Only a few days now, nearly folked out after a week at Whitby. I am dancing this weekend with Southport Swords. Anyone else going?
Cheers

My best friends Jon Berger and Kalia Kliban are coming from sunny California. He's a melodeon player/fiddler/singer, she's a Cotswold morris dancer, Appalachian clogger, and occasional caller. Their photo is on Jon's home page here. They are both on Apple Tree Morris in Sebastopol, CA (as am I, in an occasional sort of way). They are both wonderful people.

It will be their very first English festival and they won't have a clue where to go/what to do (I rather expect, though they do have English friends and may therefore be escorted by locals), so if you happen to meet them, point them to the best pubs, please!

Claire

One of the best pubs is the Marine Hall bar, with a huge selection of real (strong, flavoursome, warm to the American taste) ales.

Tell them to ask for Stu and Rusty at the Penny Dreradful office, and we'll make them welcome

Excellent, Stu. Happily I have routed them there already (assuming they receive either my e-mail or my voice mail) for the Brian Peters and Pete Coe concerts on Saturday. They seem to have left for the airport already so I am unable to pass on your kind message, but perhaps someone who sees this (and them) will do that for me.

Trouble is with the Marine Hall bar is that you need a concert ticket of some sort to even get past the inner doors of the Marine Hall:-( It is a good bar though and some good sessions go on in there.

I am hoping to be in Fleetwood from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon - Hanging about the fringe sessions and watching the dancing at the Marine gardens.

See you there:-)

I'll be there with Julie Ellison:

Friday 1 September

3pm to 4pm: Solo concert in the Ballroom at Hotel Elizabeth North Euston (note: this is an additional session for Julie and a change to the schedule since the festival programme went to print)

7:30pm to 11:30pm: "Folk on Friday", Hotel Elizabeth, North Euston. Running order: Past Carin', Robb Johnson, Rough Mix, Julie Ellison, Captain Cooper's Motley Crew

Saturday 2 September

10:30am to 11:30am: "Meet Julie Ellison", Legion Club, Copse Road. Come and have a chat, ask questions about guitars, guitar playing, songwriting, mermaids, life, the universe and everything!

2:30pm to 5:30pm: "Bowling Concert", Bowling Club, Lower Lune Street. Running order: HoBow Fiddle Group, Trasna, Julie Ellison, Alison McMorland & Geordie McIntyre, Strawhead

If any 'catters make it, come and have a chat. I'm the bald one in black at the mixing desk!

Might get down for an evening or so, but I'm sooo busy at work I might not be able to. Was originally hoping to do some stewarding for Alan, but, as I'm working the two following weekends on events (proper work, not fun work) I tought it might cause marital disharmony if I worked there too......

The marine Hall ba is bl**dy good craic though....

Looking forward to a great festival and maybe speaking to a few people who have become nodding acquaintances. Hope to get along to the guitar workshops and the singarounds. Hope the weather holds for the weekend. I love it up there!!!!

If anybody's around at 10:30 on Saturday morning then please come along to the Bowling Club and listen to the story of the Lancashire Cotton Famine with myself, Sid Calderbank, Norman and Mary Wilson and Mike Bartram. This is the story of Lancashire's darkest time when cotton was blocked from being exported from the Southern States of America to Lancashire during the American Civil War in the 1860's.
Many cotton workers and their families starved to death due to lack of work but thanks to the generosity of people from all over the world, enough money was raised to help the county out of despair.

Cheers

I am setting off around 9:30am tomorrow. I will be at Carleton Memorial Hall till around 2pm I think. If anyone fancies a break from folk there will be an excelent display of Sun and Yang style Tai Chi hand and sword forms going on somtime in between 11 and 1. :-)

Spoke to Dick and Susan today who tell me they were pretty damp last night. I am sharing a tent with them tomorrow so if it is still bad it looks like I may be sleeping in the car (again!) Unless of course some very kind person has a shed for a small gnome with a camp bed and bug bag;-)

I came, I saw, I was wet...

Found the tent - 1/2" of water in the bottom of my bedroom:-( Do I sleep in the car or call it a day? Had a walk to the North Euston. Had a pint and a listen. Thought to myself - If I wake up in the morning, full of this excelent beer, having been soaked to the skin and slept in the car all night how will I feel?

The answer was not good so here I am back home. Calling back tomorrow to dismantle the swiming pool...

Hope you guys all keep dryer than I was and have a good time. I'm going out for a pint with Spot the Dog to make up for my disappointment. I'll make sure we reminisce about past Fyldes and the glorious weather we had;-)

Cheers

Music was good tho. Lots of sing arounds and group sings. Good performers.

All hail Mr Kind Owner of the Gym for providing the indoor camping. Even if I only saw about 7 or 8 of us use it. It was surprisingly comfortable and many thanks to the good samaritans who took pity on a tired student and supplied a tankard full of really hot tea in the morning.

just down the rod in Blackpool...

Heavy rains bring traffic chaos

TORRENTIAL rain brought traffic chaos to Blackpool's roads this weekend.

Heavy downpours on Saturday morning saw Devonshire Road, Pedders Lane and parts of Bispham closed due to flooding.
Diversions were put in place as the roads were covered by more than three feet of water in some places.

Some motorists had to be helped to safety after their vehicles stalled in the water.

Staff at the Sugar Sugar bar and restaurant on Bispham Road, Cleveleys were also left counting the cost after the downstairs dining area became flooded.

A police spokesman said: "We had to close a number of roads when the rain was at its worst but were able to reopen them all within a couple of hours."

We got back home last night tired and happy. It was another great festival with something for all tastes and persuasions. We've already booked next years tickets (we don't do camping so we'll find another hotel!!). Thanks to Stu for the guitar workshops and for the posture tips. We saw you Mr Barden of the Garden but we passed by too quickly I think so I'm sorry - hope to see you at the Solent Festival. Was good to see some youngsters at the Bodhran workshop Sun with Fred Rose - I had to leave before the end because I had been booked in for a reflexology session at Heaven Sent in the Craft Fair - WOW!

Eric Bogle and John Munro were fabulous, Mrs Ackroyd Band (Plus canine vocals) struck the right notes and of course Tanglefoot. Sorry to all those others who were equally superb. There is a great deal of local talent up there as well - and it shows. Thanks to all the committee and to Alan Bell for the brilliant and warm festival - see you all next year.

Love and Peace

Ann & Richard

Hi All
Just a quick thanks to all those who helped us on the camp site
The reports of our tents demise were a little premature as we deliberately let it down on Saturday. By the end of Saturday night we were getting reports that our tent was somewhere in the Irish sea!!!
Chinese whisper syndrome I suppose. Thanks to all those offering beds and drinks, I have spent to long away from home and had forgotten how kind the Lancashire people are.
Hope to see you all somewhere down the road hopefully with better weather!!

Personally I think it went very well.

We had about 60-70 people in the Bowling Club concert room for nearly 2 hours listening to five people relating the story researched from books, diaries, newspapers and other archive material, and singing the songs written at the time of the event by people like Sam Laycock and that well known writer Anon. There is a point halfway through where there is nearly half an hour of talk without a song but that didn't seem to matter. Hardly anybody moved all the way through it, you could have heard a pin drop in the room.

The only downside was that the PA guy never turned up but the room was small enough to cope without it thankfully. There was only one comment from someone who admitted she was a bit deaf and had trouble hearing.

Several people came up to us afterwards saying how interesting it was - one girl is doing some research into Lancashire songs for her degree and found it fascinating - We're going to help her further with her research. Another chap came up saying he was researching the philanthropy of Robert Owen at New Lanark Mills and found the comparison with that and the cotton industry down here very interesting.

Cheers
Mark

Alan also should give medals to those people who for many hours on Saturday afternoon constantly going round the campsite pegging down many of the tents there. Without those people far fewer would qualify for a medal.
Amongst those helping were some of the artists as well as several festival stewards, about 12 people in all.

Great festival despite the weather, long may it continue.

Any photo's in your collection of the Fylde Folk Festivals? - any years?

New Flickr site set up to gather together some of this electronic ephemera.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/fyldefolkfestival/

Rusty and Stu - bet you've got a few :0)

Doesn't matter when they were taken, of what (as long as Fylde Folk Festival related) Artistes, Dancers, Audiences, scans of posters, articles programmes (We've covers of programmes going back a few years...)

Hopefully we'll end up with a nostalgic photographic archive of Fylde Folk Festival covering the last 34 years and on into the future.

Have a look see what you've got... We'll show you ours if you show us yours.

cheers Stu - I know Roger and his work, the idea behind flickr group is to get an overview from FFF goers over the many years, not just professional photos but snaps of people enjoying the various aspects of festival life (including tent flying...)

So no excuse Stu - get that film developed in your box brownie and let's see 'em :0)

"Young" Calum's changed a bit!

My friends Jon and Kalia are back from England. They had a wonderful time at Fylde, where they were mystified to find that someone (thank you, someone!) had gone to the trouble to track down their photo on Jon's Web site and publish it in the Penny Dreadful. I had to admit to a certain complicity, but I never imagined it going so far! Thanks to someone, they were stopped on the street many times by people who wanted to meet the couple who'd come all the way from California. They loved the festival, and they (and I) send sincere thanks for the hospitality extended to them there. They quite enjoyed all the fuss -- and the mystery!

Cheers and thank you again,
Claire

The Penny Dreadful, in common with most quality newspapers, has a large international research team. No news is safe from the P D.
