Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: muppett Date: 12 Oct 06 - 11:25 AM well done to Dom (Collins) for winning on Sunday, if any of you lot in Mudcat land get chance to see him go, he's very funny. Mick I've got some squeezy Marmite, it gets a bit tuf squeezing when it's nearly empty though, hay that could be the basis of my song for next year's compitition. |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: Nick Date: 12 Oct 06 - 08:15 AM Comic song competition Well done Muppett but also well done my friend John who sang the Jake Thacekray song. He only started playing the guitar and singing songs in our local pub earlier this year and we think he has done really well in a short time Carol - we nearly came up Saturday afternoon but were a bit late getting the domestic chores out of the way and doubted things would still be happening |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: HipflaskAndy Date: 12 Oct 06 - 06:03 AM Sorry Hugh - volume in a venue like that was always a concern to us. I began the concert asking for feedback from the audience re vol levels - and asked again throughout the evening. Perhaps you could have spoken up as we requested - we don't bite! - and always have regard for opinion out there. There was no room for a 'desk' and sound engineer to sit somewhere out front and control the evening - such venues require setting up at the start from 'onstage' and leaving the 'mix' thereafter at a set level - which can be tweaked by the band tween songs if need be - but actually 'playing' prevents any constant attention. That is the nature of amplified folk-rock in small venues - and I hope you may give us a go sometine in a larger hall where a festival 'sound engineer can steer the sound - at the right consistant level - down a suitably shaped venue! At half time, I sat down in the seating where our 'partners' were and took the time to ask the four, shall we say, slightly more elderly folk sat adjacent and right in the firing line, about the volume level - they assured me it was just right for them and were enjoying it! (They re-iterated this at the end - as they stayed for the whole thing). It is difficult to find a level to suit all tastes, even worse to spread the sound evenly in such a venue as that. The room in question being two rectangles set at right angles, with the bar at the join, wasnae an ideal shape to aim at - then with the 'stage' set half way down one of those right angles and facing across the room's width rather than length, we were facing the smallest amount of 'seating' - and ended up cross-eyed trying to engage those to the left and the majority to the right. Interesting you thought the second half 'louder' than the first - no adjustments were made to volume levels at all as the evening progressed, though we did reposition the PA speakers 'direction' a little to cater more for the massed throng towards the bar, then round the corner into the 'other room'. Our pal Les (the steward of Otley Cricket Club) did a head count in that other room - there were over a hundred round there all trying to hear us, with a 'blockage' of some seventy or more around the bar in the way. Many folks in that area were clammering for more volume so they could hear us better! I suspect you were in the same 'room' as we were - our PA system was tiny (400 watts) compared to the rigs fests usually have in main venues, our drum kit was one known as 'Flatts' - they have just heads in rims, no shells to make 'em as loud as drums usually are. Both these factors were deliberate on our part to be as low level, in a small venue, as possible. True enough, the band may have seemingly increased in output - every band does... As the night progresses they play a liitle harder with excitement, adrenalin - that's natural i'm afraid - sorry it was too much for your party, but there you go, we did our best to put on a folk-rock show in a 'pub' setting - and I'd say - judging by the reaction of those there that stayed and enjoyed it thoroughly, that we were successful for the greater majority. The rooms remained full all night - a constant flow of newcomers replacing any that did go, whether it was for the same reason as yourselves, or whether they just didn't care for the music on offer, or whether thet just fancied having a look at what else was on around town for variation's sake...fair play to 'em. Point is though, the place was packed to the gunnels at the end (as it was all night) and we earned two encores from a wildly appreciative throng at the end. I do take your point and sympathise - and am genuinely sorry if it was too much for you in that setting. We enjoyed it so much - and were going down so well, we played nearly three hours! Pretty good value - hmmm, free entry wasn't it? We played that long because we were having such a great time based on the reaction we received, that bounced back from the audience. There, I've said my piece - spent longer on it than I meant. Nuff said. All the best to you - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 12 Oct 06 - 05:12 AM Duncan McFarlane & Band were superb Saturday night. An absolutely top performance (as per usual, I have to say). Interesting someone complaining about the volume. Around the side where many fans were standing, it would have been impossible to hear without a bit of welly from the speakers. The singing session in the Wheatsheaf afterwards (Informal but run with their usual skill & enthusiasm by Jeff & Ian) was great fun too. Saturday afternoon did seem a bit sparse eventwise but that's a minor quibble. A splendid weekend all round. |

Huge thanks to Chris B. for organizing.Sorry carol was disappointed. There was plenty to choose from...should have been where I was? Looking forward to next year... |

Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Oct 06 - 11:08 AM Did you not manage any sining, Carol:-D The Hill in is a lovely spot but, as stated, a bit remote from Ingleton. What I find easiest (for future reference) is walk to Ingleton via the lovely quiet road that goes past St Leonards chapel and then find someone sober enough to give me a lift back. If I can't manage to find someone I have to resort to knocking on caravan doors to see if anyone takes pity;-) We did have a very strange night at the Hill once when there should have been a rock concert on in the barn at the back. The band didn't turn up so all the headbangers came in the pub. The landlord at the time was a bit of a rockhead himself so he cranked the jukebox up full till about 2am - We were in the bunk rooms upstairs. When it got to about 11:30 I decided if I couldn't beat them I would join them and had a cracking good night. I'm pretty sure the girl with no clothes on must have been a bit cold though... Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: Carol Date: 11 Oct 06 - 09:07 AM Although I enjoyed starting the singaround at mid-day at the Hill Inn on the Saturday, we had a great audience and enough singers to keep going but I had expected more, perhaps people thought it had closed down! However we did keep going until nearly 5p.m. The camping was £8 per night without any electric hook-ups which I thought was a bit steep, plus I couldn't get a taxi into Ingleton. We did take the campervan in on the Friday evening but I've got to admit that the Friday night session wasn't my ides of a singaround/singers session. I was told that the Wheatsheaf would be good for singing on the Sat. night but there would also be a lot of noise from the regulars playing pool? etc. So we came home on the Sat. evening, overall pretty disappointed. |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: GUEST,migginz again Date: 11 Oct 06 - 08:45 AM I have to mention the Hill Inn briefly.... I was very upset to hear on the internet last year that the Hill Inn was closing. And very glad to find out that this RUMOUR proved UNTRUE. THE HILL INN IS ALIVE AND WELL and running folk sessions on the last Friday evening of the month (ring for details 015242-41256). I'm certainly aiming to go to one in the new year. I've spent many a happy hour in that pub and will gladly spend many more. See you there maybe???? |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: GUEST,migginz Date: 11 Oct 06 - 08:35 AM I had a brilliant weekend Tried the ex-servicemans on Friday but defected to the Wheatsheaf cos they had some lovely beer on. Not too mention musicians at both ends of the bar. Saturday we stomped up to the Hill Inn for more nice beer and a good bit of singing. Tried the Wheatsheaf again and as you say it was VERY NOISEY but fun all the same. Sunday we hit the Hill Inn again for the comedy singing competition which was wonderful, had a hard job picking the winner but Dom Collins proved his worth with a few extra (hilarious) verses as he picked up his trophy. Thanks to Mooncoyn for running that session and the sing around afterwards which I sadly had to leave before the end. Next year I think we'll have to stay Sunday night as well |
Subject: RE: Ingleton Folk Weekend 6-8 October 2006 From: GUEST,HughM Date: 11 Oct 06 - 08:03 AM The Duncan McFarlane Band were good, but why did they have to be so loud in the second half? My friends and I left before the end, for fear of suffering damage to our hearing. |
