone know the identity of "Uncle Jack"? I heard Tom perform it at the Main Point near Philadelphia in 1971, and I believe he said it was about an artist who had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era. His nephew had been living with him, but the authorities took the boy away because of the uncle's "unsavory" character. I'd love to know more of the story. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: DT Corr: I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Jan 05 - 01:46 AM Somebody pointed out to me that the Digital Tradition had some typographical errors in the lyrics for this song: I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER WHERE I'M BOUND (Tom Paxton) It's a long and dusty road, It's a hot and a heavy load And the folks I meet ain't always kind. Some are bad and some are good. Some have done the best they could. Some have tried to ease my troublin' mind. [Chorus] And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, Where I'm bound. Can't help but wonder where I'm bound. I've been wandering through this land Doing the best I can, Trying to find what I was meant to do. And the people that I see Look as worried as can be, And it looks like they are wondering too. [Chorus] Oh, I had a little gal one time, She had lips like sherry wine, She loved me till my head went plumb insane. But I was too blind to see She was drifting away from me, And my good gal went off on a morning train. [Chorus] Well, I had a buddy back home, But he started out to roam, And I hear he's out by 'Frisco Bay. And sometimes when I've had a few, His old voice comes a-ringing through, And I'm going out to see him some old day. [Chorus] So, if you see me passing by, And you sit and you wonder why, And you wish that you were a rambler, too; Nail your shoes to the kitchen floor, Lace 'em up and bar the door, Thank your stars for the roof that's over you. [Chorus] Source: CD booklet from Tom Paxton: Live For the Record Sugar Hill Records, 1996 - with some corrections based on the recording (the CD booklet says "ease my trouble in mind," but other sources say "troublin' mind." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2OnQ0ANO5Q |

Subject: RE: Tom Paxton - various songs From: Big Mick Date: 25 Jan 05 - 07:02 PM Are you referring to "My Favorite Spring"? Baseball song? |
Subject: RE: Tom Paxton - various songs From: Jimmy Twitcher Date: 25 Jan 05 - 09:15 PM Right, "My Favorite Spring." I think that the baseball is incidental, though. I think its really a father & son song. |

We pla(C)yed in the sandlots and the gra(G)vel scho(D)ol ya(G)rds. I on(C)ce had a try-out with the S(G)t. Lo(D)uis Ca(G)rds. The Cardinals said, "Young man, we sure like your arm. We believe you can make it. We'll send you down to the farm. You need a little seasoning; play a little Double A. We'll give you a chance to show how much you want to play. Chorus: Th(G)at was my favorite Spr(Em)ing. I (Em)could do an(G)ything. Fu(C)ll six foot tall and lean. I(D7) was just seventeen. M(G)y fast ball was not(Em)hing but smoke.
