Not claiming to know very much about Gaelic, but a quick internet search gives the English for "An Spailpín Fanac" as something like "The Migrant Worker"?

In Ireland there are two official languages Irish and English.
The itinerant farm labourer is perhaps closer,
.The village close to me ballydehob[ the mouth of the two rivers is known as BALLYDEHOB,[ not Beal an atha da chab[ the gaelic].
IN ONEILLS IOOI the tune is SPAILPIN FANAC or SPALPEEN FANACH.an garda siochana and an post have recently relaxed their policies of only allowing gaelic speakers to have jobs with them , in otherwords admitting that there are not enough suitable gaelic speakers to police the country.

   the anglicisation of names is quite common, for example Niall,in cork [which apart form a small area is not a gaeltacht area]the people pronounce the name nile ,in other areas like donegal it is pronounced neal, both through uasage are correct, although the first is an anglicisation, otherwise logically niamdh would not be pronounced neeve but nive.

So what language is "Spalpeen Fanach" supposed to be if not Irish?


Regardless of how something is written in a book, from the Internet I can see that the name written on the pub is "An Spailpín Fanac" ( see http://www.irishmusicbars.com/restdisp.asp?restid=451 ). Now I don't know which is right, but I suspect it's best to go with what's written on the building if you want people to turn up ;-)

Your absolutely right, but since there is very little difference in sound [apart from an and the], I am sure asking for either will get you to the right place, Irish people are very friendly and helpful and not normally pedantic. phonetically they are very similar. i really cant envisage asking someone directions and them not telling you because you used an instead of the , they might correct you and then show you the way, however if you asked them for the itinerant farm labourer they wouldnt understand you at all].
spalpeen fanach is an anglicisation of an spailpin fanac[ you speak the English language so you hopefully understand what anglicisation means]IN THE SAME WAY CORK IS AN ANGLICSATION OF CORCAIGH THE LITERAL TRANSLATION OF CORK IS MARSH.
but if you ask for directions to either you would get there because they sound verey similar.

correction for any pedants,.
corcach is irish for swamp not marsh.now if you asked for corc, cork, corcaigh you would get to your destination but if you asked for swamp city, you would not. cork city is not a gaeltact area the majority of people use as their first language, english. so an spailpin fanac or spalpeen fanach will get you there , thats the practicality of the situation.

The cork singers club has many fine singers and I consider it an honour to be asked to play there.The place was packed last time I was there, I sold over a dozen c ds,So people would be advised to get there early.

disclaimer-I am pleased to call Dick a friend and have known him for a few years now.

If you are in the vicinity of any of Dick's gigs, go and see him. I have had the pleasure of hearing Dick perform on a number of occasions and he is not only one of the finest concertina players on the planet, but a fine singer as well. He is also very knowledgeable about many things regarding traditional folk songs and everytime I have a conversation with him I learn something.

Have a great gig, Dick and I hope to see you at some point when I am on your side of the world.

No, we have probably got different ideas of humour. I find william macgonigle very funny but im not offended if you dont.
but i,ve never heard of women asking directions, but men not. Personally I always ask directions, its just the practical thing to do, does this mean i,m going to have a change of sex. Captain Birdseye, becomes Madam Bonaparte, OR JOSEPHINE.
