Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST,sir rog at work Date: 04 Dec 06 - 12:19 PM the format for the next few weeks is (or I think it is): Next Sunday (10th) - Christmas do at Hodgson's. Bring food Sunday 17th - session in The Sun Sunday 24th - not sure but I expect it will be cancelled? Sunday 31st - cancelled? Monday 1st Jan 2007 - Monk's Walk Sunday 7th Jan - Monk's Walk and then as per usual starting in the Sun on Sunday 14th Jan R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 04 Dec 06 - 02:10 PM That is correct Rog. Lot of people away over the New Year, but a lot of the regular Beverley and 'ull Sessioneers asked me last year to organise summat on the New years day. Judging by the support for a singaround/playaround this year on the New Years day a democratic decision was taken to go with the Monday and cancell the Sunday. As the bowl'd Rog says we are back to normal? on the following Sunday which will be the first sunday of the month session and of course will be at "Monks Walk"..........now are we all clear? |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 04 Dec 06 - 02:18 PM I'm glad that I was right - it doesn't happen often (or at least that's what Lady Rog tells me):-) R |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST,specky Date: 28 Dec 06 - 10:38 AM just a quick update...............there is some work to be done but it will not be in the actual pub! there are plans to redevelop existing cottages which are almost derelict now which are in the car park, and a new building on the beer garden to give the pub another room as with our weather we cant use the beer garden very often......this room will be used as part of the pub for everyday use as the room with the fire isnt big enough for some things we book in now.......ie small parties, music sessions etc...and the kitchen is already there but it is going to be refurbished....the 2 new cottages are been rebuilt on the existing foundations.....the pub will carry on as it is with little disruption as possible.....hope this clarifies things for you regards specky |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Nick Date: 05 Jan 07 - 08:13 AM We are at the Thompsons Arms in Flaxton now rather than that nice Sam Smiths Blacksmiths Arms pub that you played at. As an aside it is now a very sad shadow of it's former self. Lindy - whose wedding you played at - left the pub a while back having had enough and it is now being run by reliefs who couldn't give a #*%& and it is very little used. Apparently Sam Smith's are having great difficulty finding someone to run it. With no proper kitchen to cater and no chance of refilling the pub with music etc and with drinking and driving being what it is these days it is not a great proposition. Ben (former landlord) and I and some friends who have very fond memories of those good musical times had an evening of reminiscences about it the other night when they came round to our house the other night for a gathering. Still I suppose we wouldn't have still have our livers left... Sad. Much too young to retire, Mick. ;) |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Les from Hull Date: 06 Jan 07 - 04:25 PM A shame about the Blacksmiths, Nick. I very much enjoyed my time there. I hope that Ben is happy, but it's very sad to see an excellent pub and music venue go down the tube like that. And younger people than Mick have been known to retire! See you on Sunday, Mick. Our lass'll be in tow an' all (after our brief sojourn in Whitters). Les |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Pistachio Date: 08 Jan 07 - 10:17 AM Congratulations Grandad Rog' Mick - I posted 'in appreciation' of the session of 1st Jan 2007 - but put it on the 'Beverley Music Support thread' - not the 'exclusive to Monks' one! Whatever, sorry to miss yesterdays singing! Had to get in some rehearsal time for our gig tonight. Will we be back in the Sun Inn next Sunday ? Hazel. |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 09 Jan 07 - 12:06 PM I'm afraid that I won't make the Tuesday evening session in the Monk's tonight. However, I'm sure that lots of others will - last week we had three fiddlers, two mandolinists, two harpists, 1 accordian, 1 concertina, 1 banjo, three guitarists and more whistlers than you could shake a stick at. Oh, and lots of singers too. Some of the above were the same people! Always room for more - and audience too. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Carol Date: 09 Jan 07 - 02:29 PM Oh you make me jealous - how many times a week can you get out for a sing in Beverley - I think I'll put my name down for the sheltered scheme there!! |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 10 Jan 07 - 09:07 AM Carol I know that I could be out every night of the week in Hull/Beverley and could double up some nights if I took every invitation to play further afield. As it is, I restrict myself to Tuesday and Sunday and I also prefer to play in venues where the beer is decent! Roger |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Carol Date: 10 Jan 07 - 09:53 AM B.... funny when we moved here I didn't realise there wasn't a folk club less than 20 miles away, there's a fishing lake just to the back of our little estate and Chris can't get to fish there, hebeen applied for membership when we moved and he's still 40th odd on the waiting list! Still I do like the place. I want to know what goes on on the Thursday practice night ?????? |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 31 May 07 - 07:40 AM It is that time of the month again folks!! I do realise people have familly commitments and that of a sunday, so at the risk of getting me head chewed of I should like to point out that I and others will be hot footing it back from Whitby and other points north, south and west for this sess. so it would be nice if we could all aim for, if not a 3.00pm start, at least to try and be there for that time. As usual all welcome. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 31 May 07 - 03:45 PM I'll be there R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Linda Kelly Date: 31 May 07 - 04:42 PM hoping to make an appearance Mick - might drag him indoors along |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Carol Date: 31 May 07 - 05:41 PM Same here Mick |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 31 May 07 - 07:12 PM Loverly!! |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Pistachio Date: 31 May 07 - 07:15 PM Possibility of my arrival too - but my 'significant other' will NOT make any appearances other than to taxi me around. He's really useful that way. Lucky me. H. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST,Kelk Brigade Date: 01 Jun 07 - 05:13 AM Can we come - thats if you can bear our company two days on the trot? |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Graham and Jo Date: 01 Jun 07 - 12:25 PM The Tuesday Monks walk session is in the pool room at the moment and they're playing loud music in the main bar. The accoustics are actualy quite good but it is a bit cut off. If it weren't for the enormous pool table in there it would probably be ok. :( |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Pistachio Date: 03 Jun 07 - 05:51 PM Thanks Mick, What a great session - even if I was rather late. Pressure of working for 'other half' who works for 'last second .com'! but he did taxi me home as requested! There were some fantastic songs and plenty of harmony opportunities. Till next time,H. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Linda Kelly Date: 03 Jun 07 - 06:00 PM great session Mick sorry if I was noisy! |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Carol Date: 04 Jun 07 - 04:04 AM I dragged im indoors along but others didn't manage! Great session Mick - see you at the festival. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 04 Jun 07 - 04:53 AM Thanks to all who attended, nice to see lot's of new faces. Just a bit of information in responce to the countless request for info about the Beverley festival and "Monks Walk". Myself and Sir Rog will be co-hosting singarounds at the "Monks Walk" both Saturday and Sunday of the festival. Saturday from 13.30 hrs to whenever Sunday from 13.30. hrs to whenever I have been informed by Lorraine (landperson of the "Monks") that as last year a marquee will be set up in the bear garden. We will have the option if weather and minster bells permit of using the inside of the pub. So if you sing, twang, strum, pick, blow, fiddle, whistle, drum, dance, monologue or just come and join in and or listen you will sure of a warm welcome at the "Monks" See "Beverley festival fringe" thread for further detail and information about the festival |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Graham and Jo Date: 12 Jun 07 - 08:24 AM The Tuesday session is still going in the Monks walk. The first part of the session is slow tunes and reading from dots aimed at beginners who want to build up confidence to play in sessions. It's in the pool room at the moment. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Graham and Jo Date: 19 Jun 07 - 05:29 AM Tuesday steady tunes and learners session in Monks walk is tonight. The last couple of weeks sessioners have outnumbered people in the main bar. It's a pity that enormous pool table is in the room It would probably be a good room if it weren't for that. If they are leaving the pool table there they should let the session back into the other bar. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 20 Jun 07 - 02:10 AM We was glad of that pool room this weekend !! Me and Sir Rog used the pool room at "Monks" during the festival when rain stopped play and the pub was heaving with Morris dancers. We managed to get over twenty five people in there with comfort and indeed they have a big cover for the table which is handy for glasses, instruments etc.The added bonus is the gas fire that works, which was handy for drying us all of!! Belated thanks to Lorraine and staff for all their help(see Beverley fringe thread) |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Graham and Jo Date: 20 Jun 07 - 07:15 AM The room is OK it's just that when you are sat arround the table playing it's so big it forms a barrier between people and spoils the atmosphere. There was the same problem at the sun when the pool table was moved into the room music sessions used to be in. There was a time we were in the Sun three times a week but you won't see us there now. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 20 Jun 07 - 10:04 AM It is very kind of Mick to give me equal billing at the Monk's but the truth is that it was all Mick apart from a couple of hours on the Sunday when he went off to be an "artist" and I covered the MC duties. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Wildboy Date: 20 Jun 07 - 11:45 AM Hi, I know this is the monks thread, but as the Sun Inn has been mentioned I just want to say what a great evening it was on Tuesday, the first of our 'Sun Songs' evenings. More about it on the Sun thread. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 21 Jun 07 - 03:58 AM But you was equal !!Thanks for that Rog and thanks to all who braved the elements on both days of the festival ,wind, rain and bells. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Graham and Jo Date: 21 Jun 07 - 07:09 AM We wish you well with the Tuesdays Roy! Its just that we regret the loss of the back room that was so great for tunes and cosy sessions. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 21 Jun 07 - 10:58 AM Graham & Jo Following their appreciation of the sessions and the folk festival, maybe the new people at The Sun will realise what an aberration it is to have that space occupied by a pool table. We all know that it is a recent thing put in by a very temporary landlord who wanted to play with his disreputable mates. Everyone else knows that it has no place in such a pub but the new people inherited it the status quo - maybe now they will see the light and get rid of it. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST,sir rog at work Date: 27 Jun 07 - 03:35 AM I presume that it is on this Sunday - 1st July Mick? Rog |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 27 Jun 07 - 03:48 PM Blimey! forgot about that what with fest and short month and that. Yes I shall be there for the 3.00am start. Hope to see plenty there. PS.thanks Rog |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 28 Jun 07 - 05:57 AM Is the old dementia playing you up then Mick? Lets hope that everyone else remembers to come. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 29 Jun 07 - 08:14 AM Well that is me and thee then Rog....less of the old........... eeerm?................ what was I doing/thinking/saying? Come to thst,................. who am I? |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 30 Jun 07 - 04:55 AM Well, since you are running the session and I'm the only other one going - I'll try not to be too unruly! R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 01 Jul 07 - 07:00 AM see you there then.............3.00pm start |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Pistachio Date: 01 Jul 07 - 04:21 PM Sorry I was absent. I had to attend a Wedding in Bicester yesterday - My old man was "Best Man" !! Hope there were more than the two of you singing today! H. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 02 Jul 07 - 03:14 AM Not many more as it turned out - about six in total. Quite a few "audience" though and a lot of noise. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 02 Jul 07 - 05:38 AM Thanks to the few who did make an appearance.Especially to Sue and Barry who come all the way from Rotheram to support the sessions. Re:noise; It was as shame a few selfish people spoil it for the many, but this is always a problem as it is a pub and we are seen to be the intruders, especially as in this case when the noisees were in the room before us. Due to the lack of support in the summer months - holidays/loads of festivals etc.- It may be worth while looking to cancelling this session from June to September, what do you all think? |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 02 Jul 07 - 10:07 AM ? |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Jul 07 - 10:17 AM Sorry we couldn't get there on Sunday, Mick, but we thought we could do with a day off, especially after indulging in strange drinks at Chris and Jenny's housewarming the previous night. Normal service will be resumed. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST,sir rog at work Date: 02 Jul 07 - 10:28 AM There is some merit in Mick's suggestion. I get the impression that many people are folked out after the festival and then they go off to other festivals and/or holidays during July and August. A break for those two months might be a good idea - I know that many clubs close over the Summer. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 02 Jul 07 - 03:57 PM Thanks for that Rog. A comment or two from the Sunday regulars would be most appreciated Yeh, I know the feeling Les, I had done two gigs -friday and Saturday- came a bit hard after a lay off.I know you would have had a great time at Chris and Jennies; lovely people. Mrs Ossonflags and I have enjoyed their generouse hospitallity in the past. . |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 03 Jul 07 - 11:56 AM I suppose that it is a self-fulfilling prophesy: Because everyone is away there is no-one here to discuss whether we should cancel the Summer sessions because everyone is away! Anyway, I will be going to the Tiger this Sunday for my session - all welcome as usual. R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Carol Date: 03 Jul 07 - 05:50 PM Sorry but was at 4 Fools last weekend and Cleckheaton next weekend, then Kelk, then Staithes, then Durham - lookes like the next Sunday we'll make will be the first one in August if we don't go to Lechlade. Saying that lots of people don't get away as much as us of the life of leisure persuasion! |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 04 Jul 07 - 09:05 AM Take your point Rog, but would rather get a feel through this forum instead of taking up valuable time discussing at length at singarounds/playarounds. Will be racing?/waddling back from the whitters to make your sess. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Les from Hull Date: 04 Jul 07 - 03:31 PM Maggie and I should be there this Sunday. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Pistachio Date: 05 Jul 07 - 05:33 PM |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Pistachio Date: 05 Jul 07 - 05:40 PM Oops, hit submit with nothing there!! What I should have written now follows!! Hissyfit will be absent - this Sunday 8th and also the 22nd and 29th 'cos we've got other places to be! Sorry. Maybe the 'summer recess' idea isn't a bad one. I hate the idea of not having somewhere to go singing in Beverley if I am available... and some great sessions are the less busy ones... but I'll go with whatever is decided, no sitting on the fence there eh! Decisions - Ugh. See you whenever. H. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST Date: 31 Jul 07 - 03:51 AM Mick I don't know whether or not you plan to run this Sunday at the Monk's Walk but I will be away. We had a very small turnout last Sunday at The Tiger and didn't get around to doing any singing at all! Rog |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 31 Jul 07 - 04:50 AM Sorry I lost my cookie temporarily R |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: ossonflags Date: 31 Jul 07 - 06:08 AM The sesssion will run this week as there will be people from Rotheram coming. NOTE;I will be informing Lorraine(specky)that i shall be cancelling Septembers session as the Hull shanty fest is on. Taking the numbers attending in last coupla months;holidays commitment, feativals etc.,I have made an organisors decision and will be cancelling the July, August as well as September sessions next year. |

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: GUEST,Pete Date: 10 Aug 07 - 05:40 PM Just to let you all know that the Tuesday sessions at Monks Walk are alive and kicking due to the tremendous energy of Graham in seeing it through a lean spell. We have new faces who are superb musicians and there is a real buzz about the sessions. |
Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 11 Aug 07 - 09:37 AM Glad to hear it Pete. I've felt guilty about leaving you all in the lurch for so long - I can sleep a bit easier now. Roger |
