just seen the guest list is provisionally out from folkspots... if I knew how to blue clicky, I'd do it...looks like even more on this year, with the usual singaround in the 8 Bells at midday on Sat- think last year we started earlier 'cos there was a quorum.. and the campsite is a bit more accessible, not that I can do that sort of thing..did anyone see miriam erasmus(backhouse) three years ago?

We intend being there but the Eight Bells is usually rammmo. Last year we stayed pretty much in the White Horse. Is the central campsite the one on the website? Is there a nearer one?

She who must be obeyed and I will arrive Friday evening and after eating in the Turkish Restaurant (if we can get in)will track down whatever singing is going on.

I expect that will mean looking in to the Eight Bells at some point in the evening.

Nice to hear that the railway is welcoming us again- will there be a feminist workshop on connecting rods- The Right To Choo Choos?

leaflets are now out, get them from Tourist offices or Alan Castle (or me, I've got 5 wodges to distribute!) Caliko are definitely worth seeing on Saturday- they 've a stunning vocalist and a compelling style- they're a well-kept secret but you can find them Googly... see you there!

Wish me luck for the journey......I have no idea what wheels I will have as my old Rover was written off by a Crinkley (is that right?) last month and the insurance company may want the hire car back before October!!!!

Well, to my shock Bishop Gundulf are not going, so I can't get into central camping unless I buy a full season which I don't want as I only ever go to the sinagrounds, and I really don't fancy being tied to the bus service to and from the commercial campsite up the road (or having not to drink so that I can drive and fight with the parking) so it looks a bit as if I might drive down for one day only (possibly bringing Jeff with me) - or totally no-show.

Since when have you had to buy a season ticket to camp in the field by the station? I couldn't be there last year but in previous years you just turned up and sited your tent/caravan. I'd be very happy to pay for camping but like Richard I only do the pub sessions.

Sorry to hear about the crinkle, Bo- were you OK? Must be time to hire an old moke... it won't be the same without you, and tell the insurance company I said so!
Camping really isn't that pricey, not that I'm fit enough to do it, and the field nearby is available- hope you can make it by hook or crook, Richard.. good to see you at Deal albeit briefly- nice hat!

The price of the camping is not the issue - it's having to catch the bus in order to be able to drink (and having to carry a 12-string, a 6-string, a mandolin and a bodhran, ideally the song-books and if I am going to make the mandolin audible over fiddles and squeezers and banjos for the side, a little amp as well.

And having drunk, remembering where and when to catch the bus back without losing bits....

Glad you like the hat. I think the shades make it. I'm working on "Can I get a witness" and already have a black suit and a white shirt.....

Spare Parts (that's Bryan Creer, Suzanne Higgins and me) are running a concertina part-playing session in the White Horse Saddlery at 2.30 on the Sunday afternoon. We hope to get to whatever singing is going on after that as we've got quite a few meaty chorus songs under our belt now.

I wish we could get over earlier but we've got Nancy Kerr and James Fagan doing all-day instrument workshops at the Lewes Arms that Saturday, and they are the guests at the Lewes Arms Folk Club in the evening, so Bryan and I are on (very pleasant) duty.

Bo and I will be running the session in the Bells on Sat, & expect it will carry on tho I've to run over to the saddlery to chat to Miriam Erasmus- think the Barden is running it at other times, and there are certainly more sinarounds this year, so if the bells is too busy there's a choice. Honing up my harmonicas already!

Like you I followed, found you have to buy a season, told Trevor, and we said "No camping then" I think it's atrocious that you have to pay for a site with no running water, or basic toilets, and then have to pay again for a season ticket you don' want! We won't be down on Friday night, as we have Tom Lewis at the club and are puting him and Lynne up. We shall all be at Tenterden on Saturday as Tom is guesting there too.

Sue, the deluxe campsite out of town might suit you. It is quite nice, and not that cheap, but you will have to make sure that you can fit with the buses or Trevor will have to stay sober enough to drive.

It is however between a quarter and half a mile from the area for touring vans up to the main road where the public buses run (the site keeps copies of their timetables) and I am not sure what the festival's special shuttle is doing htis year: last year it went in a bit too early for my taste, and it was the only way (other than driving) back late at night so if you missed it you were sleeping in the gutter or trying to blag some floor and a spare sleeping bag n the scout hut.

I am not offended by the festival policy: obviously those doing the most get first dibs at the most central site, and they have to pay the farmer for it. I have no objection at all to paying (it's cheap) for a field with no water or bogs. I just don't WANT to buy a season ticket and if I'm playing for a side I won't have that much spare time to go to concerts, which I don't do anyway 'cos I'd rather play.

Thanks for the info Richard. I wasn't so much moaning about the no - bogs situation(got own portaloo),but it's compounded by having to drag a water bottle from town, plus our instruments which may be difficult. It's just that, we enjoy the pub sessions so much, as you do. Though Woodlands see,s nice, the travelling sounds a bit of a bind, so think we'll just come down for the day.

Well, that was nice (mostly).

The Sunday lunchtime sing in the 8 Bells with Peter Collins was a delight. Wall of sound! Kimber's Men in a small room are an earthquake. Tom Lewis live and close up (then and elsewhere) was even better than I remembered, and great to play "hunt the harmony" with.

John Barden introduced me on Saturday to an excellent banjo player and 5-string fiddler called Stacy. Not often I actually WANT a banjo player to join in but him I definitely did.

Andy Smythe was good in the sings too.

And what about that girl from North London who did "Ride on"? Just too good to be true!

Good to have the town centre camping back.   A few sheets of terrain fabric and 35 tons of hoggin would improve that entry to (and exit from) the field, though! Or does anyone know of a factory scrapping a conveyor belt (large) from whom one might blag the belts to lay a tthe entrance? Very few used that site though. Might I suggest for next year that a couple of thunderboxes would be a useful addition, as would a very long garden hose extension run from the station maybe to somewhere near the camping entrance, to provide tapwater?

Perhaps, if "improving" the field entry is a non-starter, someone with a serious 4-wheel drive (something like a Land Rover 110V8) could be persuaded to be on permanent standby (ie mobile phone on, and somewhere in the town) for the weekend with a towrope, to save having to bother the farmer every time someone gets stuck.

Yup, good one- Tim van E especially- so good to see someone in peak form who obviously enjoys what he's up to! The Sunday seessionms seeem to be expanding- tho there were more of them , most were well filled- if they were free! It's always such a friendly festival- thanks to all who made it so.

Maybe you were snoozing! The bloik (good coinage for him) comes every year and sings a song to the tune of "Bread of Heaven". He accompanies himself on a squeezebox, and climbs on to a chair to do it. The song is about how superior he is as a plumber to people with first class degrees from Oxford and Cambridge, and how he earns more (only that sort of person could confuse that with class) and it ends with the line "I've just screwed your gagging wife". I am told he has been asked permanently to leave some clubs because he continued to sing things like that.

It was in on Saturday afternoon.

I must apologise to all who turned up to the sessions I was supposed to have run on Saturday night at the White Lion and Sunday lunchtime too, but I had started suffering from Saturday lunchtime on and was out on my feet by 7:30pm. I ended up sleeping for 12hours, had a nasty fever and felt cr*p all day yesterday and most of today, but am slowly recovering. If it was a surfeit of booze I could understand it, but it wasn't. From what I hear I wasn't missed (you lucky lot) and would like to thank all those who stepped in at the last minute.
As Synbyn says, the festival gets better and better. You never know, the town centre camping might be sorted out for next year too.

Nothing wrong with the town centre camping - just being able to crap and go home again too would be a bonus! No complaints, glad of the facility!

I should apologise to Bo for railroading him into putting Guru on out of turn, but there was a "back and standing up to appear in the circle" problem. And you were good Guru. It was just the moment too for "Bugger Bognor" but Richard Atkins was peeoccupied for the relevant time window (or maybe getting the taxi) and the moment passed.

A quick hello from Spare Parts. Before running the concertina part-playing session on Sunday afternoon we managed to drop into Peter Collins's sea-songs in the Eight Bells and had a very jolly time.

That lurgy is horribly prevalent. If I hadn't been going down with it we'd have stayed for the evening session, but I had to be towed away. Better luck next year, I hope.

A delightful town and a good event all round.
