Next Saturday, 16 September is the date for the monthly shanty/forebitter session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH. Hoping for a good crowd as this will be sort of a rehearsal for      the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival.

I'll be there for sure and I'll remind other Roll & Go folks that it's happening.

Any clue when Barbara's returning from the UK. I've been following the Jeff Warner thread and the return, if ever, is not clear. I do miss her voice, and for the record I also miss Jeff's as well!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

She speaks!!! Hello Charley - currently no clue whatsoever when Barbara will return (haha, tease, tease). OK, the clue is: when I'm close to running out of money! It's been 5 months plus, so I think I might be getting close soon. Next stop after the UK: back to Helsinki for a day. Next stop after that day: Tallinn Estonia. Perhaps around the beginning of November, I may start looking for cheap airfares home.
Meanwhile, Jeff returns on Sunday the 17th, so you should be seeing him soon. No doubt he'll have plenty of tales to tell.
THANKS FOR ASKING, by the way, and have a great shanty session.
And don't forget, all - Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival, SOON!!

Hi BB
If you're going to Helsinki & Tallinn Estonia, you'll not be far from the Aland Islands. The Alands may or may not be of interest to you, it was one of the last home ports to the worlds last & largest commercial sailing fleets. It was run be Gustaf Erickson & he owned & ran one the sailing fleet from the 20's thru the 40's. Anyway just in case you got the notion.
Glad to hear you're still running full steam ahead.
We'll sing a song for you at the festival.

BB, why find a cheap flight home, take a look around the docks, you may find a slow boat back home instead. Really, hitch hiking on the 7 seas is a very popular (if unknown) means of travel. It's how I got home from Hawaii & how many of my friends traveled thru the South Pacific. Sometimes there's a fee & sometimes it's just the want of a cook or an additional crew mwmber. I got picked up in part because a skipper had a few musicians/singers onboard & figured that one more voice & one more hand would make the voyage all the more enjoyable. He even set aside a daily cocktail hour (or 3) just so the moral would stay high when it came to boring times, like 2 weeks caught in the doldrums with not a breath of wind. Try it you may like it. And you won't need any money out there on the blue. Just imagine in every port a bunch of guys all asking "you from around here sailor".

Take good care
Barry

Barry

HI,BB-

We expect a full report in verse when you return.

Looks like Judy and I will be rolling down on Satuday, along with a new Roll & Go apprentice.

Looks like nice weather.

Will we be seeing any of the Gloucester gang?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

'ar' = not quite there, but still existing. It's a combination of 'are' and 'at' and reflects the space/time relationship.

Uh oh.

Hey, I've heard from reliable sources that Al & Barbara Cuenen will be joining us!

And I got a call this morning from Rich from Kennebunk to see if we were on for the afternoon.

I wonder if I should make a flapper-style dress with the electric colored plastic bait squid that Sinsull gave me a few years ago -- lots of fringe (and eyeballs?!?).

Well....I just got in from a morning at work (again) and a few hours on Adventure. It's 2 pm and we should be leaving for the Pressroom about 2:30 or so. Gardi is in Maine afloat in some obscure estuary looking for a way out. See you soon.

Jeri-

You were actually early, with regard to Jeri time!

There was a fine turnout, including our friends Al and Barbara Cuenin from the South Street Seaport shanty singers of NYC. What a blast!

And we're all looking forward to another great Maritime Festival next weekend in Portsmouth (NH).

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

This just gets better and better! It's fun when the choruses are loud enough to drown out at the locals at the bar and the feuding waitresses in the kitchen.
Well done, all!

Lots of arguing, dropped and thrown pots. The high point was when the chef opened the oven door and hit the waitresses tray carrying a burrito.
I asked our waitress if she was going to get combat pay. She just laughed.

I'm sure that after the display of bashing about in the kitchen....there is a new meaning for fish and chips...probably chips of dishes, bowls and plates. We had a tremendous view of the action from our seats...and who said they were the cheap(chip) seats. Well at least the spinach salad was edible....wow....I have to go now....really I have to go. I know Tami did this on purpose....damn her eyes!
Jeri...help...there's a fire down below.
Good sing, lots of fun and a little plastic man stuck in my bag.....hhhmmmm....evil is what evil does...beware the plastic fiddler with rosin on his bow.
You're the best.
See you all Saturday and Sunday.
Doryman and his mate.

I think I may have inadvertently started the row when I asked the waitress if the canned music coming from the kitchen could be turned off because it was annoying. Threw me off one of the songs I was trying to lead. Apparently the cook vehemently hates the music we do there and had a hissy fit about turning of the boom box that was playing so close by (sigh).

She's been told more than once to keep her music down (at least by me & I have no problem with it). One nite a week & only for 4 to 5 hrs at that. She's a bit of a prig & thinks that she's the bully. But when said in a harsh voice she tones down quickly. The sessions been there alot longer than she has or will be. Over in the corner booths it's sometimes downright annoying even when the sounds of silence are being played. I guess I missed the fued too.

The fiddleplayer went home south to Glouchester.

Barry-

Maybe we should try some of our cook forebitters. I've got one I've been wanting to launch and I know you have one with some choice bits.

Or maybe we should be nice and send her some roses instead!

Charley Noble
